Digital TV Launches
Digital TV means interactive TV, which means we can use the TV set for other applications such as email, e-Gov information services etc. Is this right? If it it, we are witnessing a digital revolution. Anyone with knowledge on this to share? http://www.cio.co.ke/index.php/view-all-main-stories/443-pomp-and-colour-as- digital-broadcasting-launches-in-kenya-.html Harry African eDevelopment Resource Centre eDevelopment House : : 604 Limuru Road Old Muthaiga : : P O Box 49475 00100 Nairobi : : Kenya T +254 20 3741646/7 : : C +254 725 650044 Training : : Research: :Consultancy: : Publishing
Thanks Harry for starting this debate. I am also very curious to know what the Digital TV has to offer. I am sure we have some experts among us? Esther

Harry: Thanks for starting the debate. Personally, I can't wait for providers to offer some kind of interactive service -- mixed with the Internet, to make it interactive TV. Information on demand, plus two-way services over a phone line, such as email, online shopping and banking. True, I believe we are witnessing a digital revolution. John K. Just a thought We have upto 2015 to replace the old TV sets with the new ones or buy the gadget that would convert from analog to digital. However there is a chance that a number of people will discard most of the old sets for new ones. Lets not ignore the fact of a very aggressive marketing that will follow. There is currently scanty information on the national install base of TVs, some statistics indicate between 700,000 to 1 million this is a huge number. Are there plans in place to manage this e-waste? Regards, Sam
Mr. Aguyo, First we have until 2012 when the cut off will be done. For ICT techies one does not need the converter box. A simple modem will do. We shall denonstrate this to help Kenyans move faster into Digital. Indeed in the converged environment, we have moved from Broadcast into IT. Once operators discover this and we want them to, they will help reduce e-waste in the country. Digital ready TVs are actually computer monitors. They will serve the dual purpose of a desk top and TV. As for the TVs we have, we shall encourage Kenyans to use certified e-waste dealers in the country such as Computer for skills. With the innovative capability in this country, I am confident that someone will come up with a solution in terms of converting what we have into meaningful use. In my view, every problem is an opportunity. We should indeed be seeing opportunities rather than problems. Ndemo.

Dear All, I am not sure if some of you saw the Adverts that were in the Kenya Dailies in September for a couple of days answering a number of questions that I see raised here. Understandably , it is possible that some may not have seen them. Here are the FAQs that were published in the print dailies in September to build up to the launch yesterday. Best Wishes as you go digital :-) Nyaki ________________________________ From: Esther <emuchiri@andestbites.com> To: elizaslider@yahoo.com Cc: KICTAnet ICT Policy Discussions <kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> Sent: Wed, December 9, 2009 10:14:12 PM Subject: Re: [kictanet] Digital TV Launches Thanks Harry for starting this debate. Harry, You are very correct. In my earlier post I stated that we have practically moved into a converged environment. Government will introduce a number of services on the platform but as we get to understand it, the private sector will drive it faster. In January we shall have a session with the ICT sector to explain the opportunities. Ndemo.
