Hello All

I tend to admire the effort that China took a  few years back to fight corruption. Economic wise we are not comparable to China but we can pick a few lessons. the policy the government took through banning all Luxury spending had a ripple negative economic effects thereafter but had enormous and positive impact on the fight against corruption. some luxury product ...companies were driven out or closed shop in China which was good or bad depending on the perspective. Suppose the same policy is replicated in Kenya. leave alone the taxation policies on Luxury goods that Gava seems to be pursuing, What if they where banned in Kenya.

Ali,

The importance of declaring your wealth is that it sets a baseline; much the same way if you are being tested for High Blood Pressure, you need a known baseline‎ from which everything is measured against.

The easiest way to fight corruption is to ask Public servants to declare their wealth and then do studies either targeted or randomly to confirm the stated details.

Without wealth reports, you're left to only gathering intelligence on ‎suspects; a much more expensive exercise.

Respectfully, I disagree with you.

It’s not the act of sharing one’s net assets and income that will stop corruption in itself. In that you are right. It’s what we do with that information.

So for example in Bob’s case. He, by virtue of sharing his information has said that his income and assets list, by virtue of him being a public servant is not a private matter anymore and you can track them when he was CEO and when he leaves. That in itself is (or should at least be!) a major deterrent of income accumulation using underhand methods.

It is a part of a bigger solution. But its a beginning.

Thanks & Regards

Let's assume that Collymore's gesture is followed by all public & private officers declare their wealth on a regular basis - will this exercise eventually lead to an end or even of corruption? Absolutely not.
The only sure result is near-accurate profiling of persons based on how much they have. Woe unto you if you are worth little - you cannot even get a seat at a wedding or funeral. On the other hand if you have a lot you'll attract all manner of lazy idlers who will forcibly 'ask' you to share with them...often in life threatening scenarios.
The only way of ending corruption is to simply STOP STEALING.

Great gesture from Bob Collymore. But he also must tell the world who is the beneficial shareholder of Mobitelea. That disclosure will ensure that the telecommunications industry in Kenya can now lead the fight against corruption.

Thanks Ali for sharing this.
This is a laudable move that should be emulated by not only the government employees and officials but also by those in the private sector; for it takes two to tango, and this applies to corruption too. A less corrupt private sector will lead to dry bowls for govt employees who might be in the habit of soliciting 'small tokens'! This two pronged approach will help to drain the corruption pipe.

Dear Listers

A lot has been said about our leaders responsibility in ending corruption in our country. A lot still has been talked about regarding leaders declaration of assets to ensure transparency in dealing with this issue. I cannot say that there has been much done or someone coming out publicly and making this available for all to see.

Until now.

Here’s Bob Collymore’s declaration of Income and Assets as at 8th December 2015.

Also, here a post Bob released yesterday on corruption and the role of public sector:

The gauntlet has been thrown.

Shall we start with all the new CS’ and PS’ that have just been nominated?

I believe this is a first start towards slaying the corruption dragon.

Kudos Bob for leading the way!!
