@Ali *1. First things first. In a global digital world is a unique #digitalidentity paramount?* Yes, a unique digital identity is paramount. For above board operations it provides ease of doing business in the digital sphere. You are you wherever you are physically but also in every digital device around the world on command. For under the table operations it is an asset that can be hawked to the highest bidder. *2. Are Privacy First principles being adhered to?* On paper they are. They would not parade disregard for privacy openly for legal reasons. It is what happens behind closed doors that should concern us. Can we trust the holders of this data not to be greedy for gain(we can not), are there mechanisms stopping them from being greedy(role of techies), are there mechanisms to alert the public that their trust in the company has been betrayed(role of techies/CSOs)? *4. Should a private company be allowed to build such a powerful conglomeration of different human needs? * Should govts be allowed to do it? Should any entity, govt or public be allowed that much power. The answer is NO. *and if so what are the failsafe solutions in place if something were to go wrong? * The only space for an effective failsafe solution lies in regulation. Robust regulation that touches on the technical make up of any data system to ensure adherence to law even before it starts collecting data and that offers such punitive deterrence measures that it would be unwise for even a billionaire to flaunt the regulations. *5. Last but not least, who has access to this humongous and important data being collected? and who owns it?* Capital has access to this humongous and important data. Those with capital/money have access to this data. The rest might benefit in as far as it allows for continued utility of the system but just breadcrumbs. Top layer as we say mtaani is for capital, the monied, be it billionaires or corporations and even foreign governments. They have access to it and to some extent own it. That chatgpt guy owns it all, to accumulate as much capital as he can. Gibson Maina On Thu, Aug 3, 2023, 12:45 Ali Hussein via KICTANet < kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> wrote:

Ok...Let me stop you right there! 😅 Let's not focus on one individual just because he is using more of his brainpower, unlike the rest of us! 😅 Let's stick to the issues at hand. Let me ask or share a couple of questions/thoughts:-
1. First things first. In a global digital world is a unique #digitalidentity <https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=digitalidentity&highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7091993967709331456> paramount?
2. Are Privacy First <https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=privacyfirst&highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7091993967709331456> principles being adhered to?
3. The company says it has made available 1.5k Orbs spread across over 35 cities in 20-plus countries across five continents to ramp up the signing-up capacity globally. According to the company, more than 2 million people have signed up for the identity during the two years beta phase.
4. According to its LinkedIn <https://www.linkedin.com/company/linkedin/> profile, the company says it is building the world's largest identity and financial network to serve as a public utility. Question - should a private company be allowed to build such a powerful conglomeration of different human needs? financial services, personal identity data etc? and if so what are the failsafe solutions in place if something were to go wrong?
5. Last but not least, who has access to this humongous and important data being collected? and who owns it?

@Ali Hussein <ali@hussein.me.ke> Isn't it too much from one person within such a short time? While we are still wowed at the capabilities of OpenAI projects, he's at it again with another groundbreaking "innovation" that will give the world a global cryptocurrency "backed by the world population".
Then again, we do not really know what or how much they are learning or know from these generative AIs and the enormous data they gathered to train them. They must be way ahead of time and that is why we should scrutinize how they'll handle such sensitive data before we allow our citizens to jump in.
That said, it is still a grey area and there is still a great deal of confusion and uncertainty among key government leaders as witnessed in this statement by the Chair ICT Committee at the Senate, Hon. Allan Chesang <https://twitter.com/HonAllanChesang/status/1686763716321083392>.

You make a point Eshuchi. Yesterday, I was in a meeting with some organisations working at the grassroots and this gentleman from Marsabit asked my opinion on this issue. I did not realise the discussion already iko "kwa ground" and there are concerns on data protection. I threw back the question and asked him what his response would be. He pointed out that wananchi need to know what that data will be used for before they can give it to a foreign organisation.
I have also been asked why there has not been any pushback from the stakeholders "and wondering who protects Kenyans from digital theft". My response is that we saw this matter raised here last year (by Kivuva) but really there was no response. He followed the matter again recently (the reason why we have this debate here) and also shared an advisory from the ODPC.
Please see this tweet from the CAS on the matter. https://twitter.com/OleItumbi/status/1686343173805596673?s=20
It is clear that there needs to be a discussion on this matter to set the record straight. In the meantime, Worldcoin already is holding a lot of data from wananchi. What next? Rgds GG

On the flip side, the laid back attitude from professionals speaks volumes.
‘It is ok for private business enterprises to handle personal data, but govt is where a line is drawn with all manner of rejection and speculation kosokoso’

Good afternoon Lydia
For many who are enrolling, I believe privacy and data protection are potentially alien to them. And while I believe they are core, many people plainly don't care. They are the masses. Mark Kaigwa did a thread for perspective - https://twitter.com/MKaigwa/status/1684883744602099712?t=roAfKHV-MhiY6KsfeUJGCw&s=08
But I would like to believe that they registered with ODPC.
Kind Regards
