Well written article (I usually don't say that). I haven't been to Nigeria yet but here are the main advantages Kenya has: 1. Security - apparently it's even worse in Lagos than Nairobi 2. Officiousness - Visas are really hard to get 3. Electricity - Major money goes into diesel since the electricity grid is so bad However, the big takeaway is that in Nairobi, it's not like evaluations on any of those 3 dimensions are high - it's just that the competition is so weak. Nairobi might be the center of African technology in 2020 or it might not - but it's Nairobi's to lose. -Adam -- Kili - Cloud for Africa: kili.io Musings: twitter.com/varud <https://twitter.com/varud> More Musings: varud.com About Adam: www.linkedin.com/in/adamcnelson On Tue, Mar 11, 2014 at 3:42 PM, Gideon <gideonrop@gmail.com> wrote:

What's missing in that story which I think is important is the story of Demo Africa being hosted in Nigeria this year. Critical in that is the open arms that the demo team were received with by the highest levels of the Nigerian government in the ICT Sector. http://www.cio.co.ke/news/top-stories/demo-africa-2014-set-for-nigeria-in-se.... We have always been masters of the hype which has its value in the scheme of things. Now we are loosing the hype to Nigeria and Rwanda. Maybe it's not such a bad thing so that we can move beyond the hype and start doing. Hype shouldn't matter. Germany is huge in manufacturing, even if a lot of the focus is on China. Hype only matters if Kenya exists purely to be validated by third parties. If we have good product, hype regardless, our sector will thrive. There's an old adage, "good marketing makes a bad product fall faster".
