Good evening team, During the last week we hosted an Active Defense for Adversary Pursuit training at Naivasha. The training focused on how to detect TTPs, used by the local adversaries in East and Central Africa. We used a CTI report that was handed to several Financial institutions on 13th December to enumerate attacks by these groups and how to fight them out of the infrastructure. That CTI Report was not shared with all banks but several had it and we have noted these tools are still active in our infrastructures, and hence deciding to take it public. The following are a few questions to guide our discussion:- 1) On the definition of Civil Registry a list of public agencies has been given, should these regulations apply to other state agencies which collect personal data for example the National Employment Authority, NSSF, NHIF etc or would these fit under a separate set of regulations? 2) What happens to existing civil registry databases, shall there be a transition for example IPRS, this is missing in the current draft? 3)The regulations make provisions for requests by public entities what about provisions for requests by private entities? 4) Do you feel that adequate provisions have been made for the protection of your data that will be held by civil registries? GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 1401 THE COMPETITION ACT (No. 12 of 2010) DIGITAL LENDING MARKET INQUIRY/SECTOR STUDY PURSUANT to the provisions of section 18 (5) of the Competition Act, 2010 ("the Act") it is notified for general information that in exercise of the powers conferred by section 18 (1) (a) of the Act, the Competition Authority intends to carry out a sector study into the regulated and unregulated digital credit markets in Kenya under financial support from Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA). Financial Sector Deepening (FSD-Kenya) and IPA will also extend technical support to this study. The main objective of the study is to identify and address potential consumer protection concerns in the regulated and unregulated digital credit markets. The specific objectives of the study will include— (a) Provide evidence regarding the size and nature of the digital credit market. (b) Identify potential consumer protection risks and consumer outcomes within Kenya's digital credit sector. (c) Increase transparency and comprehensiveness of product information and terms and conditions. (d) Address probable fraud in digital financial services. (e) Improve consumer redress for digital credit products. (/) Increase consumer control over personal information to expand choice and competition; and (g) Inform the development of policies to ensure adequate consumer protection across regulated and unregulated lenders and equal protection of all Kenyan consumers. In Conducting the study, the Authority — (a) Shall hold such number of meetings in such places and at such times as it may consider necessary for the proper discharge of its functions; (b) Will receive views from members of the public and receive oral and written submissions from any person with relevant information; and Any party from whom the Authority may require information from in furtherance of the study will be under an obligation to provide the information in and failure to do so shall be an offence under section 18 (6) of the Competition Act, 2010. Members of the Public with relevant information may also submit oral or written submissions to the Secretariat within twenty-one (21) days of publication of this notice. Looking at the document, it seems like the NTSA is trying to regulate the industry following the recent incidents that have come up: eg accidents, assisted crimes and digital taxi drivers woes. These regulations will require any digital hailing services; Uber, Bolt, and Swivl, to register in Kenya and operate under the Kenyan laws. They will also obtain operating licences from the NTSA. Greetings listers, NTSA has developed regulations for the the digital transport industry (the likes of ubber, taxify etc) The proposed regulations include: requiring the digital hailing companies to have a comprehensive data protection terms for their users, the drivers and the company will also have to register with NTSA as digital hailing operators, and it will also require the companies to give data to NTSA upon request. The Dorcas Muthoni PhD Fellowship is a tribute to our Doctor Honoris Causa Dorcas Muthoni. Dorcas Muthoni, a Kenyan engineer and entrepreneur, CEO and founder of the company Openworld, received our University’s highest recognition on 15th December 2017 for her significant work in the promotion of engineering studies among young women in Africa, the mentoring of young people, and her social commitment in the fight against poverty. This scholarship is aligned with our university institutional commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), it aims to contribute to quality education and gender equality for African Women. The main objectives of this fellowship are: *(i) to promote gender equality & contribute to reduce the gender gap in ICT*; by facilitating more women pursuing scientific/technological/engineering careers and lowering the barriers women face when pursuing careers in STEM disciplines *(ii) to share excellent research with African female researchers during their PhD Studies*.
