You're right: with a champion everything is possible; without one nothing is. We hope we'll find one in the Rotary world... but even the finding of the champion takes time and energy! With our teambuilding centre. The DEPOT, we are making some headway through the CSR route, as a way of leveraging/replicating a proven approach. In your case you initiated Cura and then had a group from the Rotary and the community to move it forward. In the case of SGC we have had Dr. Eddah Gachukia leading a number of us - mainly "girls" that work on a pro bono basis. This group split into committees, takes responsibility for moving decisions on planning, fundraising, recruitment etc forward. Our experience is that Corporate bodies are willing to engage with such initiatives but prefer to take "chunks" that are aligned to their own stated CSR areas or core business If one takes this approach and as long as it is seen as genuine the corp. fraternity seems happy to engage. Dear Prof. Michieka, Attached is a summary of the comments emphasizing sustainable development priciples (ecological sustainability etc) as submitted to the Ministry of Information and Communication in relation to the Draft ICT Policy. It is part of the research we had earlier discussed. Your feedback and support for the principles advanced will be of value to the process. I agree and join FE in appreciating the occasional input from the PS. It gives us double benefit. One, it encourages us and assures us that our discussions shall (might?) eventually be incorporated in the National ICT policy and secondly, though quite broad it remains relevant and important...it makes us realise that indeed there is (might be?) some real change in government (after all). Hi Shem I have had a good look at the draft programme that we shared with the lists earlier and I have made a couple of changes for one if we are talking about an ICT for poverty reduction round table we must allow for more time for plenary discussions. So I have reduced the panellists time to 6 minutes each and more time to plenary discussions Secondly PS Rege can not act as a moderator. Rather he should officiate the opening. So have altered that as well. We also do not need to have more than one moderator for each session. I have therefore removed myself from the responsibilities of moderating the morning session. This sounds a great conference (the u-society is indeed upon us after burying the e-society). Only wish they had sent out the info early in the year when we were planning our schedules. Wainaina, Have perused some of the stuff you are working on, which look pretty interesting - and very much in line with what we are trying to do with "Poverty Reduction and ICTs". In choice of words, I am very careful not to reverse the order (ie "ICTs and Poverty Reduction", ICT4D, etc) for the fear that that may misplace the emphasis. Indeed, though conventionally "poverty reduction" is often taken to be part/aspect of "development", hence the assumption that "ICT for Development (ICT4D)" includes "ICTs for poverty reduction", I am tempted to think the term "development" is an understatement of "poverty reduction". I would rather see the latter more as "survival" than "development"; but I could be wrong! Anyhow, the "Poverty Reduction and ICTs" Roundtable meeting comes up next week Tuesday 12th April at Landmark Hotel; thanks to CATIA, TESPOK and ICT Policy Consortium - Africa for sponsorship. It shall be co-hosted by ARCC, Media Council, KICTANet, ICT Policy Centre, UoN IDS, KIPPRA, etc. There is a strong feeling from some members of the Consortium to agitate for "Poverty Reduction [and ICTs]" to be Chapter 2 (after Introduction) in the Draft ICT Policy to give this aspect the desired weight.
