Virtual launch of the Africa Communication and Information Platform (ACIP) for Health and Economic Action taking place on Tuesday 23 June 2020 from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm, Addis Ababa time (GMT+3). The platform will serve as a two-way information and communication platform between citizens and government but also other stakeholders. It will bring together for the first time, the major mobile network operators on the continent including MTN, Vodacom, Airtel, Safaricom and Orange. The platform will further provide the ECA, Africa CDC, Country's National COVID-19 Taskforces, Ministries of Health, and Ministries of Finance, Economy, and Planning, and other stakeholders with analysis of live data for decision-making, monitoring and evaluation. At its peak, the platform could reach over 350-460 million devices and people. The platform uses Artificial Intelligence to analyse a combination of online digital data, as well as mobile based information. It will also allow for just in time data, improve linkage of government and research centers with citizens, and assist in analysing the broader socio-economic situation of populations, and identification and targeting of policies. Pole sana for the passing of Dr Wangila. He was a good friend and an active leader in the ICT sector in the country, beyond NTSA. ...I remember having a discussion once with him on how technology could help reduce accidents. He made a good point both the police and the NTSA needed a change of mindset where they helped drivers obey the law rather than entrapping them for extortion. For example, why wouldn't we have smart roads that warned you when over speeding in a controlled zone and asked, gently to slow down. ...I thought that was difficult, at least from the majority of people he worked with. Mourning Dr. Fernando Wangila

Listers On behalf of KICTANet, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the late Dr. Fernando Wangila. His death is a considerable loss, not only to his family but also for Kenya’s technology industry. We recognise him as a champion of digital transformation who made great contributions to Kenya’s tech industry. He was instrumental in the implementation of the Transport Information Management System (TIMS) at the National Transport and Safety Authority where he served as Head of ICT Director. As a KICTANet lister, he was always benevolent in sharing his ideas with us through our many forums. Peace and comfort to his family! Today Facebook launches payments on WhatsApp in Brazil using Facebook Pay. "We're making sending and receiving money as easy as sharing photos."
