Orange to stop hosting non .ke domains
Hi, Just in case there are people as crazy as me to have hosted their domains with orange please note that they will not be renewing hosting for any domains that are not .ke. It is not life threatening as Safaricom and GoDaddy still do but doesn't this go against the objective of keeping local content local? What is the take on this by the Government of Kenya and the CCK? Regards PS. Just in-case I am missing a point here can somebody explain to me what the difference is between hosting a .ke or .com domain. Robert May be Orange just decided to be very .ke centric and only host those? I guess they are entitled to do that... Just wondering if there is any savvy business person on this list who can take advantage of that and enter into an agreement with Orange to seamlessly migrate hosting of the 'offending' domains.. :-) Regards *Ali Hussein* *CEO, 3mice interactive media ltd* *Partner, Telemedia Africa Ltd * Tel: +254713601113 Twitter: @AliHKassim Skype: abu-jomo LinkedIn: http://ke.linkedin.com/in/alihkassim<http://ke.linkedin.com/in/alihkassim> Blog: www.alyhussein.com On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 9:30 AM, robert yawe <robertyawe@yahoo.co.uk> wrote:

Bob, I have always maintained that *content* should dictate hosting location, ie. sites whose target audience is within Kenya should be hosted in Kenya, whatever the domain TLD might be. Conversely, where the target audience is elsewhere (for example, a safari website) even a .co.ke site should be hosted externally. This minimises 'internet miles' (my new term, borrowed from 'food miles' - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_miles) Orange's decision seems misplaced. Tony Your argument about local hosting presumes well developed and reliable infrastructure to handle traffic. Even though we have local web hosting and the KIXP to handle that, the truth of the matter is that we are still far from Utopia. The best example is during downtimes when undersea cables are cut. Ideally this shouldnt affect locally hosted sites right? Why then do we face issues even with the Google local .ke site? I would like to promote local hosting like most local business people but not at the expense of jeopardizing customer experience. The truth of the matter is that web hosting service providers require the level of investment and customer service that unfortunately is still not available locally. I love the concept of 'Internet Miles' but I am afraid it will require concerted efforts to move this in the right direction. Industry players find it difficult to collaborate in infrastructure building. We need to resolve this mindset first, pull investments together and let companies compete on service provision and innovation. The time is coming when this build out will have to be done with Government Collaboration otherwise we will forever be discoursing in lists on what might have been. *Ali Hussein* *CEO, 3mice interactive media ltd* *Partner, Telemedia Africa Ltd * Tel: +254713601113 Twitter: @AliHKassim Skype: abu-jomo LinkedIn: http://ke.linkedin.com/in/alihkassim<http://ke.linkedin.com/in/alihkassim> Blog: www.alyhussein.com On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 10:18 AM, Tony White <tony.mzungu@gmail.com> wrote:
