IGF 2012 Remote Hubs

Listers, The Internet Society Kenya Chapter will be coordinating the local remote hubs, this is an appeal to our colleagues in Universities or any interested institutions who might be in a position to set up the hubs to pass the message to interested participants within their communities. People can watch the webcast together and send questions (via text or video) that will be answered by panelists in IGF. In addition, hub organizers can hold debates to discuss the themes introduced at the IGF from their local perspective. There are several advantages in creating a hub: - it helps to raise awareness about Internet Governance issues; - it fosters networking among participants and community building; - and it encourages follow-up activities. How to organize a hub? The requirements are very simple: - A room or auditorium. It can be held in a university classroom or any other convenient place; - A computer with a broadband Internet connection and a projector equipment, to enable the hub participants to watch the webcast ; - A hub moderator, who will plan the dynamics of the local discussions as well as transmit the hub participants’ questions or comments to the IGF through the remote participation channels; - A general call in lists, forums etc, to invite the interested local community. KeBS to re-emburse fake phone owners

Hi, We all wish the headline in tomorrows paper would be "KeBS to refund fake owners" as to the best of my knowledge they are mandated and funded by the tax payer to make sure that the items that come into the country meet certain required usage and safety standards. Evert time I import IT items I am charged a fee for KeBS certification what do they do with the money collected if millions of fake (no IMEI numbers) mobile phones, many of which where shipped in container loads, passed right under their nooses. As with most issues we have a tendency of barking up the wrong tree, suing CCK is dealing with a symptom instead of dealing with the core problem which is a standards body that does no work, its time we re-outsourced the function. Steve, Personally, I think you are right in trying to exonerate KeBS from the equation. Why? Because I don't know at what stage CCK involves KeBS during the Type-Approval process for communications equipment. There are fellows from CCK on this list I suppose. Maybe they can tell us, or perhaps they are "not allowed to speak on behalf of CCK". Dear Listers, Africa Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD) in collaboration with the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), hosted the 6th annual ccTLD event in Livingstone (Zambia) in July 2012 the theme being Enhancing Internet Management in Africa. While presiding over the opening ceremony the Minister of Transport, Works Supply and communications urged delegates to ensure that the Internet is readily accessible and manageable to the ordinary person in an African village, in addition he emphasised on the need to curb the digital divide between urban and rural areas and the high cost of Internet services in African countries. The meeting focused on enhancing the visibility of African ccTLDs through branding and marketing, examining the likely impact of new gTLDs on African ccTLDS as well enhancing the robustness and efficiency of African registries by improving technical infrastructure. KBS sticker is not a proof KEBS certification. Downtown in Nairobi you can get any sticker (KEBS, KRA etc) for a song. In my opinion the buck stops with both CCK and KEBS. CCK is mandated to type approve telcom equipments and uses KEBS as an agency to do this. On the other hand KEBS is mandated to ensure that all product sold to consumers meet certain standards. CCK can use another agency if it feels KEBS is not doing a good job. At the same time KEBS can reject any CCK type approved telco product if it is harmful to consumers. ------Original message------ From: S.M. Be on the look out!* **** **** In a city where crime takes different shapes everyday, the monster radio sought out to find out whats really happening in Nairobi. Over the past few months residents in the up market estates (Kileleshwa, Lavington, Kilimani and Westlands) have been complaining of frequent attacks from armed robbers who are riding on motorbikes. Get this right, not tuk tuk motorbikes but strong heavy CC motorbikes; what we call “Hondaa” in slang. The police and victims have identified the robbers as two or three young guys who ride on the same bike and are armed and dangerous. they mostly attack female pedestrians but now are also targeting males and motorists too. they are upmarket and are well kept so you may never have the slight idea of whom they really are. the mastermind in the clique is a skinny dark skin tall guy and the bike rider is chubby and short. the third robber is always in the shadows but is equally dangerous said a female victim whose identity we are withholding for security reasons. last night September 13th, they orchestrated six crimes from 7pm to 11pm within Adams arcade, Hurlingham, Jabavu lane which is just outside Kilimani Police station and Brookside, all of which they robbed victims at gun point and seriously hurt them as well. The robbers take all sorts of valuables i.e, cellphones, watches, rings,gadgets etc and resell them in the black market.Currently the Kilimani area and Kileleshwa police departments are on high alert with police patrols deployed all over the yaya and valley arcade areas. Through HR&A our Master Developer at Konza we met two agencies today in New York involved with the development of a futuristic New York that will be competitive in the next 50 years. Hudson Yards Development Corporation was created by Mayor Bloomberg to redevelop a section of New York that was their industrial area. It covers approximately 300 acres with mostly non high rise buildings. The city now wants high rises to meet future office demands. Here they are buying back most of the land while developing modern infrastructure including the subway. Consultants are working day and night to ensure the redeveloped area meets current and future needs. Later we visited the New York City Development Corporation charged with NY's future competitiveness. They noted that in 1890, NY wad basically a trading centre. In the 1940s, it became an Industrial City and today it is largely a financial and services city. They now want to switch gears to a more technology city. Through a competitive process, they have put together a number of universities to deliberately steer NY into another Silicon Valley. Cornell University is paired with Israel Institute of Technology to deliberately create multi disciplinary programs in applied sciences and entrepreneurship. NY University too will partner with other global centres of excellence such as Indian Institute of Technology to also focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. To help create a competitive future, the city will give free land and other incentives. They are demolishing one of the hospitals in order to create space for a futuristic project. Each of the different university grouping will focus in a specialized area that will be critical in the days to come. They are coming up with courses like health analytics, smart cities etc. This is how in future we can use data to predict our future. This is very critical and many lessons for developing countries. As we continue to do things the same way it has always been done, things remain the same and this ain't good at all. We need to leverage on what we have and do a little more. In the evening I attended a UN sponsored launch of Better than Cash Alliance at the Ford Foundation. Here speaker after speaker lauded Kenya for its contribution towards mobile money. Our own Michael Joseph was in attendance. This was a launch to scale up what has been successful in Kenya (75% of mobile money transactions world wide happens in Kenya). We shall see many researchers coming to Kenya. We must move up the ladder through research and begin to lead the rest of the world. Instead of spending many hours arguing the merits and demerits of SAP training some Kenyans we need a mobile payroll system that can be integrated with Government's Integrated Financial Management System. When Matatus were introduced, there was a regulated transport system in Kenya. Buses could not just stop anywhere. They were like the proprietary software. Mini buses could stop anywhere and charged based on distance travelled and eventually dealt a blow to buses in urban centres. The rest today is history. That is ok for now. Ndemo. Njeri Rionge had asked me to speak about the private equity and venture capital industry in Africa – which I write about on www.africa-assets.com – and the nascent ICT industry in Kenya at her Ignite ‘Scaling Your Business Upwards Summit’ last week in Nairobi. Has anybody had their services disrupted? Road design issues

