Made up of 1. Application development and deployment 64,575 Million USD 2. Applications 129,838 Million USD 3. Systems Infrastructure software 78,068 Million USD Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, SAP, Symantec, HP, CA. EMC Adobe and Fujistu are the leading vendors. Conclusion from our reading this report: - Certain global company technologies dominate and the ability to develop and deploy solutions on top of these technologies can greatly enhance a country's overall ICT competitiveness. - Most global enterprises run some of their critical operations on the back of these. Indeed the biggest ICT projects in the private sector here relate to deployment of solutions. e.g in CRM at Safaricom and Kenya Airways, in ERP at EABL, BIDCO, SHELL, and indeed in Financial Management in Government. - The consultancy, project management and deployment of these platforms is a huge business opportunity. Indeed many shared services and outsourcing functions include supporting or using these platforms as part of wider business operation or process. Many successful ICT firms in Kenya are in this space. Some of the venture capitalists / and private equity managers in Kenya have asked us to encourage more ICT entrepreneurs to operate their businesses around established platforms.They would be willing to fund more Oracle or Cisco certified firms. Am glad that Uganda has picked this up. Indeed the current IPv4 numbers are so depleted that estimates show that the last bunch (slash /8s of IPv4) numbers from IANA (or ICANN) will be distributed some time in Q1, 2011. You can check this some of these Statistics on the AfriNIC or other sites below: http://www.afrinic.net/statistics http://ipv6.he.net/statistics/ @Ronald, Yes we have no reason to panic in as far as what to do next is concerned i.e. adopt IPv6 the next generation internet protocol. BUT we have EVERY REASON to worry because the adoption in Africa is extremely poor. What these means is that as the developed economies adopt IPv6, at time will come when they may opt to run IPv6 ONLY services and then African Users will begin to wonder why they are unable to access services (e.g. youtube, cnn.com, twitter etc) @ Wire, IPv4 depletion and assosciated challenges are as real as u and me. Update on Pasha Centres

Listers Ø Kenya ICT Board will facilitate the establishment of digital access centers, to be known as Pasha Centres across the country. Ø Facilitation will take the following form o An Entrepreneurs will obtain a loan from Family Bank for up to a maximum of Kshs 3M to set-up or expand and existing digital access centre. o Kenya ICT Board will provide a technical consultant to support the technical set up and management. o Branding and communication support in order to manage the Pasha Brand and drive consumer interest and usage. o Management of the Pasha Community portal to allow collaboration and knowledge sharing among Pasha managers. o Continuous Training and skills development for Pasha Owners. o Liaison with public sector and local and international content providers who may want to access the public through the Pasha network. Ø *Pasha Centres will provide a variety of services that could include the following:* o Internet access, including serving as wifi hotspot providers for the area. o Training and educational material provision o Mobile and agency banking o Other retail services o Money transfer services o Government services o Jobs bureau o Supply chain facilitation including assisting retailers and wholesalers with IT needs o Technology support centres for the region o Tourism support o NGO Liaison support o Data collection for government, NGOs and private sector o Business Process outsourcing and data entry services *The Plan* Ø Monday 24th January 2011, public launch of Pasha Project. Ø Target date for first disbursement of loan is 90 days from launch date. The disbursing bank will require 90 days to review applicants and conclude initial loan disbursements. Ø Disbursements will be made to entrepreneurs who fulfill agreed conditions and don’t necessarily have to be among those that had received Pasha training prior. Kenya ICT Board in 2009 and 2010 had conducted nationwide 3 week training of 1000 people in business management, entrepreneurship, marketing, basic accounting and technical management (a starter-kit) to prepare potential pasha managers to run Pasha centre. Ø The agreement with the bank is to ensure we disburse at least one loan per county within the year. Our eventual target is to have 210 pasha centers, one in each constituency by 2012. We shall asses the appetite and would not be surprised if the demand for loans exceeds our target. Ø We shall encourage entrepreneurs to partner with the networks and any other organizations to beef up their business plans in preparation for loan application and to make their businesses more commercially viable. *Mechanics of disbursement * All applications will be forwarded to family bank for commercial assessment. Family bank and an committee appointed by the Kenya ICT Board will assess the best loan candidates on a set of agreed criteria and award the loan against this and a sound and verified business plan. We shall be keen to ensure that people don’t push through paper plans for the sake of cash. Universal Access in Kenya (Is it really working?)

