The reality of Mobile Money interoperability is finally here

Listers Interesting development. The Telco sector with policy push from MOICT is finally testing interoperability of Mobile Money across Networks. This is a step in the right direction. This list has long advocated for this. It is gratifying to see that this is happening now. Kudos to MOICT and CS Mucheru for pushing this through. Kudos to the telcos for making it happen. I'm however curious as to the headline of the story:- Mobile Money deal spells doom to M-Pesa <https://businesstoday.co.ke/mobile-money-deal-spells-doom-m-pesa/> Interoperability may very well cement and increase M-Pesa's dominance in the space. This battle is not going to be won on the promise of withdrawing and sending money. Increasingly people want convenience beyond cash-outs and peer to peer transfers. The players who will win are those who understand and execute the following:- 1. Super Focus on the customer 2. A one stop shop Virtual Bank - Payments, deposits, savings etc. 3. Brand Equity built on the principle that the customer ALWAYS comes first. My sense is that the interoperability 'promise' for laggard brands will go the way of the Number Porting Promise. There is no short cut to succeeding in business and serving your customer with excellence. For those expecting the government to help them vanquish their business rivals they have a long way to wait.. The winner here is the customer. The price for the telcos and other mobile money service provider is that you now have a level playing field.. Ali and Listers, I think a lot of us are underestimating the changes that have come with Mobile Money. Imagine banks just in Africa taking the cue from Pesalink. It seems that mobile operators have been "chilling" and not innovating further but just growing their markets. Telcos being pushed to make Mobile Money interoperable is to slow down the banks and Fintech companies. Visa na MasterCard are muscling into mobile payments, Android Pay and Google Wallet are now Google Pay. I wrote an article about this after talking to some people and looking at how the next phase will be customer experience innovation. A cyber crime in 2018? *...Many courts had no internet connections, reliable electricity, or even computers.* https://successfulsocieties.princeton.edu/publications/transforming-courts-… Summarized @ http://foreignpolicy.com/2016/07/09/how-kenya-cleaned-up- its-courts/ *...Many courts had no internet connections, reliable electricity, or even computers.* And because courts varied in their processes, it was impossible to develop a single nationwide system without first standardizing procedures. “We started encouraging [court] stations to develop their own local solutions,” said Ngugi, but “this didn’t solve one of our major problems, which was having [centralized] access to data.” In January 2013, the judiciary’s performance management committee began to develop a tracking tool to gather the information necessary to evaluate job performance, which collected much of the same data an electronic case management system would have. After almost three years of testing, the new tool — a simple Excel spreadsheet with drop-down menus customized for each court’s procedures, known as the Daily Court Returns Template — was rolled out in October 2015. At the end of the day, an administrative officer at each station would update the spreadsheet and send a copy to the central directorate that monitored performance, sometimes from an Internet cafe if the court lacked a reliable Internet connection. The template allowed the directorate to track case assignments and processing times and facilitated distribution of caseloads. However, the tool did not allow document sharing, and it was difficult to verify the data that court stations submitted. Mutunga understood that greater public engagement was essential to making reform work, and to this end he established an ombudsman’s office in downtown Nairobi to collect and resolve citizen complaints. Ideally, citizens would be able to bring their complaints to the office, call, send text messages, letters, or emails. Staff logged complaints and set deadlines for a response in a database used by liaison officers at each court station. After receiving an alert from the database, liaison officers had to resolve the problem or provide an explanation within the allotted time. Inadequate responses or patterns of complaints could be grounds for disciplinary action against judges and administrative staff. However, getting citizens to use the resource was a challenge. Kennedy Bidali, the first ombudsman, believed his team received only a fraction of the complaints they could have helped address. “We’ve tried the usual,” he said — from appearing on radio and television programs to distributing written materials and T-shirts — “but it’s not sufficient, and it’s not easy.”

Hello team, The Internet Governance Forum that took place at the United Nations in Geneva from the 18th to the 21st of December 2017 had the theme: ‘Shape Your Digital Future.’ Internet Society Youth Fellows saw the need to increase youth participation in Internet Governance Issues. Even though we are digital natives, young people are secluded from the decision making table on policies and issues affecting the internet that has shaped and continue to shape our daily lives. The Digital Grassroots Ambassador program is an initiative to accomplish the following goals: 1. Build a positive narrative on youth participation in Internet Governance 2. Engage youth in resolving internet relation problems at community level 3. Introduce youth to participation in Internet Governance through mentorship 4. Use Internet Literacy as a tool to accomplish Sustainable Developmental Goals The Digital Grassroots Ambassador program will include: 1. An Internet Literacy Coursework tailored to accomplish the SDGs 2. A community engagement activity that will be done by selected Ambassadors 3. Like many Kenyan’s who do not live near key installations served by dedicated power lines, having reliable power for both home and office use can be a game of chance. We have become accustomed to outages and brown outs from the lightest of rains and the odd monkey tinkering with and tripping some wires. Unfortunately, I have never once heard of restitution to a customer, resulting from downtime – scheduled or otherwise from the electricity transmission and distribution monopoly.
