Fwd: How this happened (How Obama used Technology to stay ahead during the campaign)
Listers Obama continued to stay ahead and the closeness of this election (despite the electorate college votes big margin the battle ground states were won with the slightest of margins) because of his team's sleek use of technology - especially the use of Big Data. The ability to crunch the numbers and glean nuggets of pure gold in terms of voter trends and getting out the voters to vote for him really is the biggest lesson here. In my opinion of course. Are there lessons here for our politicians? How can we engage (through proper use of technology) with all Kenyans to ensure we vote in the right leaders? Or am I being an idealist and romantic and all this is just wishful thinking? I'm about to go speak to the crowd here in Chicago, but I wanted to thank you first.
I want you to know that this wasn't fate, and it wasn't an accident. You made this happen.
You organized yourselves block by block. You took ownership of this campaign five and ten dollars at a time. And when it wasn't easy, you pressed forward.
I will spend the rest of my presidency honoring your support, and doing what I can to finish what we started.
But I want you to take real pride, as I do, in how we got the chance in the first place.
Today is the clearest proof yet that, against the odds, ordinary Americans can overcome powerful interests.
There's a lot more work to do.
But for right now: Thank you.

With this one, Ali, you're living in Utopia. America is not Kenya :-) I wish I could remind you that Kenyan politicians rely on tribal balkanization to get their votes. That's why you see politicianA talking to politicianB on how they can work together to win the election. It's about numbers from their tribes, whom they hope to put in a box first.. Tunawesmake!!! True Wash. The tribal card will continue to be played. Obama and Romney did the same in the US, difference was replacing tribe with 'ethnic'... My point though is this - Is there an opportunity here to harness technology for better governance and hence better leadership? (Eventually...) To be fair, while this is egregious, you have to see it in the post 9-11 context AND also consider that what George W Bush and other Republicans have given us (Patriot Act, etc) has been far worse! -- Cheers, McTim "A name indicates what we seek. Dear Listeners, Open Data should be linked to the National System of Innovation. Wearing another hat of being a teacher, asked students what there sources of information is and whether they have heard of open data, all were in negative which is a cause for worry. I agree with Paul that there is invaluable information on the Open data which people are not aware of or are aware of but do not understand how to derive the benefits. What we currently have for those who are knowledgeable, should be able to derive benefits. I would not be surprised that there are offshore organisations that use Open data making for example very targeted marketing in the country. For any innovation to be pervasive we need a closely knit relationship among entrepreneurs, government research institutions and universities. Paul just wondering whether you have made efforts to educate the universities on the availability of Open data as a resource and how best to benefit from it. + 1 Ali, Obama managed to precisely target each demographics with the right message at the right time using the right tools In our case, however, our leaders and political parties would prefer not to do that – why? My guess would be that it will expose the fact they do not stand for much other than their tribal affiliations. Media (just like you experience with CNN, NBC, FOX etc) embracing such technologies could be a starting point, although I doubt that it will happen any time soon. The scenario is true even in private sector. I remember 5 years ago, I tried to introduce the use of business intelligence tools such as data mining, six sigma, business process modeling, etc to companies and parastatals in Kenya and the response I got – “This is Kenya young man, we are making profits and therefore we do not need to do any of that”. There are enormous amounts of raw data within these organizations’ “data banks”, that if modern analytical techniques and tools were to be applied properly, could see the realization of efficiencies ranging from public sector service delivery to improving private sector organizational performance. Listers Ali makes an important point. The lessons are about the use of big data, and analytics and this can be transposed into many other scenarios. This scenarios are not utopia. There are many here who imagine and execute ideas of this nature, albeit on a smaller scale and in different contexts. Even CNN's John Kings analysis (on the digital touch screen) that broke downs different aspects provided maps that illustrated predictions that Ohio and Florida was going to swing Obama purely on the basis of demographics analysis was quite rich to watch. A case study of great data journalism. We have alot of very rich census data on opendata.go.ke that is begging for smart analysis from anyone who loves the use of data to illustrate important social issues such as poverty, health financial expenditure in Kenya. Obama continued to stay ahead and the closeness of this election (despite the electorate college votes big margin the battle ground states were won with the slightest of margins) because of his team's sleek use of technology - especially the use of Big Data.

Friend --
I'm about to go speak to the crowd here in Chicago, but I wanted to thank you first.
Barack