Listers, For those of you who missed the ICT/Poverty conference this morning, one of the prominent issues that came out is the fact that Kenya is NOT doing enough to address universal access to communication services! As a result, issues of vulnerability, asset poverty and physical poverty (access to services) persist! Comparative results from our neighbours in East Africa shows that they are scoring on some of these issues. There's talk of digital villages and the UA Fund - yet there is no delivery! what's not going right? Edith

Orange stinks as a registrar

Hi, I found out that KENIC was down after I noticed that mail sent to my domain hosted by Orange/Telkom was bouncing. Now that KENIC is back up I check the status of my domain and notice that it expired on the 19th of November yet they did not find it necessary to notify me of this, farewell one can only take so such cow dung. Orange is beyond repair, period, can someone give me the URL to safaricoms domain registration page Regards PS. Hi Robert, Thank you for a very well outlined vision. How I wish the appointing authority would give you an opportunity. Meanwhile,I choose to strongly disagree with Bwana PS in regard to the legacy issues he raised. Yawe's vision is comprised of income generating ideas e.g.Renting out banking hall space, Advertising, Selling airtime etc,very minimal resources are required and if anything the organisation would be assured of immediate returns.From the vision I also see numerous job opportunities being created through Ecomerce and the eventual door delivery of mail. Listers, I draw inspiration from how Hon Michuki transformed the public transport sector. He used the same staff his predecessors had used,no retraining,no retrenchment or work force overhaul;just a man who decided to bring sanity on the roads and sanity he brought. Similarly,it also took one man,same task force,same conditions,to undo all what had been done by Hon Michuki at Ministry of Transport. Again Hon Michuki moved to Min of Enviroment,we could have heard excuses of how much resources were needed to clean Nairobi river........................again the river got cleaned. Personally I believe its all dependent on the person at the top. Under our current situation I dont expect Yawe to immediately replace Maj Gen Hussein Ali but the least I would have expected is in the meantime Yawe be introduced to the Post Master General to share on how some of his ideas can be implemented as we wait for the resource and legacy issues to get resolved. Francis, You are correct, the IDC statistics might give a better picture if they reflected broadband adoption for households to include families who may be sharing a connection as well as broadband on mobile devices using my nephew as an example -- he is on Facebook 24/7 using his mobile these days, and I am not sure at what speeds. Is there a standard definition of "broadband penetration" in the industry? Where's the best value for money for broadband<http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/broadband>? South Korea? The UK? No - it turns out to be Hong Kong, according to a study by the broadband consultancy Point Topic. The data, which is collected on a quarterly basis by the company, showcases the best deals on offer to consumers around the world. "Consumers in different countries are faced with very different broadband tariffs, dependent on geography, market and network maturity, local competition and various levels and sources of subsidy," said Fiona Vanier, senior analyst at Point Topic. The map<http://www.openheatmap.com/view.html?map=ProprietorVideoedBlockbuster> above shows an adjusted measure of the cost - specifically, the logarithm of the cost, subtracted from the largest value of cost. This means that larger numbers actually match to lower, rather than higher prices: in Hong Kong the provider, HKBN, offers fibre to the home, with a 1Gbps connection, which costs the equivalent of $0.028 per megabit. The next in the top ten are Japan, Romania, Sweden, Latvia, China, Singapore, Russia, Germany and Finland. The UK finally appears at No.24, ahead of the US which is at No.30. In the standalone tariffs that Point Topic tracks, bandwidth can vary from 150kbps (which arguably isn't broadband, though it tends to be the continuous state of the connection rather than the speed that most focus on) up to 1Gbps. Many come with data limits, email addresses or static IPs, and that is before accounting for "special offers". To help comparison, Point Topic analysed the amount a consumer pays for a megabit of bandwidth, and analysed the cost over a year. "Nine of the ten best value tariffs are either pure fibre or hybrid offerings where fibre is a significant part of the local loop. The exception is Germany where Unity Media offer a cable service that is very competitive," said Vanier. "Prices are stabilising in many markets around the world and overall in the last quarter there was an average increase globally. However there are plenty of countries that are still rolling out new networks and ISPs that are announcing new tariffs. Even in relatively mature markets, like Singapore or Italy, there is room for improvement." Faster downstream speeds usually mean a lower price per megabit but the bandwidth has to be used for those savings to be achieved. "Bandwidth will continue to increase as fibre edges closer to the consumer. Higher speeds generally mean better value for the consumer. All that remains is to work out how best to use it," concluded Vanier. Unity of purpose

