Riyaz, That's fine. Muthoni are you in for Tuesday? Rgds On Fri, Nov 14, 2014 at 10:03 AM, Riyaz Bachani via kictanet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:
Muthoni,
We can arrange a visit for Tuesday to the EADC (KDN Datacenter). It's quite something, and you will see. Ngigi - karibu also - Tuesday morning ?
If more members are interested, we can arrange a second visit with Dan Kwach - the GM there. I'm happy to help facilitate.
Angani, like any other Cloud provider, has to build in enough redundancy - we now have nodes running in 2 separate datacenters, along with using at least 2 ISPs etc. The next step is for whoever is building the applications - to take advantage & incorporate DB and application-level redundancy into the app.
For us, and for businesses as well - high availability is very possible in Kenya - just comes with investing in redundant infrastructure e.g. get 2 ISP links to your office - both don't have to be expensive "corporate" links - add in a JTL or Zuku 10mbps link. Maybe use a BRCK to handle failover to 3G ;)

We are talking applications not websites. And data centres are not about processors, far from it.
Tell me more about the KDN and Safaricom data centre high availability. Real stuff i mean. I am happy to do a site visit.

@Dorcas,
There are very few local websites that would need scalability past Duo CPU / Multi-core setups with good memory so i guess scalability is easily sorted or is a non-issue.
In terms of redundancy, two local sites would pull the trick very well IMO. Say KDN Data Center with Sfaricom Data Center as a hot backup.

I would be keen to learn on any high-availability data centres that can scale locally. Yes, i challenge you give me a site visit!
Although i would prefer the services hosted in a local data centre, i am doubtful that we have any that would scale well.

It would also be nice to see it hosted in Kenya (or at least Europe):

Great points. I think if the designers were looking at (in my humble opinion) emulating the Estonia and Singapore case studies then they are on to a great start. I'm thinking also (not sure though as it might just be serendipity) that they are using an iterative process to develop this.
One thing that definitely is a major UP is the use of local IP to develop the payment gateway!
Great start Team Kenya Government!

It looks great and well designed. Two comments:
1. This site should really be https everywhere. I see that the form submits to an https site but how does one validate that ahead of time without looking at the source? 2. I know it's 'eCitizen' but it would be nice if this worked for legal residents as well. Most legal residents don't have an ID that works in that system unfortunately.
Otherwise, great stuff!
Cheers, Adam
