Prejudged you is not at all correct You were on local media news days ago on this issue. I immediately asked you to react to my letter which you chose not to citing away on travel, and busy with business. As of today, when I asked you when specifically you would respond, you reverted with a two-word email "Next week". You see, our advocacy for quality, affordable, fairly-priced communication is not dependent on any service providers schedules or their ability to respond, via email, to our requests for information. What MJ is displaying is arrogance which is being permitted by Dr Ndemo. The arrogance where a poor investor can come to our country, borrow money from our banks and then after getting rich close shop the same day like GTV without anyone questioning. The arrogance where Michael Joseph can be brought here by the British masters and then forced upon us and after being rich buy guns and start sponsoring Kenyans like its happening in Isiolo where Lewa owners where MJ is a big owner of land is sponsoring violence and killing and maiming Kenyans and then we say that we have tribalism in Kenya. Tribalism is being fuelled by racist and arrogant people like Michael Joseph and if its hard to see how Michael Joseph who in January was just waxing lyrical how much we will save on Fibre Optics is now arrogant to teh core then we need to review our stakes. We dont need such cheap arrogance and Michael Joseph must be told so. How can you unilaterally decide without involving shareholders that tehy must get money through Mpesa? How can you just see Kenyans as people who eat and do nothing for the company while they gave yuo teh capital to expand? Lets be realistic here. this is arrogance and impunity to teh core and we must face it headon. Alex, ukitaka backup you got me. We will continue highlighting this until it sinks in the head of everybody taht we have Hyenas masquerading as mother Teresa Internet cost must go down and we support those fighting for this in facebook, and through other social media

Onyango Hatari, I have googled you on the internet and I have no clue what you do. Please table on this list your achievements in the ICT sector to warrant such spew on someone who has really helped change the IT sector in Kenya. On this one, am totally disgusted to be associated with this list. And you should apologise for making me read this email. I strive to read all my emails but today I feel wasted. Do you remember where we were in 1998 when we used to queue at Extelcoms House to pay our bills and what Safaricom can do for you today from voice, data and even money transfer??? In just 10 years!!! And you have the guts to show your naked arse on this list to shame the man who pioneered all this??? Get a life man.....Its not advisable to drink all night and then write emails in the morning...for I cannot think what else could have made you chronicle such shit to a large list like this one.... I have always been one of those fence sitters, enjoying all the debate in KICTANET, but Onyango Hatari's contribution has 'rattled' me. Oh my God! I dont believe on this list we should be subjected to this kind of language. I felt insulted reading his contribution. Even if one has a burning issue, please use civil language!!! Wow!

You were on local media news days ago on this issue.
And in any case, we have the right to state our position regardless and I am very sure that you can respond well via various media.

Good people, Inasmuch as we want to air our issues, there is a need to work out things right in addressing some things. I, for instance, do not subscribe to any of Safaricom's services, yet I find it quiet worrisome when some of us decide *'I'll spit what I want without caring about the lot around!' *attitude**. There are so many things I can point out about our Telcos, both negative and positive, but how I chose to approach an issue is what matters. We are now heading to attacking personalities in the name of fighting for our rights, yet as I had indicated in the previous email on this thread, lack of a strong consumer rights body, will only make these companies smile all the way to the bank as we try outdoing each other. When you go to fight an elephant, you don't just carry an arrow and a bow, expecting to make a kill, what matters again, is not what you are carrying, but how well you'll be able to overpower it. I need someone to wake me up, if at all I'm asleep, and tell me, when did we air our grievances to the government as a body and were frustrated. Going as lone rangers, will end up as a laughing stock! Let us tone the choice of language we are using here, for God's sake! My little ranting! 2009/9/10 Bill Kagai <billkagai@gmail.com>

I would encourage Michael Joseph to report to the nearest police station for investigations to commence with a view of suing for libel because this is clear defamation. The Chairman of the ICT Consumers Association should be one of the respondents 'to assist police with investigations' since he seems to be the only one who knows the true identity of one Onyango Hatari. Or is there anyone in this list who has actually interacted with Onyango Hatari???

