It's not just about privacy. It's about monetization in the digital world. We are going to see a lot of these unless corporates start appreciating the New Digital World Order. In another life, 😀 models were used to signing release forms based on geographical parameters - for example, 'you can only use my image in Kenya and East Africa'. Now we are seeing release forms speaking of global coverage and separate digital platforms coverage.

A court has ordered the University of Kabianga to pay a former  University of Nairobi student Sh500,000 for using his image in online marketing and soliciting funds from a regional bank without his consent.

Sitting at the High Court in Kericho, Justice Asenath Ongeri declared that the university violated fundamental rights to privacy and human dignity by publishing an image of Mr Shimlon Mwangi Kuria without his express consent.

Are we in a privacy awakening? What is the importance of these decisions to the right to privacy and do they reveal an awareness gap on privacy rights, especially on the part of higher learning institutions? How do we boost awareness among these institutions?
