Hi, It may be obvious to you by now that this is one of the issues that seems to create a "great rift valley" between the ICT Consumers Association on one hand and the "Consumers Federation of Kenya" (CofeK) - re; http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/InsidePage.php?id=2000032337&cid=15 . It may explain why the two cannot to working together in the "interest of the consumer" assuming they have the same "ICT consumer?" in mind. That said, are the Minister's actions in tandem with the law? Our PS, Bitange Ndemo sits on the Board that made a recommendation which the Minister is said to have squashed. Maybe Dr. Bitange Ndemo can tell us both sides of the story. Is it true (as some have insinuated elsewhere) that members of the CCK Board may have been induced by an unhappy ICT service provider who was unhappy with the DG's pro-consumer efforts? The CCK Board Members in question would be 1. Philip Okundi (Chairman), 2. PS Joseph Kinyua (Finance), 3. PS Bitange Ndemo (Information), 4. PS Francis Kimemia (Internal Security), 5. Alice Munyua, 6. Eunice Ombati, 7. Joe Kamau, 8. Kiriithi Njogu, 9. Matei Ndeti, 10. John Omo (CCK legal officer) and Mr Charles Njoroge (CCK Director-General). From the composition of the Board, it would be interesting to see how far such an argument would go. ***Apologies for cross-posting BUT the topic has the two sides (CofeK & ICT Consumers) giving opposing views on the two lists….NOTE: Both groups speak for "the consumer". Something is clearly amiss here. On Thu, Apr 7, 2011 at 2:20 PM, Alex Gakuru <gakuru@gmail.com> wrote:
Tom,
If you cam organise with whoever else may be interested, then we can have, say, a 2 hour face-to-face discussion where I can list and fully elaborate my basis of my grounds and every statement that I have made. But the organising must be up to you.
But in regard to "sharing the others' views" I am sorry I do not know what they are nor would I wish to (later) be accused of misreprensting anyone. You have to ask whomever "others" that you mean their view. Would this not be appropriate?
regards,
Alex

Alex,
Thanks for this but please, help me understand why I should celebrate. Is it because the minister has overturned the decision of the board or is it that Mr Njoroge's contract has been renewed? You seem to be sharing with us only your own views about the whole issue. Why are you not sharing with us the other views as well so that we can make our own decisions? By the way, if it is true, is what the minister is reported to have done in order?
Regards.

[Capital FM] BY EVELYN NJOROGE
NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 7 - The rift between the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) board and the management continues to widen with reports that the Director General Charles Njoroge has been sent on compulsory leave two months to the expiry of his contract.
The board’s chairman Philip Okundi however said the action taken was not personal but part of the responsibility of the board.
But as they let go of Mr Njoroge, there seems to be division even within the board itself after the representative of the Broadcasting Content Advisory Council Alex Gakuru said they were not consulted on the issue to either renew or reject the DG’s contract.
Mr Gakuru added that his views were not sought when the board conducted an appraisal of Mr Njoroge who was said to have performed below par despite previous reviews stating the contrary.
Speaking to Capital Business, he questioned why the board was quick to fire the DG while Information Minister Samuel Poghisio had referred the matter to the State Corporation Advisory Committee (SCAC) for direction.
“Why are they behaving like a rebel board that does not follow what the minister says? He (the minister) is the appointing authority and has the final word and as the Broadcasting Content Advisory Council, we will wait for him to give the direction on this matter,” Mr Gakuru said.
Reports have been rife that Mr Poghisio had threatened to dissolve the board should a review from SCAC show that due process was not followed in evaluating the Director General’s performance and hence the hasty move by the Okundi-led team. ...
