Just been reading this article, http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/Corporate+News/Nation++Royal+Media+lose+…, and the print lacks the details but also a reflection is what is happening in developing countries. Did the local media group have the technical and financial capability to operate signal distribution platforms and roll out the services, yet got dropped out because of tender technicalities. How is this possible? Are we saying kenyans are totally incapable of understanding the requirements or commitments of such national projects? I hope the affected parties do an indepth review of why they lost out and share that information with kenyans. We need to know, because I'm sure the local media groups were also going to buy technology platforms and implement roll out so issues like delays due to internal manufacture or creation do not even arise. Some thoughts. Thank you.

iLabAfrica Presentations

Hi, I was fortunate enough to attend the iLabAfrica student presentation on Friday last week, it was a very refreshing experience and look forward to when they move to the incubation stage. Over the years I have been able to provide rudimentary incubation facilities to various organisations which have been able to graduate and gone off on their own which is a very rewarding experience. My recommendations to students is that they need to use the university environment to test their concepts just like was done with facebook and other similar startups. The university environment if more forgiving than the world outside, all that is required will be hosting facilities which already exist. After the concept has been tested at Strathmore they can increase the reach by going across to other universities, that statement just gave me a deja-vu moment (think facebook), a population of over 300,000 students which offered a very large market. All applications presented can be launched and run at the university, in addition the teams should look for ways to raise initial capital from the student body as a way to horn their negotiation skills. The University can actually run a stock exchange able to raise seed capital for the projects while also giving the students experience in alternative funding sources. It is none the less a commendable effort by Strathmore University and I look forward to seeing more such initiatives across all other Universities. I would like to shift the discussion if I may to what people can do with the data? What data is missing? how citizens are using it. What possible value additions we can have? Socrata.com is an online hosted service that enables data to be visualized to enable graphs and charts and data comparisons with ease. This visualization is what gives meaning to the data in a way that the common citizens can view it. The benefits of doing this quickly for launch and citizen access far outweigh the cost of waiting for the time it would have taken for us to develop a similar online application locally. One the same website we have published the same lists of data in their original formats. Indeed we have spoken to many software developers who have suggested that they can replicate this The data is there for anyone to replicate it on any website. What we have indicated to software developers is to take the plunge into imagining solutions that are based on have access to that data. This is where the greatest value is. The issue of local hosting has our attention and we will resolve it, not just with a local data centre, that is not the limitation, but the replication of a similar online tool to visualize the data. This campaign has to be about the benefits of open data. Knowledge, empowerment, commerce entrepreneurship, citizen participation. By crusading for, lobbying and obtaining data that was previously only in thick books, PS Dr Ndemo has broken ground for us. By launching this HE President Kibaki has demonstrated Kenya's commitment to citizen access. Once the entrepreneurs developers have a system that can replicate or even improve or add value to Socrata, or even improve on Socrata and Google's public data tools, the hosting decisions will be easy. As an implementing agency, we are committed to working with all to make this happen. There is much to be done. Dear listers Today I went to visit my relas in Central. I kept my eye on the roads to scope out the route for digital villages. I hired my driver, who is from Central, because I do not have a car. I paid him 5000 for his time, and 4000 for gas, which I frankly, think is reasonable. We traveled 330 km. We traveled from 8:30 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. (I think that is too long. Thika road is dangerous at night). We did the whole loop. Juja, thika, sagana, karatina, nyeri, othaya, kira-ini, saba saba, thika, juja. * It would bring costs down if someone who is from central would be willing to drive their car, and we all paid the gas*. That being said, there was a lot of road carnage, so I was happy to be with a professional driver. *Re Safaricom centers in central *that are in good shape we have 1) Jomtech cyber; othaya constituency, nyeri sagana road, *On R*oad 2) Mac farm products, kiraini town opp police station,* On Road* *Re ICT Board Pasha,* we have 1) Muranga; Maragua, Maragua, but not idea where that is on this road. 2) Kiambu, Juja, Ruiru, *on the road *3) Kiambu, Gatundu North, Gatukuyu *No idea if on the road. * *Re Safaricom centers that are not up to snuff *we have many-- 1) Nyeri town constituency 2) juja efast cyber cafe 3) integral communications, juja town, juja, 4) realtech cyber, thika, juja; 5) sam and hen2 saba saba juja; 6) Tonnes cyber cafe, karatina, nyeri town constituency, Please let me know *are you willing to drive your car, if we cover the gas*? Dear colleagues I had a lovely time at the IGF yesterday. Several people, including PS Ndemo and others, wanted an update on the digital villages project. Yesterday, Victor Gathara and I met with some Safaricom digital village representatives. Transcript will follow. But, just quickly, we will be visiting the *second week of August. *You are welcome to come along. Gas money is welcome. *Tentative *itineraries include the following Day one: Juja, Thika, Saba Saba, Karatina. Hi, I was driving through Langata area when I found what looked like a "new" post office. Having been brought up in Nairobi it was interesting to note that Buru Buru, Umoja and even Nairobi West do not have post offices yet they where built earlier than Langata. This is a clear indication that there is still great potential for PCK even in Nairobi especially know that many formally residential only areas are developing large populations of commercial activities. Sometimes selfishness is essential to development, the building where the post office is situated is likely to belong to a politically correct person. Now if only all the members of parliament insisted on a post office in their constituency and every councillor in their ward that would give PCK an additional 3000 outlets, if these post offices offer the council services such as license applications, council schools applications, rates payments and health certificates we will have achieved total devolvement. I'm no economist but would like to share some amatuer comments here. Corrections are very welcome. :-) Given the right circumstances, we are destined to become even more bigger players in the region. We are also far capable of doing much more than we give ourself credits for, BUT, unfortunately we are stuck. Unable to move to the next level. I believe one reason that we cannot move ahead is the "shoppers" mentality that is holding many back from thinking what we need to do. I also honestly believe we need new people or injection of fresh ideas with goals commitments in govt that will be the core of what happens to the development of the nation. I write from a technology point of view and know we are literally shooting ourselves in both legs. We cannot fix the mistakes of the past hundreds of years as the older generations stood by and watched the first trains rollout across the land. These generations were mere bystanders on a free ride and could only match thinking that lacked visions and goals. How fast are things really moving? I can say that we are unable to keep up the pace, even in our technology fields. I listed the Mara Online project just as one, literally there are hundreds of such projects that have a National and International impact waiting to be done. It's also a shame we are bent of creating more and more end users in the economy. When we think of Southern Sudan as investments, we immediately think of what we can* buy to supply*-not anything beyond this-- yet we are regional leaders. The current economic practises must go and we need to match the growth with a balance of imports and local creations. Why is it that the pace of say e.g. e-Govt is extremely slow and only happens when it receives donor or world bank funding or external partners? Why is it that we have not created a better voting system or e-monitoring facilities to remove the system problems we are already aware of? If we think 2010 was when we implemented video in judiciary, then it seems we are in a bigger self denial in a global sense because the technology has existed since the 1980s and kept getting better over time. Things need to change, the system needs to change and also people's thinking needs to change. We need a balance if we are to go to the next level. I write from a technology point of view but am certain other sectors too will have similar views. Thank you.

Why do we lack the initiatives to bring this natural wonder to the Internet and gain even more exposure, localise traffic? It's amazing that we have one of the greatest animal migration wonders happening right here in kenya each year, yet not many are aware of the event nor will be able to attend. The animal migration is an odd event, because you have thousands of animals that buildup along the banks of the mara river, at random places. And they also start crossing at random times, as if they recieve a mass communication message at the oddest times and an event that can only be captured if one has knowledge of the area. The closest place that could host a webcam is mara serena which is overlooking a crossing point. Both Safaricom and Airtel have edge coverage in the area, which could be used to provide frame by frame coverage. We don't want people to watch live as they should come to kenya and watch for themselves but we want to also create a live interest. How can we get Hotels, Lodges to co-operate under one "kenya live" system and who pays for the data rates and equipment costs? We would be very capable of building a central streaming system that would capture live images across the country at various tourist locations from western kenyan to the coast. Back in december, I drove down the road towards Magadi and Corner Baridi/OlePolos had some of the best views that Kenya offers. It's amazing the judiciary is now using live video in 2011 and many were impressed, yet many of us were exposed to such video based systems and designs probably 15 or more years ago so it really is quite easy. Let's think of adding some great technology value that could bridge awareness to an important natural event, a step towards creation of national ip traffic which has export value. Additional ideas on what sectors can create more ip traffic and interest, comments or suggestions are very welcome. Thank you.

Fibre Optic Cable cuts

Hi, I was walking along the road near the Kilimani Police Station when I came across openly visible fibre optic ducting laid next to water pipes. Please note that I did not excavate so as to get an issue to raise has you might be thinking. For those who visit the wananchi areas of the city you will be aware that the water supply in those areas is supplied using PVC pipes. From the attached picture I would not be surprised if the fibre cable running inside this ducting is damaged after being mistaken for a water pipe. We are becoming more and more dependent on data connectivity with this kind of shoddy installation can we really entrust our livelihood to such organisations who cut corners then blame the government and competitors when the cable is damaged? I want especially to thank Marilyn Cade for her work in pulling together the third edition of this meeting and I am glad to have had the opportunity to speak at each of these sessions. We are at a critical time in the history of the Internet. Last month I spoke at the Internet Society's INET meeting in New York City where the question before the house was "What kind of Internet do I want?" I answered that I wanted an Internet that is open, innovative, growing and global and that continues to rely on the established global Internet institutions for guidance and direction. But in the last year we have seen more and more instances of restrictions on the free flow of information online, disputes between various standards bodies and even appeals from incumbent carriers in Europe for government intervention on the terms and conditions for exchanging Internet traffic. We have seen statements by international organizations and even some governments to regulate the Internet more directly. All of these events only strengthen my view that now is truly a time for all to get involved who are concerned about maintaining a vibrant and growing Internet and who want to preserve established global Internet institutions. When we speak of global Internet institutions, we are referring to multistakeholder organizations, like the Internet Society, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), that have played a major role in the design and operation of the Internet. A top priority of the Obama Administration, and in particular, NTIA, is to preserve and enhance the multistakeholder model that has been a hallmark feature of the global Internet institutions that have been responsible for the success of the Internet. Maintaining the openness, transparency, and user choice of today's Internet can only be sustained and advanced in a world where all stakeholders participate in relevant decision making, not one where governments, or other stakeholders, dominate. We believe that preserving our existing institutions while extending this model to other aspects of Internet policymaking is important for ensuring the continued growth and innovation of the Internet. Today, I would like to discuss some recent events where we have made substantial progress on our goal to protect and enhance the multistakeholder process for Internet governance. First, many of you know that I have devoted a lot of time in speeches to the accountability and transparency of ICANN, the multistakeholder organization that coordinates the Domain Name System for the Internet. Starting last year, as one of its commitments to the global Internet community set forth in the Affirmation of Commitments, ICANN undertook a detailed review of its accountability and transparency. I had the privilege of participating on the team that conducted this review. It was truly multistakeholder, with members from around the globe including China, Egypt, and South America, representing elements of the global Internet community such as registries, registrars, users, and governments. The team completed its review last December and issued a report with 27 recommendations to the ICANN Board for improving accountability and transparency at ICANN. A little more than three weeks ago, at its meeting in Singapore, the ICANN Board adopted these recommendations as proposed by the review team. I am very pleased by the Board's action, which demonstrates a commitment to improving the accountability and transparency of ICANN and to the multistakeholder process of Internet policymaking. Now the focus turns to ICANN management and staff, who must take up the challenge of implementing these recommendations as rapidly as possible and in a manner that leads to meaningful and lasting reform. These recommendations, when implemented in a thorough and meaningful way, will measurably improve the accountability and transparency of the organization. And while a lot of people worked very hard to get to this point with ICANN, I think the success of the effort so far illustrates an important point about multistakeholder organizations. Multistakeholder institutions derive their legitimacy from the support and active participation of all stakeholders. Accordingly, they are more likely than regulatory or treaty-based organizations to adapt to change and evolve when the stakeholders demand it. It is difficult to imagine employing a similar process to reform more traditional regulatory agencies as quickly or as thoroughly. The other big news in Singapore was ICANN's decision to move forward to expand the number of generic top level domains, or gTLDs. While that decision may not have satisfied everyone, the process used by the Board to reach its decision is worthy of note. In response to long-standing concerns held by governments about the expansion proposal, the ICANN Board held a number of focused exchanges with the Government Advisory Committee to resolve as many of the issues as possible. These exchanges represented the first meaningful interactions between the GAC and the ICANN Board since ICANN's inception and it is critical that the lessons learned through these recent interactions result in clear, predictable processes for the ICANN Board and the GAC going forward. ** From our perspective, ICANN improved the new gTLD program by incorporating a significant number of the GAC proposals. The fact that not all of the GAC's proposals were adopted does not represent a failure of the process or a setback to governments; rather, it reflects the reality of a multistakeholder model.**More important is the fact that the ICANN Board now recognizes the need to bring governments into its multistakeholder policymaking in a more meaningful way. If we are to combat the proposals put forward by others, such as to grant the International Telecommunication Union the authority to veto ICANN Board decisions, we need to ensure that our multistakeholder institutions have provided a meaningful role for governments as stakeholders. A second major achievement of the last month was the action taken by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris at the end of June to adopt a set of Internet policymaking principles.** The occasion was the OECD's High Level Meeting on the Internet Economy for senior decision-makers from governments, the private sector, civil society, and the technical community and it was an unprecedented opportunity to advance the global consensus around the working multistakeholder model that we believe is critical to the Internet's continued success. Participants at the meeting agreed to a communiqué on policy-making principles that will create the conditions for an open, interoperable, secure, and continually innovating Internet. The communiqué reflects a growing global consensus on the value of the multistakeholder approach towards addressing Internet challenges. The principles are not intended to harmonize global law, but rather provide a common framework for companies and governments as they consider Internet policy issues. The OECD member nations endorsed the policymaking principles as did the business and technical advisory committees. The civil society advisory committee could not endorse the entire document due to its concern with provisions relating to online protection of intellectual property. However, everyone supported the plank encouraging multistakeholder cooperation in policy development processes. So, with these actions in Singapore and Paris, where do we go next? What is the call to action for all of you? First and foremost, do not take the OECD principles as the end of the work. Really, we are just at the beginning. Reaching an agreement on the OECD language was a challenge, but our history with those member states and ideological similarities gave us confidence that we would eventually reach consensus. However, some other nations, many with less experience with the multistakeholder model, may be inclined instead to support treaty-based structures for Internet governance. It is our job to advocate for this model and highlight how this multistakeholder process protects their national interests. The United States is most assuredly opposed to establishing a governance structure for the Internet that would be managed and controlled by nation-states. Such a structure could lead to the imposition of heavy-handed and economically misguided regulation and the loss of flexibility the current system allows today, all of which would jeopardize the growth and innovation we have enjoyed these past years. The OECD's policymaking principles are perhaps the clearest statement yet that the United States and like-minded nations oppose treaty-binding regulation of the Internet. Now our challenge is to convince the rest of the world of the advantages of the multistakeholder approach. Next November, the United States will participate in the ITU's World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT). This treaty negotiation will conduct a review of the International Telecommunication Regulations (ITRs), the general principles which relate to the provision and operation of international telecommunication services. We can expect that some states will attempt to rewrite the ITRs in a manner that would establish heavy-handed governmental control of the Internet and cybersecurity. These are the countries that we, including all of us in this room, must reach to promote the multistakeholder model, and our work must begin right away. The IGF in Nairobi will provide us all with an excellent opportunity to get started on this important task. I will use speaking opportunities at the IGF and the Government of Kenya's Ministerial meeting to explain why we feel multistakeholder Internet governance is so valuable to preserving and enhancing a dynamic Internet and how it can be most useful in countries with little tradition of employing it. My team at NTIA will also work extensively at the bilateral level over the next year to spread the message. We ultimately hope to attain a global consensus on Internet governance that will preserve an open, interoperable, secure, and continually innovating Internet. But we need your help. Before I close, I would like to remind everyone of the July 29th deadline for responses to NTIA's Further Notice of Inquiry on the IANA functions contract. This process is the first comprehensive review of the IANA functions contract since the award of the initial contract in 2000. We have been conducting what I hope the community agrees is an open and transparent process on the contract. Based on comments received to our original notice, we have gone back to the global community to confirm that we interpreted correctly what was said in the comments. We set forth our tentative conclusions in response to the comments and then provided a draft Statement of Work for public comment. This is the first time NTIA has sought public input on the draft Statement of Work. In keeping with our commitment to the multistakeholder model, NTIA is actively seeking the input of global stakeholders. I encourage you to all carefully read the Further Notice and submit comments by the deadline. Friends, Sincere thanks for the compliments. However, there wasn't really any magic: we simply happened to be in the right places at the right time. Thanks to history! Nonetheless, for those of us who might not have been there at the time Kenya acquired its code: could there be any in our midst who knows "why 254"? I know it is NOT the prerogative of a country to choose a code. But in the same vein, I am aware it is not prohibited for countries to request. Word has it "292" had been earmarked for us (after Eritrea - "291")! On receiving this information, a Ugandan friend remarked: "You mean such 'pretty' numbers existed ........ better TZ's '255'"! No wonder US/North America 'picked' "1", and Great Britain "44"! Can someone enlighten me why "254"? Thanks too to those inquiring about the ccTLD (Internet Domain). I can only say: "Coming Soon". MPESA mess up

Dear colleagues I had a really bad experience with MPESA tonight. Not sure if the problem was the dealer, or Safaricom in general. I was at Fone Directs, at Yaya Center, on the ground floor. My goal was to register my phone with MPESA, and send 1000 shillings to my sister in Nyeri. Let me start with three big constructive suggestions, and then I will tell my story. 1) If a client stands patiently in line for over 30 minutes without making noise, and without complaining, please serve her first, and resolve her concern, before you deal with the people standing behind her. Safaricom/Fone Direct, please train your employees in customer service. 2) If you are in the customer service industry, your job is to resolve the problem, and complete the transaction, if at all possible. It is not helpful to tell the client that "I have finished my part of the transaction. The rest of it must be dealt with by customer care.": In my business, safaris, my job is to make the client happy, not to "finish my part of the transaction." Safaricom, please do a better job of training your employees. 3) Fone Direct, *please* get a second person to handle MPESA activity at your Yaya branch. I was trapped in your store for over an hour and the entire time, the line snaked out the door. It is a simple principle of qeueing theory and operations research that having more lines prevents traffic jams. Hence, Nakumatt has several lines for customer checkout. Unaelewa? FYI, the workers told me that they have asked several times for a second person, and that management has not acted. Not fair to customers, and not fair to workers. Okay, there you go on the constructive advice. Now, for the story. I arrived at Fone Directs at Yaya at 4:00 p.m today. I had a simple transaction in mind. Register my phone for MPESA, and send my sister 1000 shillings. Simple, right? I had my passport, and I had my phone. I have never had an MPESA account before. I stood in line quietly and patiently for 40 minutes. I did not complain, and I did not berate the girl at the counter. I just waited my turn in line. This is because I went to Kindergarten in the US. We take standing in line very seriously in the US. Cutting in line is a hanging offense. When I got to the head of the line, I asked the girl to set up an MPESA account for me. Her name was ANN. ANN at Fone Direct. *To her credit, she remained calm throughout*. She took my passport, and tried to set up my account, but when we attempted to enter the code that MPESA sent, the Safaricom system would not accept it. We tried a few times to no avail. At that point, Ann told me I had to call customer care. I told her "no, I am in a big Safaricom store. This is your job. Please do it. You call customer care." She did call customer care. At that point, she began handling the transactions of the people behind me. This got on my nerves, because I had waited patiently behind 5 people, and not tried to get my transaction handled ahead of people who are ahead of me. This is simply bad manners on the part of both the people in line, and the customer service agent. I complained, but I can see the situation from her perspective.She was in a bad situation, with a line snaking out the door. *Management, get this girl some help. * She did call customer care, and they tried to work on the situation. At that point, they said they would send me an MPESA menu. I waited for twenty minutes, while Ann continued to serve the people behind me. After twenty minutes, (It was 4:55 at this point) I asked her what was going on. She said that we were waiting for the menu. She then said, "I have completed my part of the transaction, I am only waiting on customer care. The rest of this is their job." I told her that her job is not to do her part of the transaction. Her job is to serve her customer, so why did she not call customer care? I also told her that I am in the industry, and that I suggest she serve me, since it was my turn. She did that, and lo and behold, they sent the menu right away!!! Amazing! After I complained three times, they did their job promptly! So at 5:15, after an hour and a quarter of waiting, and a lot of negotiating with the staff to get them to fulfil their duties, Ann was able to assist me to send my 1000 shillings. I told her I would ask for help for her. Hence, I am writing this email. Thoughts? Other than I am very kali? Yours, Rigia

We (clients) were denied entry to a Wananchi Online tech support office -- after being referred their by their own sales staff. For over 3 months have been asking Wananchi Online to help resolve a complicated situation at my location. Planning Digital Villages Visit

Dear colleagues. I now have a list of Safaricom villages and also Pasha villages. Safaricom has asked me as a courtesy to meet with them before I venture out. So I will do that. I have a conference I have to attend in Nairobi from July 25th until August 6th. I would like to take the second week of August to go visit as many villages as I can afford to. Does anyone have a preference regarding visiting Safaricom or Pasha? I guess that in theory, we could visit both in the same county. I have heard from two people who are seriously interested in coming with me. If it is only two, I will just rent a car, not a safari van. Again, it would be helpful, if you could pitch in 500 shillings for the gas, but it is not required. I know that the economy is tight right now. --For those involved in the end user data creation creativity, please ignore this thread as the system is operational therefore this thread does not affect you-- If KICBT could respond, it would be help establish some parameters of this project. As a matter of national interest to all Kenyan Software Developer Companies, Telcos, ISPs and Data Centre Operators, please provide the requirements. The project also seems a very interesting study for the University Level Students in Computer Sciences. These are some of the basic questions I can think of: 1) How is the Data captured at local level i.e Is it a manual or automated process? 2) Is the data a push type or pull type of sevice? 3) What data formats does the Govt data provide? 4) What are the data visualization requirements? 5) Is each Ministry provided a module or template that allows for uniform data collections? 6) What were the bandwidth, system location, electricity, security, system security and redundancy requirements for a public hosted system? 7) How is the data integrity and accuracy ensured or what check mechanisms ensure data reliability? 8) What are the financial performances required to fulfill the project continuty? 9) In keeping with the large display Mobile and the 7inch screen devices ( such as iPad and the rest ), what requirements are placed on the core system? *Listers* * * * * *The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Information of Communications will launch a new Government Open Data Portal on July 8, 2011 at the KICC that will, for the first time, make several large government datasets available to the general public in an easy to search and view format.* The launch will be presided over by HE President Mwai Kibaki . Hi Paul, The government data centre is at tender stage as we think which indicates that we shall not be bringing the data home for at least 3 years. Does't this indicate a failure in the KICT Board that we do not have a data centre of international standards? I noted someone indicate that hosting is being done in the US because there is better hosting facilities a situation that was the responsibility of the board to remedy. Local Governments Motivate App Developers With Contests Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 04:42 PM | Sarah Kessler The past two years, New York City has hosted contests for mobile apps that use city data. Now New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is launching a similar contest of its own. A number of cities, including Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, have made their data publicly available. It makes sense: Apps that improve parking situations or make public transportation easier to navigate benefit the city without sucking its resources. But New York City, and now New York State, are some of the first governments to add a contest to the process in order to incentivize developers to make such apps. To be eligible for “MTA App Quest” and its $15,000 in cash prizes, the biggest requirement is that apps need to use at least one of the MTA’s data sets. The MTA first posted databases online for developer use in January 2010, and 40 or so apps have been created using the data. But many of these, like NYC Way [iTunes link], were entries in New York City’s BigApps contest, which borrowed several MTA databases. For its own contest, the MTA has released six new or updated data sets, including one that shows where platforms, elevators, turnstiles and station agent booths are located inside subway stations. Beyond that, the two contests are pretty similar, despite one being run by the city and the other by the state. The MTA has partnered with the same contest platform that NYC did, ChallengePost. In this case, ChallengePost is putting up the prize money for the contest. Usually, it collects money to run crowdsourcing contests for clients like the World Bank and Michelle Obama. ChallengePost CEO Brandon Kessler says that NYC was the first city to use a contest on his platform for an open data app contest. Now that New York State has also caught on to the publicity method, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not the last. Hi, Question, for those who have run tech startups, how do you deal with excessive revenue? Given that tech firms many times operate on high margins, let's, for the sake of example, say you have a product that, with an expense book of roughly 1M (Rent + Salaries), and your monthly revenue is 8 M KES. What do you do with the remaining 7M? Some say invest in product development but even then, you will still have quite an amount of change. What happens to that change? Invested in a bank? Or in some form of Fixed Income Securities (Bonds, T-Bills etc). Thank you Sam Gatere for your insightfull responses, it is unfortunate that majority of us have resorted to complaining through lists or the media when systems go live, for instance, when opendata.go.ke was launched there are those who questioned whether the data is hosted outside the country and why that decision was taken, i am not sure whom to side with in so far as the issue is concerned because the arguments for and against could all be genuine, my only concern is even as the government embarks on such noble projects which are inline with Vision 2030, are there Frameworks (principles) that will ensure that there is more emphasis on the use of local networks for data interchange to minimise dependence on Foreign carriers which might translate to Capital flight? that there is adequate Capacity to host data (especially government data locally...i would be very uncomfortable to host government data outside our borders whether in a cloud or not :-) just hoping that is not the case, how do we promote our ccTLD, najivunia kuwa .ke? , the question is who should take part and what should be their input? the discussion contninues.. INVITATION TO 2011 KENYA IGF

Dear Listers, The Kenya Network Information Centre (KENIC), the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) and other participating organisations wish to invite you to the 2011 Kenya IGF to be held at the Panafric hotel in Nairobi on Friday 22nd, July 2010 from 7.00 am to 1:00 pm. The 2011 Kenya IGF is a follow up to the 2010 national IGF and the regional East Africa Internet Governance Forum 2010. The national and the regional forums aim at creating awareness,instituting a consensus building process to develop a common understanding of local IG issues as well as building capacity to enable meaningful participation in global Internet policy, governance and development processes and initiatives. The Kenya IGF will therefore provide Kenyan Internet stakeholders with an opportunity to increase their understanding of Internet governance issues and the links with socio-economic, political and cultural development and strengthen the internet governance community of practice evolving in the East Africa region. As Kenya will be hosting the 2011 global United Nations Internet Governance Forum (UN-IGF) the Kenya and EA forums will support the goals of the UN-IGF and the continued evolution of the open, multi-stakeholder internet. The outcomes of the K-IGF will be submitted and presented at the 2011 East Africa Internet Governance Forum (EA-IGF 2011) to be held in Kigali, Rwanda in August and subsequently to the global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) meeting to be held in Nairobi ,Kenya, from 27-30 September 2011. See attached, interesting development in the U.S. on online piracy. Leaders from the movie, television, music and Internet Service provider communities in the U.S. announced a landmark agreement on a common framework for "Copyright Alerts" - a state-of-the art system similar to the credit card fraud alerts - that will educate and notify Internet subscribers when their Internet service accounts are possibly being misused for online content theft. In our view, this is a reasonable and balanced approach that addresses the problem, by providing standards for copyright owners and Internet service providers, while respecting the privacy and rights of our subscribers. best Alice
