Dear Sir, Madam, We are pleased to invite you to an Open consultation on the UNESCO Draft Guidelines for the Use of AI in Courts and Tribunals, organized by the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa. This consultation is designed to gather feedback on the draft Guidelines from relevant stakeholders from the law and justice ecosystem as well as the private sector contributing to use of AI technologies within the judiciary of Africa. About the Draft Guidelines for AI Use in Courts and Tribunals: In 2023, UNESCO surveyed<https://www.unesco.org/en/articles/unesco-survey-uncovers-critical-gaps-ai-training-among-judicial-operators-0> its network of judicial operators to explore whether they are using AI systems and the perceptions around such use. In this survey, it was found that while many respondents were already using AI tools such as ChatGPT for work-related activities, only 9% of judicial operators surveyed reported that their organisations had issued guidelines or provided AI-related training, thereby underlining the need for guidance on the use of AI systems in courts and tribunals. Pursuant to the above, UNESCO developed the draft Guidelines for the use of AI Systems in Courts and Tribunals<https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000390781>. The draft Guidelines aim to offer guidance to courts and tribunals to ensure that the deployment of AI technologies aligns with the fundamental principles of justice, human rights, and the rule of law.
