Nothing to do with ownership. The Network Effect is keeping Safaricom dominant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_effect Add MPESA to Voice and ..... Service providers need to focus on services that Safaricom cannot offer well due to the high numbers on their network. Think video .... No informed consumer would take Safaricom video services seriously .. but again (bad) Business in Africa seems to thrive on ignorance ... And Safaricom may just lay cable (fiber) and surprise us with not too bad video services. MJ probably socializes more with Kenyans (Africans) and feels what is on the ground better than other expats do. Does it also not help employee morale to know that their boss does not look down on them? On Thu, May 6, 2010 at 5:51 AM, <emmanuel.khisa@kadet.co.ke> wrote:
There seems to be alot of heat regarding the new regulations, quite frankly the three other players aside from Safaricom are just not getting some things right, in the process they are engaging themselves in this defeatist celebration. My contention with the whole local Telco Industry is the infiltration of the Foreigners. I dare say here that no more than 49 percent of our mobile network operators should be owned by foreigners. The evidence is all clear, companies run by majority local holding have much better understanding of consumer needs and local dynamics and this visible in banking the Equity Banks, KCB, Family Bank. So that while the big multinationals come in reep big monies and leave, the local entities focus on reaching the remote villages. If anyone recalls isnt that the same strategy Safaricom employed and nailed it when the then KENCELL was too busy with focussing on urban elite. I therefore am of the view that next telcomms and generally ICT licensing whose target is to change the local game must not allow these Foreign Acquisition. I may be wrong but since the 90s am yet to see a local entity taken over by foreigners that stood strong there after....and sadly many cases stand as witness...Africa Online, RVR, Telkom..(Can I say Telkom again)...far too many excuses, very little to write home about. So the root is in the ownership model at inception or at acquisition. I suggest that we move from 30% local ownership to 51%+ in order to have some semblance of control in what these foreign boards are deciding for this market. Whether that is practical I don't know.
Finally if MJ is reading this email, I'd urge, ignore the detractors and do what you do best, solutions to the market that make sense. DON'T GET TIED DOWN in trying to state your case. Majority of Kenyans are behind,,, :-) Just spoke like a politician there!

I suppose the ultimate customer need to be at the heart of it all, so that it does not turn into a 'hide and seek' that we are engaging in. I suppose a number of things need to be clarified to all the main players in this market on why we should take up such a policy line, for whose benefit is intended, and how it will foster growth and progress in the sector, and for the overall country's economy. These are the ingredients.

Listers,
Did anyone listen to Michael Joseph on Radio this morning, concerning this dispute? Frankly I was rather taken aback by some of the things he stated the new regulations require Safaricom to do, among them giving notice to competitors whenever they plan to hold promotions! In my view and I stand to be corrected, the solution to all this is enabling number portability and may the best company win or retain the subscribers. Something tells me that Safaricom would infact gain more subscribers! On another note, soon after Michael Joseph's interview, the news headline stated that the DG of CCK had stated that Safaricom was not affected by this regulation because "CCK had not yet declared Safaricom the dominant player".
Can anyone explain what is going on?

Walu,
Dont bother to leave Lokichogigio. Trust me to get you the regulations at your utmost convenience. As a way of balancing the equation I hope that the small fee you contemplated paying to the government printer will be credited to my account once you access the gazette notices from http://www.kenyalaw.org/LegalNotices/

Someone told me the copies of this regulations are available at the Government Printers at a small fee. Halloo? Assuming I leave in Lokichoggio, Should i spend two days on the road to come and pickup some hard-copy regulations that should be downloadable?
Sergon, can you help me, where does this leave you with your eGovernment stories?

Just seen a loud complaint from Safcom in today's Daily Nation. They quoted four regulations that have been gazetted and I have searched www.cck.go.ke to get a mouse on them but failed.
Anybody with e-copies on these regulations or specific url can plse update.