Guys, I am equally shocked at the amount of venom we can emit online in such a short time. As the moderator of the list, I have had to suspend Onyango Hatari's posts (which are all queued up for delivery but after I screen them). So Onyango Hatari plse just hold your horses. I must also confess that we are yet to constitute a fool-proof mechanism that could match online identities to physical real-life identities - that way people would be more accountable to what they say (the recent Kenyan judicial ruling on someone who send a defamatory SMS (text message) being a notable legal precedent for all us) Having said that, lets all be diplomatic, where a Diplomat has been once defined as someone who can tell you to go to hell and you actually look forward to taking the trip ;-) In other words, there are ways in which we can disagree without getting (digitally) physical. Otherwise all these online forums would lose their value that has been widely acclaimed as a role model for multi-stakeholder, bottom-up, consultative processes. regards, walu. nb: not sure why my regular jwalu@yahoo.com not working.

Walu, I am equally concerned and have come in at the tail-end when I heard what was going on in Kicatnet (actually offline in various ICT fora). I have had a chance to catch up on emails and I am shocked and equally disgusted. I had thought I should not reply but hey....I know it is a challenge for you as the moderator but my advice to all is to stick to ICT issues, if you cannot you really should be struck from this list. We have had many healthy and useful debates, let us not degrade the great opportunity we have to interact on this online forum. There are many countries where this would not be allowed, however productive and innocent it was. Let us not abuse our opportunities. KICTANET has been used as a model in many parts of Africa, and there is still room for it......personality issues MUST NOT BE ALLOWED! Please respect this space....I do understand Consumers must have a voice but do put your issues in appropriate language and stick to the issues.....if it high cost of the Internet....just say so and let others give suggestions etc. Best, Nyaki ________________________________ From: "jwalubengo@mmu.ac.ke" <jwalubengo@mmu.ac.ke> To: elizaslider@yahoo.com Cc: KICTAnet ICT Policy Discussions <kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 12:58:21 PM Subject: Re: [kictanet] Time Out! I fully concur with Catherine. If there is a problem to be addressed, let us raise it up in a manner that is acceptable and diplomatic. There is no need to go to the level of character assassination because we don't agree on some issues. When some comments were raised during the day, I froze, not knowing whether to continue as a lister on this forum or pull out. It is only after realizing pulling out will give the character 'assasinators' have a field day. My opinion is to make the group focus on the relevance of ICT Policy issues instead of anything some people feel it is good. Interestingly, these allegations come only a day after the EAI-GF and the originators of the information, did not even take part in the forum! Bill, your remark as it stands right here borders on something already illegal.... Please take note.

You were on local media news days ago on this issue. I immediately asked you to react to my letter which you chose not to citing away on travel, and busy with business. As of today, when I asked you when specifically you would respond, you reverted with a two-word email "Next week".

Fully agree with Bill about the hate speech and .... but also agree with Alex Gakuru on this one - that we consumers are unhappy with high prices! First it was our (Kenyan) corruption (nepotism and tribalism) that run down Telkom Kenya. In 2003 an employee with a multinational.org which supplied some technology to Telkom Kenya told me how surprised some bank was at the cash Telkom Kenya started banking in early 2003. It may not have been enough to run the organization but was much more than was being banked prior to this. We have had to bring in France Telecom (Orange) to clean up our mess because our tribal ways / politics did not allow us to deal with (purge) the impunity at Telkom Kenya ... which included a bloated workforce comprised of many unqualified villagers .. Vodafone had to bribe (Mobitelea) to set up Safaricom Ltd. Maybe that is why those who could afford it had to pay 100K (almost USD 2,0000.00 then) to get a mobile line. Some frequencies we need for more affordable connectivity are still held up by whoever or whatever - CCK needs to clarify and is probably rectifying. What the likes of Vodafone and Orange do is to look at our previous (mis)management to feel content with themselves. It is sort of like how our Founding Fathers inherited a colonial system that mistreated (undermined) Africans and committed other crimes they viewed as less evil than colonialism. An elderly Kikuyu driver once told me (while showing me some parts of Nairobi that colonials kept out of bounds for Africans told me) it is better to be poor and free than colonized. Those of us who want to be re-colonized can always and usually do migrate to the West where they continue to bad mouth anything and everything African. As for us Kenyan Private Sector Patriots, we are going to demand the kind of (efficient and affordable) services that Expats also offer to or demand from their fellow country or kinsmen and local employees. Nothing more nothing less. They can be worth more to Africa than African emigrants and looters who are building up foreign nations (economies) for their own personal gain. Bill Kagai wrote:

Onyango Hatari, It is outbursts like these that discourage participation in these mailing lists. I believe it would be more constructive for us to wait for the cables to be fully operational - by this I mean real and active point to point connections are made from the fibre to our offices... in other words- LIVE connectivity. In the case of TEAMS - and in some cases, Seacom - this has not happened yet. Let's give the players time to get these connections in place. Rome was not built in day. Once they do, and if prices have not come down as significantly as promised, then yes, one or two of us will indeed have a case to answer. But let's not forget that there are some players are appear very keen to get prices down to the levels promised. We should be active consumers and let market forces reign. If some players do not decrease their prices, we, as consumers, should logically move to those who have lowered prices to "acceptable" rates. This is the scenario consumer activists should be fighting to achieve. I believe this debate has digressed to become a personality/ ego match that does not add any real value to any of these forums. Having said all that - I issue the standard disclaimer that these are my personal views and not those of the media house I work for. -----Original Message----- From: kictanet-bounces+mkinyanjui=nation.co.ke@lists.kictanet.or.ke [mailto:kictanet-bounces+mkinyanjui=nation.co.ke@lists.kictanet.or.ke] On Behalf Of Onyango Hatari Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 11:13 AM To: Marie-Anne Kinyanjui Cc: Skunkworks forum; ke-users; kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke Subject: Re: [kictanet] Kenya: Consumers furious over high internet prices Conrad Did I talk of nationality anywhere. woooooo drama! Bwana Hatari let me start by saying pole sana! you definately are very unhappy Internet consumer! however in the same breath a seperation of issues is important. MJ is not Safaricom and Safaricom is not MJ. In my humble opinion I would like to imagine that both (MJ and Safaricom) are independent enties in as viwed by the goverment and by the law. So the more approriate entity to lash out to would be Safaricom and Not MJ. On another point just this week the EA-IGF was on for three days at the Jacaranda Hotel, the details of this forum were made public on this forum and this forum was possibly one of the best places to voice this concerns about the ICT related issues form pricing to QoS (quality of Service) Dr. Ndemo among other, Members of parliament both Kenyan and from the East African region were present. If Bwana Hatari's sentiments were raised in this forum on Day one I assure someone would have given them a good ear. Another important thing that came out was that we need a strong consumer Advocacy group that has a "face" and we can deal with this issues head on! I have not heard any one Bash AccessKenya For example with their "double your bandwidth for the same price" campaign... This basically shows they still want to charge the same despite enjoying low BULK bandwidth cost. KDN or UUNet (I stand to be corrected) annoucned a 90% reduction on bandwidth from $5000 for 1Mb to little over $500 for the same. The other thing we may want to define is what is cheap or affordable Internet access? with the way things are now I doubt any telco or ISP will lower their rates remember they to are in this to make money and also consider that the global community is in recession. Some for example safaricom are a 20% stakeholder in the Teams cable which was a capital intensive venture! They guys who ought to be bashed really in my view are the media houses and news content developers if they do not give news that shows that there is a big Internet market in the country who will want to lower their prices in light of all the competition? In my humble projection I do not foresee drastic price drops due to the landing of two fibre cables in the cost. There is just not enough competition. Maybe by March 2010 when EASSy lands and the Lion2 from Reunion Islands we shall see more serious competition. Also we need to understand the Last Mile solution also determines your final access cost! Maybe just maybe innovations such as that seen with triple play operator ZUKU might just be what will make Broadband Connectivity more accessible and possible more affordable! A seperation of the issues, personalities and corporations is essential then we may start to see some reasonable results. You were on local media news days ago on this issue. I immediately asked you to react to my letter which you chose not to citing away on travel, and busy with business. As of today, when I asked you when specifically you would respond, you reverted with a two-word email "Next week".
You see, our advocacy for quality, affordable, fairly-priced communication is not dependent on any service providers schedules or their ability to respond, via email, to our requests for information.
And in any case, we have the right to state our position regardless and I am very sure that you can respond well via various media.

