There are a number of issues we should discuss here(for stakeholders to give a formal reaction to our policy makers); including Internet affordability as is set to be affected from the raise of VAT from 15%-20%. And taxes from infrastructure/ISP level on how they are going to affect community networks. All these in the global and national context of working towards a digital transformation agenda that speaks to the current realities in Africa. Best regards. Liz. Bad idea, which should and probably will be challenged in Court.
Two reasons...one, government has not proven trustworthy and transparent when it comes to data and in such situations rarely creates parameters on who can access the data and how it will be processed.
Second reason, the legality of it all. The right to privacy is a cardinal right and should be only be limited for specific purposes. It is crucial that warrants are obtained from Court in cases where there is clear tax fraud or a reasonable apprehension of tax fraud. Where KRA cannot justify or demonstrate a reasonable apprehension before or after the fact, it's a clear case of government overreach.
It's too bad that Parliament, like the rubber stamping authority it has become will pass this, no questions asked.
Kind regards, Masibo
