Walu Thanks for sharing and this story goes beyond tribe and ICT to really address what's wrong with our country in particular and Africa in general. This story epitomizes why most great minds never serve their country and we are left with mediocrity. What I'm convinced though is that we should never look beyond ourselves. It starts with US. If we as Kenyans elect the right leaders with the right focus and the right integrity the story of the Owinos of Africa will be a better one. It may be a cliche but we do get the leaders we deserve. May the Almighty rest your soul in eternal peace, my brother. snip ...Permit me to share Owino’s story for three reasons. One is personal. Owino was my friend. For many years we shared many great moments and uplifting conversations. I must however confess that in his final months, I was absent. Vibrant, hilarious, proud, witty Owino died lonely. Me and many of his friends, busy with the mundane things that occupy our time, had deserted him in his last months as he struggled with the vagaries of life after returning from a long sojourn in Rwanda. ... more snippets
...Owino suffered no fools and had no patience with mediocrity. I remember his days as a Director of Information Technology in one of the Presidential campaigns and the many ideas he implemented to make the Directorate one of the best in the campaign. I watched him consult for governments and listened to him advise youth on entrepreneurship and business. The saddest thing is that in a country which is highly tribalised, many, especially in power circles, saw Owino solely as a Jaluo. ..

Oh dear! Quite some sad news.
Owino Magana was indeed one of the pioneers in the development of the Government-ICT stakeholder engagements way back in the late 90s early 2000s.
May his Soul rest in peace.

Dear Colleagues,
Apologies for cross-posting.
As some of you may be aware, the late Owino Magana was a brilliant member of the ICT fraternity, a man ahead of his time. Owino passed on just over a week ago. By then, his life had taken a difficult turn. His family plans to lay him to rest this coming Saturday and have requested me to request all his former friends and colleagues to help them lay his mortal remains to rest. They will be holding a fundraising meeting this evening, Tuesday 1st March at Nairobi Baptist Church from 5pm. The funeral service will be at the same church on 3rd March at 11am. Assistance from all friends and colleagues will be appreciated. Donations can also be sent to Zachary Magana on 0792792694.
Thank you.
Gilda Odera
