This is really brilliant, Wesley...!
Again, it narrows down to who would take charge to
get all this vested interests together to a round table
so
that a bigger, and clearer picture that can be seen
clearly, can emerge - For instance, that indirect benefits
can accrue especially on the marketing front & on
publicity.
Then, after the interested parties have been 'sat' down,
and shown the way around, and they can realize that - in
the long run they stand to benefit, not necessarily in form
of returns in 'hard cash', then they will speedily move
into action to implement what needs to be implemented
especially since we have the resources to do just that.
On the flip-side of the coin, it also means that
there is a more bigger picture as well - that the country at large
stands to benefit in the longer run. And such thinking is
called "pragmatism".
Then, when we have such kind of thinking replicated in all
other sectors of our beloved country, then we will be
right on track headed for tremendous progress and growth. When
we will emerge from this colonization of the
mind, which is - "What is in it for me?" - either
individually, or corporately in everything we lay our hands on
- then we will truly be on way to revolutionizing
the country.
What is becoming
tiresome now, is that this forum has quite a lot of ideas and brilliant
recommendations that
come up and "go up in smoke", as a saying from
some remote village goes..
It is time ,the voices here get to be heard
loud and clear where it matters, so that we just do not talk but
we
also make sure that those concerned get to listen, and
pay attention, change course and be held to
account..
I believe that in the last 1-2 weeks alone, some
very important issues that do not only concern this forum,
but
the sector and the country at large have been
highlighted here, which needs
urgent attention. Some of these
issues are
brazenly holding back the very gains some valiant people have worked hard
to realize in this industry.
At worst, they tend to hold the country - especially
the consumer at ransom.
Now, I think the forum can do with some
answers from the concerned parties..? Is it possible for the secretariat
to please collate the most urgent highlights,
and
direct to the main players, from whom we
seek answers.
Harry
Thanks Waudo!
But why at a fee? KDN has 1Mb for
$600. May be KDN can give them a deal for more bandwidth. 5Mb would be
about $3000 per month, $36,000 a year. I hope KAA is not looking at making
a business out of this-Hahahaha.
If installation costs and on-going
costs are too high for KAA, let the Kenya Tourism Board, Airlines and
other sectors that can benefit chip in. I don't even see the reason why
they should because KAA will ultimately gain when more tourists and
foreign businesses are set up in Kenya because of their experience with
the free Kenyan broadband.
Most people flying around can definately
afford the internet but there is a bigger picture here. It's not about
making some profit. It's about showing how confident Kenya is in it's
telecommunication infrastructure. For any profit to be made or even to
break even they would charge the tourists more than they would pay in
Asia, Europe and US. But imagine the punch they get when it's good quality
internet and free! Then you have a couple of posters saying, "Freely
connect to our fast BroadBand!" And all tourists and people on transit
will definately want to give it a try. And some Kenyan content can be put
in the default page that opens up. May be some nice places to visit in
Kenya, do shopping, ...
While they are at it why dont they put
flat screens showing Kenya's wildlife and tourism sites. If Nakumatt,
Uchumi and Tuskys have them at their tills, why not JKIA.
Kenya
Tourism Board spent millions with their advert campaign in CNN. If they
work together with KAA to provide this free internet for a fraction of
their marketing costs they would be effectively targeting people who are
more likely to visit Kenya or people who are more likely to know people
who can visit Kenya.

Antony Wachira, head of ICT at KAA tells me that they are at
procurement stage. The service will be concessioned and will be
available at JKIA and Moi Airport at a fee to users.

Robert, Wesley - I am attending a conference in Mombasa with
the head of ICT at KAA - so I will mention this to him tomorrow and
hear what he says. I agree its a problem. There should be pervasive
airside and landside wireless, preferably free like in Singapore and
Dubai airports.
And Rwanda!

*Sigh* I lack words on how to start this.
I don't have to explain it. Can something be done
ASAP so that JKIA can have free, fast WiFi Internet
accessible everywhere (even from the toilets). Now,
how can Kenya boast of broadband when the gateway to
Africa (JKIA) has nothing to show of it. Imagine the
very many passengers who use KQ (and other airlines)
from all around Africa who pass by our airport:
Company Directors, CEOs, CTOs, CFOs, ... Basically
people who Kenya is trying to reach in order to
attract investments in various sectors including IT.
These are the same people going to invest in the
rest of Africa. It's beyond my thinking why JKIA has
never tapped into this even before the fibres
came.
It's been a couple of months since I
was there. Perhaps someone who was there more
recently can give us an update on the current
situation. I sure hope it has
changed.
