As you know, I and my colleagues worked with multiple stakeholders in Kenya on issues like hate speech, false news and using Facebook to amplify policy positions during the election. Regarding Cambridge Analytica, however, we categorically deny any allegations of political co-operation with one party over another during Kenya’s presidential elections, or support for any Facebook campaigns run by Cambridge Analytica.
I would be happy to answer any specific questions, with the caveat that this continues to evolve, and I will privilege accuracy over speed, given my interest in ensuring I get the most useful information to this group. As you may remember, I am also hiring an East Africa head of public policy, who will be based in region and even more accessible to you. I hope to do this in the next month or so! I, for instance, may be comfortable with my data being used for targeted advertising of a local coffee shop but not for academic research.
As for Cambridge Analytica, without condoning their behavior - especially lying about the use-cases of the data -, I pose the question: Where do we draw the line between political persuasion and manipulation of voters? Politicians are allowed to persuade voters to their side but when does it become wrong - especially on digital platforms?

As you know, I and my colleagues worked with multiple stakeholders in Kenya on issues like hate speech, false news and using Facebook to amplify policy positions during the election. Regarding Cambridge Analytica, however, we categorically deny any allegations of political co-operation with one party over another during Kenya’s presidential elections, or support for any Facebook campaigns run by Cambridge Analytica.
I would be happy to answer any specific questions, with the caveat that this continues to evolve, and I will privilege accuracy over speed, given my interest in ensuring I get the most useful information to this group. As you may remember, I am also hiring an East Africa head of public policy, who will be based in region and even more accessible to you. I hope to do this in the next month or so! If an in-person ask me anything would be useful-do let me know and we’ll arrange a conversation, with hope in the next few weeks.

For me, it is time social media giants stopped telling us what data is being requested by an app (i.e. friends, statuses, etc) and started telling us what the app wants to do with the data (targeted advertising, political persuasion, etc). This is because users are not aware of the possibilities when they voluntarily give out their data.

Since they have the use-case information, why not leave it to the user to decide which use cases they’re comfortable with and opt out of those they’re not? Then find a way way to manage use-case changes and inform the users thereto.
I, for instance, may be comfortable with my data being used for targeted advertising of a local coffee shop but not for academic research.
As for Cambridge Analytica, without condoning their behavior - especially lying about the use-cases of the data -, I pose the question: Where do we draw the line between political persuasion and manipulation of voters? Politicians are allowed to persuade voters to their side but when does it become wrong - especially on digital platforms?

As Data Scientists, we have for long pointed out Cambridge Analyticas dirty hands in mining data below is a statement from facebook newroom today detailing the extent of their aberration that's led to their subsequent suspension. Problem is there are a myriad of other apps out there still mining information from our phones and modelling nuanced targeted advertising that influences our decisions subliminally.