Hi all, Anyone with contacts of the Roads permanent secretary, or the in charge at Kenya National Highway Authority? Would like to follow up with them on the lack of pedestrian inclusion on Mombasa Road, where more than one person is knocked down daily. There's also a blind roundabout on the Eastern bypass, near Windsor which has led to a number of accidents and deaths. That should at least have rumbles to warn user.

French government to use PostgreSQL and LibreOffice in free software adoption push The plan could see up to 10 percent of money saved on proprietary software licenses reinvested in improving free software By Peter Sayer | IDG News Service | Published 16:05, 25 September 12 French government agencies could become more active participants in free software projects, under an action plan sent by Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault in a letter to ministers, while software giants Microsoft and Oracle might lose out as the government pushes free software such as LibreOffice<http://www.computerworlduk.com/news/security/3377046/libreoffice-tackle-cri…>or PostgreSQL in some areas. Ayrault wants different branches of the French administration to use the same free software as one another when possible, so as to share experience and cut support costs. Just came across this... http://careers.n-soko.com/jobs/detail/51608434?jobId=51608434 It looks like Dr. Ndemo is shopping around for Bloggers and I wondered if I could alert my friend @RobertAlai to apply or maybe his colleague Dennis Itubi @OleItubi has better experience :-) But on a serious note, you do need a hacker to catch a hacker. Am told in the US, the FBI attends black hacker competitions and recruits chaps from there and then scrubs them into white hackers... walu.
