This seems to be the question of the week.With mainstream media recentlysplashing headlines to that effect, this conversation is likely to capture the imagination and concerns of Kenyans right through the election period. A court has put atemporary stayon the move by the Communications Authority (CA) while it hears and determines the matter, but it could be implemented if the courts so decide. Alex I think you missed my point. Which basically was this:- In a commercial arrangement one has a choice. In a 'National Security' scenario you simply don't. You go to court. Like Omtata did. In my humble opinion we are in a classic scenario of a Glass Half Full. For those of us who lived in the Pre-Multi Party era these sort of discussions would have landed ALL of us in Nyayo House. The fact that we have these freedoms makes us more determined to protect them. Thanks for sharing, Kanini. This issue reeks of sinister intents. For instance, if CA switched off 1.5 million counterfeit devices in 2012 without this DMS, why is it needed now? Listers The trend towards less internet privacy is spreading the world over. Western Countries unfortunately have been at the forefront of this worrying trend. Africa is simply catching up. Does this mean that we in Africa should simply give up and let our governments across the continent borrow a dark leaf from their counterparts in Europe and the US (as a lister seemed to suggest last week)? Not to mention that COFEK also claim they weren't consulted. Public trust of both govt and Telcos here is compromised. And it's up to CA especially to clear the air by proactive communication, not just chiming in when public fears have been stoked. It can't be emphasised enough, it's an election year. Fears -unfounded or not- are easily stoked. Additionally, as someone mentioned, CA needs to explain further the "surveillance" equipment it is supposedly deploying.
