Most visited websites in Kenya
Hello listers, I think it's unfortunate that over 300 of the top 500 most visited websites in Kenya are international http://www.hapakenya.com/2015/09/21/blogs-dominate-the-list-of-most-visited-...
This would bring a real discussion on Net Neutrality and what facebook are doing with internet.org. If sites like facebook.com and wikipedia.com are zero rated, ... do you expect there to be more uptake of our local content or do you expect to see more use of "free internet". In this case, the "Internet" is only FB and Wikipedia. ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya "There are some men who lift the age they inhabit, till all men walk on higher ground in that lifetime." - Maxwell Anderson On 24 September 2015 at 11:40, James Wamathai via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Hi James, I agree it is very unfortunate. It would be interesting to know why this is the case. Is the local content available online easily accessible and relevant to Kenyans? How are we promoting local content online and who is responsible for ensuring that we have more local content being consumed by Kenyans online? Ahmed & All That’s one part of the equation. The other one is about creating an unfair advantage for our content developers. Africa has lost its role in the story telling space. We are the continent that gave the world the folklore stories of Brer Rabbit and Wise Old Tortoise now claimed as part of American Folklore. As Mwendwa has said in his post, how do you get people to log in or even to know your content exists when its being crowded out by gilded gardens like internet.org <http://internet.org/>? There is a clear disconnect between what we do in the private sector and what policy makers craft. We must engage more in a meaningful manner. All too often we blame policy makers for making laws that are retrogressive. BUT we need to ask ourselves how many of us REALLY engage government in a meaningful manner? The time has come for talk to be declared cheap and get on with the program. We must come together to reverse this sad state of affairs. It's complicated. I think the biggest problem we have here is that people prefer International content and sites to Kenyan sites in general. You'll find that if I write a story about A, he'll never even bother to share it but if an International site does it, it's a real honour to them and they'll share the hell out of it. Also, even just news consumption. It's always better if it's foreign. A lot of traffic also goes to social networks and porn sites which we really don't have here. ----- [image: hapa kenya] <http://www.hapakenya.com> james wamathai / managing editor +254-722 352239/ jw@hapakenya.com http://www.hapakenya.com [image: Facebook] <http://facebook.com/uqweli> [image: Twitter] <http://htmlsig.com/#%23%23%23> [image: Google Plus] <https://plus.google.com/+JamesWamathai/> [image: Linkedin] <https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=88118555> [image: Instagram] <http://instagram.com/uqweli> [image: Skype] <http://htmlsig.com/#%23%23%23%23%23> On Thu, Sep 24, 2015 at 11:56 AM, Sylvia Musalagani <smusalagani@hivos.org> wrote:

Looks like there is a Social Innovation around this then that would lurk around the corner. This social innovation is packaged with appealing content and a message to call to action for people to support their own drive. Again, change can never happen if we do not give appealing content. If we had *content* that can be at par or at least close to western alternatives I guess we can sell the *value proposition* (message and call to action). I like what Nairobi Half Life did. Nairobi Half Life is a very good example of what I just mentioned above, it actually was in the cinemas. On Thu, Sep 24, 2015 at 12:21 PM, James Wamathai <jw@hapakenya.com> wrote:

@Ahmed, true about Nairobi half life. Infact, it featured on KQ International flights for a while. Just like the Naswas's and Kaa Rada have replaced the foreign content on our National Carrier. Meaning that appealing content will always find support from audiences. James With respect. I disagree. The content that trends the most in Kenya is very local indeed. #KOT anyone? :-) To add onto that. The most viewed programmes in Kenyan TV? (Apart from Premier League of course!!) :-) Are:- 1. Papa Shirandula 2. Mother in - law 3. Afrosinema (Read Naija) And other locally produced content. There is huge opportunity. Offline we are trying but online we have quite a bit to go before one can say we majorly consume Kenyan content on Kenyan platforms. To your point; Kenyan content trends on International platforms (twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp) and Kenyan sites probably get traffic coz of follow ups and then people move on to International sites. ----- [image: hapa kenya] <http://www.hapakenya.com> james wamathai / managing editor +254-722 352239/ jw@hapakenya.com http://www.hapakenya.com [image: Facebook] <http://facebook.com/uqweli> [image: Twitter] <http://htmlsig.com/#%23%23%23> [image: Google Plus] <https://plus.google.com/+JamesWamathai/> [image: Linkedin] <https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=88118555> [image: Instagram] <http://instagram.com/uqweli> [image: Skype] <http://htmlsig.com/#%23%23%23%23%23> On Thu, Sep 24, 2015 at 12:28 PM, Ali Hussein <ali@hussein.me.ke> wrote:

That is not true Wamaitha. We love local content. It's more relevant to us. The problem is, hapakenya is not my home page. 90% of Kenyans homepage is google.co.ke ... google.com. How many times have I wanted to know what fun activities to do for my family in a weekend but I have no access to such info. Even when I get to sites who specialize on the same, I find they have not updated. So for content providers, continue producing, every day Content is like farming. Farmers plant, harvest, sell, go back to plant, harvest, sell. And search engines love updated new content. But the progress is good. We are not where we were 5 years ago. Like Elimu TV now enables KCPE students to revise using whatsapp. How cool can anything be than that? ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya "There are some men who lift the age they inhabit, till all men walk on higher ground in that lifetime." - Maxwell Anderson

Yes, content is there. But you see you insert a clause of "if you search for it properly". It seems we need to make that content more easily retrievable, and available too. I guess the content producers have discussed over and over again how to improve their Search Engine Optimization. Which mya be the missing link.
Also, if you wanted to, you could make a Kenyan site your home page or even subscribe to them which means you'll get updated chap chap.
My point was not on homepages per say. That was just an analogy to the bigger picture. My point is, how does your content get into the user's EYEBALL. You may have great content. But how does the user get to it, see it in her busy schedule ... How do you make your content stand out to the user segment you are targeting? Google stole my eyeball. :) Content is there, it might not be as much as the West but it's there but

I appreciate this, and commend the community for shoring up content. But the gaps are still yawning. A lot still has to be done. I can say (without facts) 90% of local content is FB, instagram, e.t.c. Social in nature. We have seen new relevant content that was never available before coming up, like the database of Granted Patents in Kenya developed by Strathmore University's Center for Intellectual Property and IP Law http://cipit.org/index.php/granted-patents-ap1 Or the digitization of all Kenyan laws including all case laws and Kenya gazette notices by kenyalaw.org in conjunction with Google. These are fantastic achievements that have ensured you have access to relevant information at your desk. ______________________ Mwendwa Kivuva, Nairobi, Kenya "There are some men who lift the age they inhabit, till all men walk on higher ground in that lifetime." - Maxwell Anderson
I get it now. I agree. A lot of marketing by content producers is needed so that people know that this content exists. On some fronts, local content always wins (M-PESA charges, phone availability + reviews etc) but a lot more need to be done. ----- [image: hapa kenya] <http://www.hapakenya.com> james wamathai / managing editor +254-722 352239/ jw@hapakenya.com http://www.hapakenya.com [image: Facebook] <http://facebook.com/uqweli> [image: Twitter] <http://htmlsig.com/#%23%23%23> [image: Google Plus] <https://plus.google.com/+JamesWamathai/> [image: Linkedin] <https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=88118555> [image: Instagram] <http://instagram.com/uqweli> [image: Skype] <http://htmlsig.com/#%23%23%23%23%23> On Thu, Sep 24, 2015 at 5:51 PM, Mwendwa Kivuva <Kivuva@transworldafrica.com
