I applaud the concept of 'free services'!!! However, my point is, is this a level playing ground for all service providers? We have come along way on the DLP & the govt should make every effort to avoid anymore pitfalls at the last mile.
We have great ideas, but always tumble on the implementation. Do due dilligence ....that's it!!!

@Walu, @Lawrence and all
Sometimes free actually means just that. :-) Internet in schools - full access not the walled garden variety is a good thing for all.
Let's applaud Safaricom for this great initiative instead of looking a gift horse in the mouth.
CS Mucheru has even said that the first pilot will also include Airtel.
This is great Corporate Social Investment.
The telcos are stepping up.

Just read in today's dailies that Airtel has woken up and smelt the coffee - and now offered to providing 'free' internet service to primary schools.
Apologies to our international readers who may google but still never get the translation - Ukichelewa chelewa utapata mwana si wako :-)
walu.
True that @Walu & Wangari.
Were the other providers requested if they could provide similar services ...free or not? It should be a level playing ground.
Even if Safaricom stepped up and offered the services (for free), I wonder what obligations they would expect the govt to make in the future.

lnjogu@hotmail.comWarm Greetings Phyllis,
Thank you for the updates. It is exciting to just imagine little fingers have their digital world opened up.
On the internet component, is this commitment you've cited open to any other provider who would be interested to commit to give free internet?
Secondly is this offer similar to the free facebook internet discussion that was in this community aka net neutrality discussions?
Have a blessed day.
Regards/Wangari

@Walu
Safaricom made the commitment and will offer the internet free of charge from their funds.
