Hi Barrack,

This may be a great opportunity to develop policy to guide in such situations, it seems a grey area so far.  Social media is here to stay and so are state officials, there may be a need to give guidelines on how state officials should manage social media presence while balancing both personal and official engagements with their audiences.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out moving forward.

Kind regards,

Rosemary Koech-Kimwatu

Dear Barrack,

Define 'harass them" sometimes the same people who are accountable to the citizens have blocked people from making "hard"  inquiries. I think public figures need not block people for making honest inquiries and if they amount to harassment, we have laws in place to deal with that.

Kind Regards,

Many thanks Egline, i stand to be corrected but the law views institutions as corporate citizens, i bet they have a right to block people who harass them. I wonder what the learned friends on the list would say.

Hi Barrack,

Interesting conversation. In this context the deleted account was a personal account and not the ministry's account. As much as in they were posting day to day activities, it was a personal account and the Ministry account with previous activities and information is till active.

Next question arising from the comments on the Tweet would then be, with the Twitter accounts that are public property is it right to block citizens?

Hi Barrack,
I feel we might be a bit petty because...Is it a requirement in the first place to have a personal social media account if you are holding a particular position in Govt?

Listers,

An interesting conversation is going on on Social Media following the decision by a Cabinet Secretariat to delete his Social Media Account. In fact a Senior Counsel has already weighed in on the issue. Is there merit in the concerns being raised or are we being petty?

Thank you

Best Regards
