He proposes a new business led initiative to frame global e-commerce rules, which would rival the WTO, which can keep making them for offline trade. And he is entirely serious, with Alibaba already working with a number of groups and intending to present the proposal to G 20 later this year.. To me it is a political shocker, but that is where much of multistakholderism ideology is headed. I wrote an op-ed on this issue in The Hindu, which is at http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/columns/a-borderless-economy-that-will-be-c… We must re-assess what does unhinging of the role of legitimate political actors in key public policy areas means. It just transfers power to a few global corporates to runs our societies as a corporatocracy. Listers So the Balkanization of the Internet is continuing apace despite efforts to slow it down or eliminate it. And the main culprits? The US, Russia and China. Excerpts from an article on this issue. Should we care? Should we as Kenyans also follow the example of these Super Powers? Did the Cold War even end? Moscow and Beijing, deeply resentful of American power, are again finding ideological common cause, jointly aiming at two pillars of the post-Cold War dispensation: a borderless Internet and international civil society. They are doing so on the declared basis of national sovereignty. Modern nationalism has proved much sturdier than Communist internationalism; besides, the jaded, if not cynical, Sino-Russian approach to globalization has more than an echo of resurgent nationalism in the West itself, not least with regard to the Internet. If this is not quite a Cold War, it is hard to see how such trends can lead, in any way, to peace or to prosperity. Listers, KRA is targeting mobile money as part of the agency’s financial data gathering scheme that is meant to monitor businesses and individuals who are not paying their fair share of taxes. People familiar with the plan said the taxman is at an advanced stage of rolling out a number crunching mechanism that will use electronic data to suggest incomes of those using mobile money to pay bills and make purchases. Happy Ladies Day! Certainly huge volumes run through the channels. The profits speak to it. A few days back, Google was fighting a government decree to it, tooth and nail to keep unacceptable content on its channels. I am waiting to see if our valued service providers have the guts to fight tooth and nail for their esteemed customers! Aside from that, when the Uber fire was hot, I mentioned that this would be the new human 'car' track. In a few years your movement will be tracked and your taxes computed from this. How might you afford all the travel, tracked already would be the question. Be blessed. The Fund for Internet Research and Education from AFRINIC has benefited seven Kenyans researchers and startups before. More Kenyans can benefit from this is the word goes around. AFRINIC has planned a Tweetathon to promote the FIRE program and ensure the communication on the grants has reached a wider audience within the Continent before the expiry date of 31st May 2016. The idea of a tweetathon is to have as many accounts tweeting at the same time on the same #hashtag (#FIREAfrica) that it may even trend on twitter. This way, we can communicate to our collective audience, with the language our audience understand. The Aim of the Fund for Internet Research and Education is to boost innovative solutions and research that enhance the use of ICT within the continent. Dr Waudo, you are correct in that assertion, but just partially. Remember the IFMIS system "hacking" that happened a year ago? A very highly placed person made allegations that systems were compromised, etc. Some years back, the Minister of Finance claimed of a "software bug" that inserted a typing error into his budget figures. There was also such reports from KNEC on "software bugs". If you are an ICT expert, you would always be able to read in between the line. And that is where ICT AUDITORS need to curve their niche. Not just cross over auditors, but ICT pros. Good afternoon Tony! Your take on desktops and laptops dying, I would give them still more time around as survivors. At least you agree on the work stations. Incidentally the innovations especially the smart phone ain't so smart as its name. From practical usage point, most models cannot hold power to keep working to match the features carried and the user needs they could satisfy. In this energy conserving times most are energy inefficient. Why do we allow them into our markets? To suck up energy that would be used up elsewhere. On the phone front, the basic phone 'mulika mwizi' is still the real go-to-survivor phone. Blessed day. Happy Furahi Day! I admire the service by the leaders and people in the respective agencies, their field is an ever evolving space, new each day. This is a circus and a BIG BIG shame on the Government front. Actually if this scenario is true and not misquoted by media, we should receive an apology for this. It is unacceptable. If the situation is that the agencies require mediation, we may offer it. This may just be the side-shows of the storm between them - which should not be the case. The matters in question are grave and have been ignored for so long with ripple effects across our society. So who has been responsible to act? You make us start focusing on the charade instead of the actual subject matter - which yes in this scenario requires someone to manage it for the public good! Why would agencies be scampering to the media whilst they are the same "body" and may engage with each other. It is time that the agencies (not only these ones) work together for the good of the public, being reminded " we achieve more together". If their roles overlap too much, then merge them to serve the public better. When they are unable to engage for progress and start airing linen in public, may the "mother" take charge and bring them back to line. The comment below in the said article reminds me that "a traitor for Ksh. 30"changed the course of mankind and each day our porous borders for a dollar make our nation susceptible to physical terror. What does feeding the mind with all that comes by in the name of "investors" do? Friends, There is a case to be made regarding what we air in broadcast media and its impact (especially) on children. A good approach would be to have in place comprehensive classification guidelines and standards for content to help content producers assess and classify their content. Next: extensive guidelines and advice on when what content is appropriate. ... and then there is the need for user awareness. Awareness (for the producer and consumer) is key and may work more effectively than blanket ban whose enforcement may prove a challenge. It is a challenge (in part) because it is hard, for instance to regulate what people watch on the Internet, what with the growth in smartphone ownership! ... we hear of stories of how internet cafes are major porn-watching and gambling dens! Listers See attached news clip. Couldn't find the online version. Good initiative. No doubt. However, I'm curious:- 1. Why is it that the study only focused on need for more cash? 2. I haven't seen the report but I'm hoping that it also includes an audit on how much has been spent since the fund was started, it's impact and challenges. Could whoever is on this list provide us with a link to review this study? 3. Why the Board, appointed to administer and execute this fund has been consistently missing in action on this list. Surely they don't have anything to hide do they? Silence speaks volumes. This forum isn't about just criticizing but about engaging and contributing to the development of ICTs in this country. Be a part of it. You can't ignore us forever. 4. Could the CA provide this forum and Kenyans at large a Performance Report on this very important component of our ICT development?
