Interesting... The Chinese would tell you that we are already living in interesting times. I have always said that we cannot purport to build and BPO industry unless we work hard to build our capacities. India and S. Korea are not IT powerhouses because they built technology cities. They went out of their way to train their people. They invested in people. Those people work for Western companies while in their homes, or they go there and work and repatriate their income. They also innovate and produce products that earn their countries foreign exchange. They don't train University and Tertiary students on 10 packages at Ksh 5,000. They teach them the hard stuff! They dont teach them how to deploy packaged software, but how to develop their own software. I hope that the new ICTA will keep this in mind. Maybe it is. But it is something I have stated repeatedly here when I was questioning the rationale of endless visits to the US instead of using that money to bring venture capitalists to come and meet innovators here.
If an organization does well it does well and it is recognized. If it doesn't, it should be criticized and many blogs have criticized this organization to no end.
Actually, when Kukubo left, I said the board should be disbanded or overhauled completely and every position advertised to be filled competitively.
And this is not from reading articles, it is from first hand experience.
True, some good people exist but everything rises and falls with leadership.

That's really harsh, i think we need to be objective and look at it through a SWOT binocular, in some cases the ICT board did well in my opinion, let us objectively analyse its weaknesses because the new authority might learn a thing or two from that.

My feelings on this board are not hidden. I have made them here.
Corruption, lavish living and travelling unnecessarily, lack of a focused strategy, employing overpaid, clueless prima donnas who acted as if the world owed them and overall poor management and oversight plagued this organization.
Actually, if it was properly audited, the ICT Board should see several individuals jailed and surcharged.
Know-it-alls employed within its ranks did nothing but stifle innovation and frustrate innovators.
The new authority should seek assistance with the crafting of its Vision and Mission which will then guide it in executing its mandate in a focused manner.
As I indicated when we were discussing the M-Pesa platform, I really don't like the stifling of innovation because when let free you never know what new things these minds will come up with. We need to allow for disruptive technologies to come up.

James
