McTim Money alone may not explain the motivation of a large number of these applications. Quite a substantial number of them were about two key things:- 1. Brand Protection. So Google going for .google is about just that. 2. Category Protection or close affinity to it and wanting to be associated with it. For example .app had one of the highest applicants. From Google to Amazon to some of the largest domain registrars. It would be interesting to watch some of these auctions and the domination fights attached to them.