Onyango, On a point of clarification - though I do not work for KICTANET or KENIC - on EAI-GF I noticed that Vincent had sent an email to Skunkworks, Kenya Internet Users lists and also had the same published in the print media. There were non-IT guys in the forum and they were contributing just as anybody else. So why the fuss? My argument will still be where is the so-called Consumer Rights body? Why didn't they attend the EAI-GF, for instance? I'm just short of understanding why should we just breath with fire online and fail to do the same when an opportunity is created? 2009/9/10 Onyango Hatari <onyango@inbox.com>

Thanks alot for the insight. I agree with you on many points but I chose to be blunt because all the time Michael Joseph has been talking its been about Kenyans and their peculiar habits and if you have attended any press conference you will know how Michael Joseph takes it personally. Michael Joseph should know that Kenyans and Kenyan Internet consumers are two different things because not all Kenyans use Safaricom Internet service and thats why we will respond to him personally the moment he becomes arrogant and feelingless.
On EA IGF. KICTANET decided on many issues which locks out stakeholders. Who is the major stakeholders and dependants on the internet in Kenya? Did we see Mashada owners and administrators invited, Skunkworks, Young Professionals, BidiiAfrica, Mama Mikes, Kenya Imagine, Home Boyz, NYC IV, babatoto.com, and many others who depends on the internet and even those who understand more about internet issues and have more stake and not the usual Nation Media, Safaricom and Capital FM.
The moment we discriminate with invitation then you create an opportunity for rebelion and people dont view you well. We want to see the young people operating various social media invited and take the podium as main speakers and then we get the government and private sector also to respond. Otherwise I dont need to attend the EA IGF because let me tell you that it will never unite and you will never have one voice with teh current discriminating attitude from KICTANET and the government
About recession, no ISP who is refusing to lower cost is talking about recession. None. We want them to give us figures and the losses they are making or see themselves make when they lower the costs.
Nobody will seperate personality from issues as long as personality generalise and attack population when face with issues

woooooo drama!
Interesting debate.... I am an Internet user, NYC IV member, partner for change who was invited to EA IGF through these lists. I do agree that there are a lot of consumer issues and for sure we need a strong civil society movement to lobby. But why did you not come to the EA IGF? Those of us who were there stood up and asked the questions. Shall we always complain as users or shall we attend whatever fora there are and make our contributions? Shall we ever even meet face to face as the consumer/users movement or shall we keep hiding behind the online discussions to complain insistently? Stand and be counted! This debate is so personalised that I can't help to wonder where the 'policy advocacy' aspect of kictanet forum is! By focusing on MJ and not Safaricom you make him more powerful! Yet he is just the CEO and for now its spokesperson. We shall do well , very well when we stop being so emotional and personal on matters of ICT at whatever level. Any other way leaves Desai and sour, may be even bad taste in the mouths of those we appeal to do xyz for the industry. Their(michael and others in similar positions of economic influence) first priority is to their shareholders; Recall the way Wako arrogantly but correctly advised parliament on the Ringera issue? That they can only request or express opinions and hope they will be considered by law interpreters(courts). Tough pill to swallow on an issue such the Ringera one but wako says only the court can interpret law. In the case of this forum, we should consider putting across our policy requests, opinions, views, suggestions in sober, objective and above board manner! Any other way will yield nothing, unless you take off from internet to the streets to protest or get commissions to be appointed to make recommendations (at your tax cost) which may never be implemented any way. What MJ is displaying is arrogance which is being permitted by Dr Ndemo. The arrogance where a poor investor can come to our country, borrow money from our banks and then after getting rich close shop the same day like GTV without anyone questioning.

Prejudged you is not at all correct
You were on local media news days ago on this issue. I immediately asked you to react to my letter which you chose not to citing away on travel, and busy with business. As of today, when I asked you when specifically you would respond, you reverted with a two-word email "Next week".
You see, our advocacy for quality, affordable, fairly-priced communication is not dependent on any service providers schedules or their ability to respond, via email, to our requests for information.
And in any case, we have the right to state our position regardless and I am very sure that you can respond well via various media.
regards,
