Hi, Before I begin let me say thank you to Dr. Ndemo and Mr. Kukubo for bringing us the marine cable in addition Safaricom for offering reliable broadband both for my home and office use. I know I have been a wet blanket on the issue as I strongly felt that the model was inverted this has not changed even though the issue is water under the bridge. Please be assured I did not fall down over the weekend and bang my head, I have just been engrossed watching old postings on Youtube about technology, business and other mundane topics. There is something about the American's love for sharing information that is mind boggling but explains why they are a super power in literally every field that they decide to excel. We on the other hand misunderstood the statement that "information is power" by thinking of keeping it in a silo locked away yet it is only when others when others know what information you have. That is why a Masaai carries his snjora (simi - small sword) visibly. Many internet startups believe in using the stealth approach to developing a product which ends up being expensive and usually comes too late to market yet out there, at least in the case of America, there are thousands of users willing to give you feedback on your product, for free. Today I have watched a video titled "the secret history of silicon valley" which gives an in-depth reveal of how Microwave Valley became Silicon Valley. After watching the video, it over one hour long, you will appreciate why Silicon Savannah and other initiatives lack the right environment to flourish unless we have a better understanding and appreciation of what we are trying to emulate in Malili, iHub, incubators and business plan competitions. If we continue in the direction we are going we shall remain followers of trends and shall never be the originators. Let us use the tools available to become better acquainted with the of the fields we are venturing into to avoid half baked results. Domain portability

Hi, We keep making noise about the issues with number portability as relates to our mobile services but yet we do not have domain portability. ISPs treat domains they have registered as their personal property, is it? Does anybody know if WananchiOnline still exists as I have been calling the ISDN number listed and all I get is a looped auto attendant response, no one responds to the mails sent and when I visited the listed offices at Loita House I was attended to in the corridor (reminds me of the old Immigration department). I am trying to transfer a domain they registered that expired almost a month ago and no one contacted the client, when I look up the domain Mr. Mucheru is still listed as the contact person, maybe he could assist with the domain transfer. What steps could be taken to support the introduction of good practice standards in the region? 1) We need Content Management Strategy and Roadmap: An organization's vision, mission, objective and long term goals should be understood before starting a Content Management initiative. The Content Management strategy must be aligned with the organization's goals along with well-defined Key Performance Indicators. When coming up with the strategy, one must understand the past and current business needs of the organization and envision the future state. This in turn helps to create the right Content Management strategy roadmap. In order to help prioritize Content Management initiatives and ensure alignment with organizational goals, the Content Management strategy must be clearly communicated to the business and executive management. One must follow a holistic approach in leveraging existing systems, applications, solutions and create a Content Management platform by consolidating and rationalizing the existing Content Management infrastructure and products without impacting the business. This helps in the standardization of Content Management platform. Once there is a strong Content Management strategy and roadmap in place, it is easier to radiate and spread the change. 2) Become disruptive to resistance to Change: Change is something which every human being will resist initially. One must have a mindset of 'change is something which is constant and will bring in opportunities'. There must be a clear plan for change adoption, first in terms of identifying the like-minded, change-avert people who can influence change in the organization. They must be instilled with confidence and convinced with a strong business case that the new system is valuable and that change should be implemented. If this is successful, this team will act as your Change Agents across the organization and will radiate the message and value proposition of the change to the entire organization. The key is to identify the right set of people who are change champions. 3) Keep the project within the budget and keep the deadlines. This is a common syndrome for many projects. It is highly common for Content Management implementations due to the lack of understanding on chosen Content Management Product features. Often times, most of the people look at the product features and assume that they are out of the box features of the product. However, when the content use cases are realized and implementation starts, it may turn out that the use cases require customizations, which would involve more development effort, thus impacting the project schedules. Hence while choosing the product; the emphasis must be placed on product configurations rather than customizations. More customizations would require more maintenance and support of lights-on projects. Because Content Management implementations involve all the business and IT units in the organization, the dependencies within the groups must be thought out carefully and included in the schedule. 4) How to overcome lack of Information Governance and Information Architecture: This is the key to any content managed site. Information Governance will help define the roles and responsibilities for content authoring, creation, review and approval - which are necessary to ensure that the right content is available on the sites. This coupled with scalable Information architecture is the back-bone of any content managed site. Information architecture which deals with Content Taxonomy, SEO, Intuitive User interfaces, User experience, Metadata, searchable attributes etc must be identified before the design of the site is laid out. Any wrong step in this process will lead to a non-user friendly and un-maintainable site. 5) How to overcome lack of thoughtful, scalable and appropriate architecture: This is another key item which is necessary in order to build a strong, scalable content managed site. A great deal of forward thinking in terms of growth of user base, based on future business growth of the organization, must be taken into consideration while sizing the hardware. Other key items which must be considered are content archival process, site availability, and disaster recovery. Meetings are held on Wednesday 14th, 15th, 16th and 20th, at All Saints Cathedral from 6PM and meetings will continue at Home (Langata) all days. Obituary announcement will be made on Thursday 15th, 19th and 20th on Nation, and subsequent days. Open data initiative - how open is it?

