KICTANet's new website: Call for comments

Dear listers, Greetings, KICTANet has just finished working on the first phase of the new website and would now like to invite you to give comments/suggestions. Especially on how it can serve as an ICT policy engagement platform and as an Information resource for stakeholders. Here's the link: https://www.kictanet.or.ke/. <https://www.kictanet.or.ke/> You can send your comments either on/offlist, or on the website itself. KICTANet owes a lot to the brilliant team that worked on this website (Amos Ochieng from pixels Kenya, Barrack Otieno, Mike Musya and Washington Odhiambo) Special thanks to Washington who developed and maintained the old website from the early days of the network. As always, we thank you for your continued feedback and we hope you will enjoy the new look and feel. -- Best regards. Liz. PGP ID: 0x1F3488BF

Hi George, There are s number of things that haven't been finalized on the website, like those links. They will be done. Your feedback is welcome, so that we note down what listers have noticed for rectification, improvement. On your question about WordPress, I am not sure you really need a response, but obviously was the developer's choice of CMS. George On the question of why Wordpress? First it’s an open source Content Management System (CMS), its free to install, deploy, and upgrade. Then it has thousands of plugins and templates that power a flexible and simple interface, which reduces development costs and deployment time. The site's design is aesthetically appealing, the template is flexible and therefore optimized for mobile and I love the Twitter plugin. Great work team. Kindly consider the following: 1. Include features to improve the site's accessibility like a screen reader for the visually impaired. 2. Include a font re-sizer plugin for zooming in and out the text. 3. Add the "alt" tags to the images, so that in slow internet connection the alternative text can be loaded first in place of the image and also for the screen readers. 4. Website Analytics ~ so we can know how many people are visiting the site. 5. When I click on an image, I want it to expand and overlay the website. There is a plugin that can do that. 6. Can the "Join KICTANET" sub-menu under "ABOUT" be brought one level up on the top menu? Otherwise it's a brilliant job, keep it up team. Site is a big step forward. Kudos. Just curious though, how does Kictanet as a brand plan to create brand awareness - so that someone landing on the Kictanet site is a bit more oriented to what they are specifically looking at. It may be simple to us who are part of the community, but then what about how we onboard someone new? Or what if the World Bank does a search and lands on the site (lets assume they have no idea what it is). Is it that we are looking at organic growth through community engagement to do that or do we want an online presence that solidified a soft landing (first impressions). When looking at the bigger picture I think this may go hand in hand with an SEO strategy and aided by a Social Media mechanism but maybe thats not the entire point..

On the question of why Wordpress?
First it’s an open source Content Management System (CMS), its free to install, deploy, and upgrade. Then it has thousands of plugins and templates that power a flexible and simple interface, which reduces development costs and deployment time. The dev team was also informed by the fact that millions of websites use Wordpress. Some of he most notable brands that use Wordpress include Microsoft and Bloomberg. See link below:-

I like some of the responses to my questions. Still, I have to wonder, was security even considered before going for WP, which is one of the most targeted by hackers. When considering time and cost, I might consider WP, but then, do you consider extra plugins that you might have to purchase, how about updating issues. Also, I believe the client has the right to be specific with what they want. I just found it ironic that KICTANet, the platform with people and institutions in Technology in the country uses wordPress. As to the websites that use Wordpress, not one of these sites uses WP out of the box – there is considerable custom development to make these sites work the way they do, development costing a lot of money. Those sites are not ‘wordpressbeginner’ grade. On Sun, Oct 15, 2017 at 9:19 PM, Odhiambo Washington via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Hi George, To answer you in summary: No system is 100% breach-proof. I am sure there are websites using WP that are secured enough, but still, someone hell-bent on cracking (call it hacking if you may) will still find a way, because security has different layers.
From where I sit, all one has to do is to follow security best practices for whatever system they decide to use (base, plugins, etc) they decide to use. Everything else beside that is just political. Again, WP, Drupal, whatever (without adherence to security best practices) is just as vulnerable.
Good night. On 15 October 2017 at 23:29, george sidney ralak <georgeralak@gmail.com> wrote:

George , to add to what Washington and other colleagues have said, a lot was taken into consideration when choosing the content management system that is currently in use. The development team is also aware of the pros and cons of the system as you are raising but settled on the current Content Management System. We invite you to provide specific input on areas that can be improved just as Kelvin Kariuki has done be it from a security perspective, user interface or user experience. @ Ahmed, if you go through the website you will notice that significant effort is being made on the branding front. I invite you and other listers to peruse the policy briefs and submissions on the website to confirm this. As to the websites that use Wordpress, not one of these sites uses WP out of the box – there is considerable custom development to make these sites work the way they do, development costing a lot of money. Those sites are not ‘wordpressbeginner’ grade.

