The Time [July, 11] has profiled and sign-posted Kenya’s technology prowess- The Silicon Savanna. Commenting on the deliberations of the recent conference for mobile-phone software geeks, Pivot25, the reporter marvels at the high adoption rate of mobile applications Kenya and Africa. “ For the first time, hundreds of millions of people found themselves in a sort of grid, one that allowed them to talk to one another”. But emerging innovations and resilience should not really surprise anyone. Africans are not creating anything new using these gadgets. They only use them to escalate what they have been doing. Our value systems honor the sharing of resources and Mpesa has only helped to amplify the age-long practice. If we like saying a few unkind words to each other face-to-face, we will say more on SMS. If we pickpocket and pilfer offline, we siphon and defraud online. It is the amounts and scales that change, not the values. The good thing about the emerging technologies though is that they are universal, democratic and quite liberating (of course for those with access and know-how). They invent and patent the gadgets in the other world but we are proving to be the king users. They invented the car but never gave us the source code. We could not also access it remotely. The Internet is one civilization we will not be denied. The digital zealots like PS Ndemo have helped spur growth in the tech sector. My worry is if the rural communities are not connected soon, we will only succeed in bridging the digital divide with the world as a country. The elite, who are anyway endowed in other aspects of life, will continue to prosper from innovations. And technology will be found wanting in the scales of bridging the undesirable rich-poor divide.
Andrew, Thanks. We are doing something for our rural folks. I am a bit frustrated that it is moving slowly. If we take is as a collective responsibility, we shall move much faster. If you live in urban areas and you can volunteer time for your rural folks, please let me know. We are working to get either a tablet or a note book to all high school kids but this will require massive training. We need not spend money on training if all of us donated time to educate our rural students. We shall succeed with hardware but need help in building capacities. Let me have your "opinions". Ndemo. Daktari, I love your idea of people volunteering their time to help those in the rural areas especially to build capacity. A number are already doing it in their own way. I wonder if there could be a structured way to do it. Maybe a centralized place where people can drop their names (and expertise) if need be, areas where they would like to volunteer etc. And if possible they can be matched with relevant people in these areas; the link person in those areas could be the District Information Officers (I hope that is what they are called). This is just me running away with ideas....but only if possible. This is great! We are running trainings every day in Western through youth volunteers. It is a challenge to meet the excess demand. This lead us to develop an e-learning platform so we can extend our reach. Would any of the volunteers be willing to record the sessions or create video content? We would make it available countrywide for free. As of now we have a list of 10 centers in Kenya and 22 in Ghana who are waiting for access to the content. Our first round of courses will be launched in August. In September after we feel we have enough content and have a solid platform, we will actively be seeking to make it available to as many training centers and youth (through the Internet) as possible. Any takers? Best, Crystal On Tue, Jul 5, 2011 at 12:03 PM, Barrack Otieno <otieno.barrack@gmail.com>wrote:

Ken, for some reason you did not copy this to the list. Nyaki (Catherine...not Edith) ----- Forwarded Message ---- From: Chelimo Ken <ken@kenyatelecentres.org> To: Catherine Adeya <elizaslider@yahoo.com> Sent: Tue, July 5, 2011 12:07:35 PM Subject: Re: [kictanet] Silicon Savanna I like Catherine Adeya's idea of trying to contact those in the grassroots to coordinate some of us who want to help the rural folk. In fact there is an organization called Kenya Network of Telecentres (www.kenyatelecentres.org) which has several member information resource centres in rural and slum areas which can be used to build the capacities of those living around the centres and beyond. Over to you folks. Ken Chelimo On Tue, Jul 5, 2011 at 11:59 AM, Catherine Adeya <elizaslider@yahoo.com> wrote: Daktari,
I love your idea of people volunteering their time to help those in the rural areas especially to build capacity.
Best Regards,
Nyaki

Andrew, Thanks. We are doing something for our rural folks. I am a bit frustrated that it is moving slowly. If we take is as a collective responsibility, we shall move much faster.
If you live in urban areas and you can volunteer time for your rural folks, please let me know. We are working to get either a tablet or a note book to all high school kids but this will require massive training. We need not spend money on training if all of us donated time to educate our rural students. We shall succeed with hardware but need help in building capacities. Let me have your "opinions".
