Congratulations to someone, maybe madame Rono. On Thu, 28 Jan 2010 06:26 -0800, "wesley kirinya" <kiriinya2000@yahoo.com> wrote: Thanks Waudo! But why at a fee? KDN has 1Mb for $600. May be KDN can give them a deal for more bandwidth. 5Mb would be about $3000 per month, $36,000 a year. I hope KAA is not looking at making a business out of this-Hahahaha. If installation costs and on-going costs are too high for KAA, let the Kenya Tourism Board, Airlines and other sectors that can benefit chip in. I don't even see the reason why they should because KAA will ultimately gain when more tourists and foreign businesses are set up in Kenya because of their experience with the free Kenyan broadband. Most people flying around can definately afford the internet but there is a bigger picture here. It's not about making some profit. It's about showing how confident Kenya is in it's telecommunication infrastructure. For any profit to be made or even to break even they would charge the tourists more than they would pay in Asia, Europe and US. But imagine the punch they get when it's good quality internet and free! Then you have a couple of posters saying, "Freely connect to our fast BroadBand!" And all tourists and people on transit will definately want to give it a try. And some Kenyan content can be put in the default page that opens up. May be some nice places to visit in Kenya, do shopping, ... While they are at it why dont they put flat screens showing Kenya's wildlife and tourism sites. If Nakumatt, Uchumi and Tuskys have them at their tills, why not JKIA. Kenya Tourism Board spent millions with their advert campaign in CNN. If they work together with KAA to provide this free internet for a fraction of their marketing costs they would be effectively targeting people who are more likely to visit Kenya or people who are more likely to know people who can visit Kenya. 8~! --- On Thu, 1/28/10, waudo siganga <emailsignet@mailcan.com> wrote: From: waudo siganga <emailsignet@mailcan.com> Subject: Re: [kictanet] [ke-internetusers] JKIA-Lack of wireless internet To: kiriinya2000@yahoo.com Cc: "KICTAnet ICT Policy Discussions" <kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke> Date: Thursday, January 28, 2010, 3:54 PM Antony Wachira, head of ICT at KAA tells me that they are at procurement stage. I don't have to explain it. Can something be done ASAP so that JKIA can have free, fast WiFi Internet accessible everywhere (even from the toilets). Now, how can Kenya boast of broadband when the gateway to Africa (JKIA) has nothing to show of it. Imagine the very many passengers who use KQ (and other airlines) from all around Africa who pass by our airport: Company Directors, CEOs, CTOs, CFOs, ... Basically people who Kenya is trying to reach in order to attract investments in various sectors including IT. These are the same people going to invest in the rest of Africa. It's beyond my thinking why JKIA has never tapped into this even before the fibres came. It's been a couple of months since I was there. Perhaps someone who was there more recently can give us an update on the current situation. I sure hope it has changed. 8~( -----Inline Attachment Follows----- _______________________________________________ ke-internetusers mailing list ke-internetusers@bdix.net http://www.bdix.net/mailman/listinfo/ke-internetusers "Those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt the ones doing it." -old proverb _______________________________________________ kictanet mailing list kictanet@lists.kictanet.or.ke http://lists.kictanet.or.ke/mailman/listinfo/kictanet This message was sent to: mucheru@google.com Unsubscribe or change your options at http://lists.kictanet.or.ke/mailman/options/kictanet/mucheru%40google.com -- Joe Mũcherũ Regional Lead, Sub-Saharan Africa Google Kenya 7th Floor, Purshottam Place Westlands Road P O Box 66217 - 00800 Westlands Nairobi, KENYA +254 20 360 1701 Office +254 20 360 1100 Fax +254 20 360 1000 Switch Board (Regus) +254 722522135 Mobile http://www.google.com This email may be confidential or privileged.