I agree with George's sentiment on wordpress security - I have had the (un)pleasant experience of helping/cleaning several wordpress setups which had been hacked. That said I am sure the pro's and con's was considered when the choice of CMS was made. In my experience many attacks on wordpress is targeted on the /wp-admin/ folder, and making that inaccessible to all but explicitly white-labeled IP's seems to remove a lot of grief. I am personally running only one wordpress installation which has no (customer) critical data and hosted on a separate hosting setup. On that setup the admin can on be access from one specific IP - but you can access a custom (non wordpress based) system to change the current allowed IP to whichever IP you are currently on. It takes 30seconds extra to login/access the admin but in my opinion it reduces a lot of problems. .. Mike On 10/15/2017 11:29 PM, george sidney ralak via kictanet wrote:

For those who have asked here is the more technical details of how I set this up (It's really just a quick hack). 1. inside the wp-admin folder I have a .htaccess file which forbids access from almost every IP - something similar to: Order deny, allow Deny from all Allow from 41.212.36.170 2. Within the main web-root I have a file (see attached php code) in this example it's called "kictWP.php". When I need access to the admin I then simply goto http://www.mydomain.com/kictWP.php - enters my "secret" password - this then updates the .htaccess file so wp-admin can be accessed from my curent IP.

KICTANet owes a lot to the brilliant team that worked on this website (Amos Ochieng from pixels Kenya, Barrack Otieno, Mike Musya and Washington Odhiambo) Special thanks to Washington who developed and maintained the old website from the early days of the network.

From apache documentation at: https://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.4/howto/access.html
" The Allow, Deny, and Order directives, provided by mod_access_compat, are deprecated and will go away in a future version. You should avoid using them, and avoid outdated tutorials recommending their use." So, a more future-proof answer would be: <RequireAll> Require ip xx.xx.xx.xx yy.yy.yy.yy </RequireAll> Cheers, Tony On 19/10/2017, Michael Pedersen via kictanet <kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

On the question of why Wordpress?
First it’s an open source Content Management System (CMS), its free to install, deploy, and upgrade. Then it has thousands of plugins and templates that power a flexible and simple interface, which reduces development costs and deployment time. The dev team was also informed by the fact that millions of websites use Wordpress. Some of he most notable brands that use Wordpress include Microsoft and Bloomberg. See link below:-

Greetings,
KICTANet has just finished working on the first phase of the new website and would now like to invite you to give comments/suggestions.

For those who have asked here is the more technical details of how I set this up (It's really just a quick hack).
1. inside the wp-admin folder I have a .htaccess file which forbids access from almost every IP - something similar to:
Order deny, allow Deny from all Allow from 41.212.36.170
Thats it really..

I like the website. I am looking at migrating some of my sites to WordPress myself (the wp-admin folder access hack sounds very useful). Looking at security surrounding the website - I see you are using "Let's Encrypt" - that's very cool. As I'm into DNS/DNSSEC & IPv6... You should consider using DNSSEC. Would that not be a good example to the Kenyan and the general African community? I'm aware that "or.ke" is currently not (no longer) signed - but a little pressure on Abdalla at kenic... ? ;-) You could then add DANE - so the Website Certificate can be verified via the DNS, and even add some CAA records as well to the DNS... @ IN CAA 0 issue letsencrypt.org ; This site only does Let's Encrypt Certificates @ IN CAA 0 iodef mailto:dns-admin@kictanet.or.ke <https://www.kictanet.or.ke/> ; Whom to notify if anything else chosen Lastly - when is IPv6 coming? I see no AAAA records. Thought Cloudflare supported IPv6 pretty much everywhere? On 12/10/2017 22:55, Liz Orembo via kictanet wrote:
