Hi Victor, Thank you for sharing this update. The reported data breach at BRS and the takeover of KBC’s X account raise serious concerns, not just about immediate security risks but also about the broader implications for data integrity, public trust, and regulatory response. A few critical questions arise from these incidents: What immediate assurances can be provided to businesses and individuals whose data may be exposed? What vulnerabilities led to these breaches, and are similar risk windows open in other government systems? What steps are being taken to ensure transparency and timely communication with affected entities? How do these incidents shape the conversation around strengthening cybersecurity frameworks across both public and private sectors? Given the growing frequency and sophistication of cyber threats, a clear action plan is essential to prevent recurrence, reinforce public confidence, and ensure accountability. I look forward to further updates on the ongoing investigations and any measures being considered to close security gaps. If they can hack such entities it means there is great need for the stakeholders in the CSO sector to be sensitized on how to strengthen their data systems. If the same hackers decide to manipulate data and use those social media, how will we protect the citizens from fake news and misinformation? This is very crucial as we continue engaging on data protection. With regards, On Sun, Feb 2, 2025 at 8:42 PM Victor Kapiyo via KICTANet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Now that the data is out there, I have a question. Why isn’t this data out there for free hosted by our government? We’re charged 500 bob for each search yet here is a company able to do so for free.

That's a good question Sidney. Apart from addressing vulnerabilities, a freemium structure might eliminate the incentive to hack and steal data. Most searches citizens make for proprietor/CR12 are imposed on them to confirm only the basic ownership info. Proposal -------------- ° [Free Tier] to offer business name and names of shareholders only; which is a common confirmation search. ° [Premium Tier] for a more granular insights of contact info, ID & nationality details, physical address, share allocation, beneficial owner etc that a minority have interest in. Overall, a government agency should simply bill for API queries of confidential data instead of requiring applicants to download/scan then upload an ID, PIN or CR12 form. Someone very very very powerful was not happy with the data dump from the Business Registration Service (BRS) where you could search all the companies registered in Kenya. All records on Kenyan companies on b2bhint have been deleted. Read more here https://www.businessdailyafrica.com/bd/corporate/technology/moldovan-firm-de... The Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy in Kenya confirmed that a data breach at the Business Registration Service (BRS) has been fully resolved, with all unauthorized information removed and systems secured. Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo assured the public that enhanced preventive measures have been implemented to mitigate future breaches and that stringent cybersecurity safeguards have been reinforced across government digital infrastructure. https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2025-02-06-kabogo-weve-addressed-data-breach...
