Africa represents the fastest growing mobile subscriber region in the world. It is expected to continue growing at an annual compound rate of 7%.  It is expected that there will be about 525 million unique subscribers in the year 2020.  This will be approximately 49% of the population of the region. Actual mobile connections are projected to be 975 million.

the mobile industry is expected to contribute up to 6.2% of the region’s gross domestic product (GDP) or US$104 billion by 2020. The figures for 2013 are 5.4% and US$75 billion for GDP contribution.

It is projected that between 2014 and 2020 operators will inject a total of US$97 billion to cope with projected growth.

It is projected that 40% of all mobile devices will be smartphones by year 2020 compared to 5.1% in 2013.