Comrades, The other day, the Americans decided they were going to put a man on the moon, not too long NASA was established for this prupose and President Kennedy went to visit. The entire staff were lined and he asked eveyone what their purpose was, one answer kept echoing and then he got to the cleaner and his answer was, "am also helping to put a man on the moon". This episode ranks very high in the school of "unity of purpose" and i beckon us to that high calling. We have an opportunity to put a man (woman) on the ICANN board again, we have done it before so may i submit that we unit around this common purpose and ensure that we dont major on the minors and minor on the majors. Automated Milk Weighing System

Hi. India has had an automated milk weighing system that not only weighs but checks the milk for fat content and processes payments (in some cases on the spot) so that farmers have no doubt what their milk is worth and when they'll get paid. I haven't heard of anything similar here and wondered if this would work here and probably also be adopted for other agricultural goods, especially maize. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN, Dear Sir/Madam, In the wake of current developments and without prejudice, i present my testimony of Mr. Peirre Dandjinou - an "unusual" leader of our time. i first encountered Peirre Dandjinou at an AfNOG/AfriNIC meeting in the turn of the 21st century and he made time to engage on ideas to grow the Internet in Africa, we have since being engaged at the level of ideas and doing things for Africa. Mr. Dandjinou cuts across on language lines, very fluent in english and french, am sure in other languages that am not aware of. His disposition is soo African, it took me a while to realise he is of Beninou extraction. Worked in the UN System as a diplomat and at the same time engaged with the African private sector, he has a unique ability to balance the interest of governments, civil society, academia and private sector - an unusual leadership skill. Interestingly, he has such a quite and inclusive nature that he can do all the ground work for a meeting and during the event, he wont say a word and at the end, he would say, WE had a great meeting, now lets get to action. He is one of those leaders, who leader from behind by building community. Even when you disagree with him, he would find something that you both agree on and say, lets focus on that. He is the "unseen" leader in the building of the Af* institutions namely AfNOG, AfriNIC, AfrISPA, AfriCANN, AfTLD, AfRALO, AfFREN and now AfCERT. I must put on record that when we were establishing AfrISPA, he was one of the quiet advisors who would tell you what to do and when to say what and what not to do or say. When there is geat controversy and someone is discounted, Peirre would echo "atleast lets hear his or her side of the story" and conclude "whether we like it or not, he or she is part of the African story". Am sure if a court of competent jurisdiction sentenced someone to death without giving them a hearing, Peirre would still echo "lets hear his or her side of the story" - it takes great patience and an unusual substance for humanity to have that nature. The ICANN Community of which am a peripheral participant stands to benefit greatly from such an "unusual" leader and i submit that any institution that takes Peirre Dandjinou unto it's board would be greatly enhanced by an "unusual leader". Admittedly the same DCA prevented the Africa numbers registry from teaching Ethiopians because of one person's .africa interest in a string that is community owned. This also shows severe weakness in African governments whose officers got easily manipulated and thus denied themselves technical education which DCA cannot provide, deepening the divide on the continent. This may be a warning to the ICANN and AfrICANN community in that this was also the same person who mounted an earlier smear campaign against an ICANN officer on guess what, same .africa and to Ombudsman. This shows a pattern of setting up ICANN for disrepute. In this particular case it is also setting ICANN in a collision course with the 53 member Union AUC. Remember 3 strikes and you are out. It is two strikes now These things happening around current higthened global Internet governance discussions poisons the atmosphere for ICANN in some ways It is my hope that if any of the claims are found false remedy would be sought All this wahala is about a string .africa that some think can be their private property. I think its more responsible for the regional organization (AUC) to hold the string in public trust and have policy oversight, especially so with these likes of practices of DCA. The domain dotafrica.org was registered in 2004 as a community response to the 2002 proposal for .africa and connectdotafrica.org was registered in 2007. Who is copying who? 2007 Lisbon - DCA first heard of .africa at this meeting and could not be making a presentation. DCA copied the material from www.dotafrica.org and received source material from one of the contributors. This is a lie. I was the scribe and know the documents were plagiarized by DCA which is an offense. Note point above same as above DCA does not participate in the community DCA is clueless as Africann list has not blocked any postings. This is another lie exposing her since she likes to block or manipulate. The truest example is mixing Afrinic training workshop with DCA as an Ethiopian business that is being prevented by AfriNIC from having .africa. Whew;-[ The concept paper is the one that DCA plagiarized; its a fact so it should be stated. This is dishonest DCA was rather rejected by the community which rejected her aggression at a respected local participant. Mobile Campaign to Vote for Kenyan Innovator

