Sector Statistics Report Q2 2019-2020
Listers For those who may have missed, the Communications Authority recently released the Quarter 2 Sector Statistics Report. Notably, CA revised its data collection template in a bid to meet data requirements by various stakeholders. The report notes that CA shared a manual on definitions and methodologies of collecting and reporting Telecommunication indicators with service providers and the public for purposes of common understanding of ICT indicators. The manual was developed in consultation with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and is available on here: https://ca.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/ICT-Indicators-Manual-2019-.pdf The Quarter 2 Sector Statistics Report provides an overview of the performance and trends of the ICT sector for the period 1st October to 31st December 2019. It further notes an increase in cyber threats, and a decrease in .ke domain names from the previous quarter to stand at 91,940. However, it was recently reported on this list that the domain names have now hit the 100, 000 mark. Meaning that the situation has improved in the last three months. And amazing-- people are still sending out letters which rose to 10.5 million letters compared to 9.6 million letters sent between July and September 2019. This was attributed to the sending of success cards to candidates undertaking national exams, and I suspect christmas cards. As at 31st December 2019, the number of active mobile subscriptions (SIM5 Cards) in the country stood at 54.5 million translating to mobile (SIM) penetration6 of 114.8 percent. Mobile (SIM) penetration in the country remains high partly due to multiple SIM ownership by consumers. This indicator is different from that on mobile phone use penetration that is determined through national surveys. ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, On Tue, 14 Apr 2020 at 00:06, Samuel Kamau via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

I am actually happy that CA has quantified that indicator, that it does not indicate mobile phone penetration per population, and the only way they do that is through household surveys. The last ICT survey available on their website is for 2010 https://ca.go.ke/downloads/publications/national-ict-survey/ although there is also the ICT access gap sturdy of 2016. CA should make the ICT access survey an annual event. CA should also ask operators to indicate the fraudulent numbers owned by Kamiti prison boys that they have clamped down. I have started keeping a tab of all the fraud numbers that contact me with all sort of schemes here https://twitter.com/LORDMWESH/status/1239471178227556352 After I while I check if the numbers have been de-activated. NON . CA should also give statistics on number of reported stolen phones, and recovered phones, similar to the issue @Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> was raising. ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya https://www.linkedin.com/in/mwendwa-kivuva On Tue, 14 Apr 2020 at 13:51, Ali Hussein <ali@hussein.me.ke> wrote:

For those who may have missed, the Communications Authority recently released the Quarter 2 Sector Statistics Report.
Notably, CA revised its data collection template in a bid to meet data requirements by various stakeholders.
The report notes that CA shared a manual on definitions and methodologies of collecting and reporting Telecommunication indicators with service providers and the public for purposes of common understanding of ICT indicators. The manual was developed in consultation with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and is available on here: https://ca.go.ke/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/ICT-Indicators-Manual-2019-.pdf
The Quarter 2 Sector Statistics Report provides an overview of the performance and trends of the ICT sector for the period 1st October to 31st December 2019.

I am actually happy that CA has quantified that indicator, that it does not indicate mobile phone penetration per population, and the only way they do that is through household surveys.
CA should also give statistics on number of reported stolen phones, and recovered phones, similar to the issue @Odhiambo Washington <odhiambo@gmail.com> was raising.

Mwendwa, That formula is problematic. For you to arrive at a more than perfect percentage, what is your base? What does that statistic tell us? Yes, more than one person owns more than one SIM card- but what population of the country owns more than one SIM card? Is it a wealth and status measure? Is it a measure as to how many SIM cards have been sold and registered. Sigh. Problematic mathematics. When they used similar terms to put a number on internet penetration levels in 2018- the folly was clear- do you mean there is a higher internet penetration level than the number of people? Are we counting IoT devices as people? Problematic! On Tue, 14 Apr 2020 at 19:25, Ali Hussein via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:
