Mason explains that today 1 in 3 adults carry a cellphone in Kenya; in the past 5 years the number of mobiles in Kenya has grown from 1 million to 6.5 million. In contrast, the number of landlines remains at about 300,000, mostly in government offices. "About 80% of Kenyans are covered by mobile networks and while it would be easy to find a place off the network, finding people there would be difficult." While conceding the country needed to protect itself against terrorism, opposition members said they feared the bill would pave the way for President Mugabes government to curtail freedom of speech and breach privacy. The Interception of Communications bill sailed through the lower house without amendments and will now be sent to the upper house, where it is expected to face little opposition. Hi, Actually, the Kenyan minister's speech was on the treasury website www.treasury.go.ke within an hour of his delivering it. I think the problem is that the Kenya National Assembly's web site is poorly served. We have lots to learn from Tanzania's and Uganda's parliaments. Kenya's national assembly does not even have an up to date order paper on the web site, whereas you will get loads of information on Tanzania's bunge website, up to date info, bills going backing 10 years and more. Koch Fm needs a generator It is not every day that Kenyan journalists commit their money to the community but Nganga Mbugua had a noble idea- to contribute towards Koch Fms acquisition of a generator. Mbugua, a journalist with the Nation wanted had learnt that Koch Fm was fundraising to buy a generator and wanted to contribute to the cause. So he sent sms to all his friends. He asked for whatever they had, shs 100, 500, 1,000 or 10,000. Now, Koch Fm has a generator but has no money to install it. They got estimate costs of about shs 120,000. KICTANet members have been invited to pledge their contribution towards this worthy cause. Whether monetary or in kind, all are welcome to contribute. We are drawing a list of those interested in contributing. Andrew Limo was the first to pledge. Please add your name to this list.