quick query on the governents open data: Is there any way i can get actual raw data from the government portal for me to run my own visualizer/ algorithm against? What sort of data is available? Can i get a look at that data? How open to analysis is it? How much of it is there, how fast are updates? For instance if i wanted to know the total number of students enrolled for kcse every year since 1990 to date, categorised by county, gender, nationality etc... how many Id's were issued month on month since 1990? How many hospitals have been built since 1990, expansions? How much was spent on health care vs education vs infrastructure vs education ? Or maybe if i wanted to track governements spend per province since 1990, broken down to each project, is that data available now? If not will it be available in 2020 .... Ie is it being captured in a manner that will allow us to make sense out of it, in ways we're probably not even thinking of yet? I imagine as a net/cit-izen this data would be quite useful, if digested and presented in a useful format. Dear Listers, As you are aware Kenya will be hosting the sixth United Nations Internet Governance forum from 27 - 30 September 2011 at UNON offices in Gigiri. The last forum was held in Vilnius Lithuania in September 2010 and it marked the end of the initial five year period. There was overwhelming consensus on the need to continue with the forum which brings together stakeholders involved in managing the Internet from governments, civil Society, academia and the technical community on equal footing. Kenya has been an active participant, our very own East African Internet Governance Forum and Kenya Internet Governance forum has provided a model that has been studied and replicated across the world. Developing software developer NGO partnerships in Kenya

Since my speaking trip to Kenya a year ago I've been pondering how to create a software development connections that never sleep. In short, my U.S. based NGO uses a GPL open source online groups platform called: http://groupserver.org The platform is out of New Zealand and presents far better web participation options than the Mailman platform this e-mail list runs on for example. (But it still works well on e-mail.) Anyway, we have a very small budget each year that we contribute toward new features and I am considering trying to extend that budget further with some speculative feature the development that if it works, we'd contribute the code back the open source code base or have installed on our customized platform So, how do I best make the opportunity known to the right folks in Kenya (be they technology building companies, solo programmers, tech NGOs, extremely talented students looking for some real world experience, etc.)? The technology niche challenge is that we need someone who can: 1. Download and install the latest http://groupserver.org release on a server test they control. (Not that easy apparently based on Mailserver requirements and misc. dependencies) 2. Program in Python and Zope. (The tool has some legacy stuff as more code migrates from Zope into Python "eggs" (no, I really don't know what that means) 3. Likes to experiment and can help define the software requirements based on our rough outline of features (example experimental features we want to explore include adding moderation to specific topics, allowing people to set e-mail delivery by topic, geography based private messaging circles ( http://beneighbors.org ideas), embedding more external social media content elements based on links shared, search alerts, better invite others tools for inclusive outreach, creating creative ways to access old archives from old school YahooGroups like monthly indexes to auto tag clouds to better serach, developing interesting statistics/use information that generate "what's hot" links, etc.! 4. Be inspired by our democracy/community building mission and understand that our budget is extremely limited. My thought is that the test for applying should be at least to install a working version of GroupServer and show it to us. So, where do I post/circulate this opportunity?