Listers and CEOs of all Mobile Companies in Kenya, We need to take pride in our "own" and promote INNOVATION by young Kenyans. I would like to appeal to ALL mobile operators in Kenya to launch a campaign via mobile to get millions of Kenyans to vote for Evans. I think we have enought techy innovators within the mobile companies to make this happen! Lets see which moble operator will take up the challenge and lead from the front! His desire to provide sustainable energy to communities was hatched while studying Electrical Engineering at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. As he fiddled with an experiment involving the timing of Christmas lights the idea to provide an environmentally friendly light source for rural homes struck him. Today, Evans Wadongo’s initiative, which involves supplying solar-powered lanterns at no cost, has transformed the lives of thousands of rural families who have no access to electricity and live below the poverty line. He has received 200 supply requests from countries interested in his lanterns. “We plan on opening an office in Lagos Nigeria, Sudan, Uganda and the US to meet the growing demands.” Coming from a poor family of four children, he relied on a kerosene lamp to study at night. At some point he develop poor eyesight because of smoke from the kerosene lamp. Wadongo, the only African in the finals for the 2010 Cable News Network (CNN) Hero Awards, will be travelling to the United States on November 15 to represent Kenya at the awards ceremony in Hollywood. The award, which attracted over 10,000 contestants form all over the world, is given to young persons with innovative projects geared towards eliminating poverty and creating sustained social development in local communities. The 24-year-old will be relying on votes from Kenyans to clinch the coveted award come the finals to be aired on CNN live on November 25. Voting is still under way on heroes.cnn.com/vote.aspx<http://heroes.cnn.com/vote.aspx> and is expected to close on November 18. If he gets voted as the finalist he stands to bring home $100,000 (about Sh8 million) which he says would be channelled towards financing production of more lanterns and other economic ventures his organisation supports. He says part of the cash will finance a project in Migori, Nyanza, that targets to transform the area into a virtual tower. “I plan to invest the money in setting up an ICT centre, a solar-powered fish processing plant and build more lanterns for distribution to needy homesteads in the country,” he said. In a media briefing held on Thursday organised by Brand Kenya Limited at NHIF building an upbeat Mr Wadongo urged Kenyans to vote for him at the same time exuded confidence of victory in the competition. During his visit, Wadongo is expected to hold meetings with top business leaders and tour several States and institutions of learning. “I intend to spend a month in the US and meet with business executives from Microsoft and Apple, hold media interviews and address students at Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology,” he said. His innovative programme dubbed ‘Use solar, save Lives’ produces lanterns at a cost Sh1,600. The production is funded by donors. The solar-powered lamp can light up a home for six hours if it is fully charged by being left in the sun during the day. The inventor says the life span for the lamp is between six and 10 years. Wadongo says he has designed a new lantern that has a radio and a slot for charging a mobile phone. This one is still in the test stage. Operating from his office in Nairobi’s South B area, which also hosts a workshop and employs eight permanent staff and over 10 volunteers each month, Wadongo estimates he has distributed 14,000 lanterns to rural communities across the country and hopes to hit 150,000 by 2015. His group buys excess pieces of solar panelling cut from commercially sold panels and collects scrap metal to make the lamps. Wadongo plans to train more youths to handle the large orders. Individual users will have the ability to archive or delete their *own* copies of transcripts, but it appears that there is explicitly *not* a functionality similar to Google's "off the record" chat feature, which permits users to declare that their conversations with given individuals should not be routinely preserved. "It just didn't make sense for us," were pretty much the words that Zuckerberg used in response to a question on this topic.
