The inventor of the World Wide Web has said governments and companies "must not shy away" from giving the public free access to sensitive information. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who launched the web on Christmas Day 1990, argued that open data was essential in " fighting poverty, accelerating industry and innovation, and reducing corruption". NSA Tapping into Google & Yahoo Networks? How is Kenya protected?

Listers, Just came across this http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/nsa-infiltrates-links… It looks like Google might have been caught by the NSA with their pants down since hacking into their Data Transport layer simply gives up all the secrets that encryption is supposed to be protecting. Now, moving on swiftly to the local setup, I am also concerned that even as we look to start pushing for National Standards of Encryption through the PKI project, whether we as a country have come together to review and see how to protect our countries intelligence and data. We also know for a fact that the US was busy tapping into World Leaders phones, and I can bet if there are a few presidents to be 'tapped' in Africa, ours should be way up on that ladder! However, more worrying would be, how protected are our internal networks from such tapping, even from locals? Could there be a guy who has tapped into Safaricoms internal network and is busy reading every email, chat that is flying through and perhaps selling such information to our erstwhile enemies the Al-Shabbab? I was once very surprised when a personal friend got a transcript of all his calls, and chat messages, word-for-word for the previous past 6 months, dug up from one of the local Telcos. The ease with which such information was availed appalled me as it clearly means that the Telcos clearly store all our chats, and such records in clear text months after we have used them and a guy with basic SQL knowledge just needs to hack into the network (easy) and call them up. To the extent the powerless have access to it, they gain in power. To the extent that the already powerful have access to it, they further consolidate their power. As we look to reducing power imbalances, we have to look at data: data privacy for individuals, mandatory disclosure laws for corporations, and open government laws. Today’s Internet is a fortuitous accident: a combination of an initial lack of commercial interests, government benign neglect, military requirements for survivability and resilience, and computer engineers building open systems that worked simply and easily. We’re at the beginning of some critical debates about the future of the Internet: the proper role of law enforcement, the character of ubiquitous surveillance, the collection and retention of our entire life’s history, how automatic algorithms should judge us, government control over the Internet, cyberwar rules of engagement, national sovereignty on the Internet, limitations on the power of corporations over our data, the ramifications of information consumerism, and so on. Public consultation on the licensing framework for Electronic Certification Service Providers (E-ECSP)

Listers, As you are aware, the Kenya Information and Communications Act, Cap 411A, provides a legal framework for the provision of electronic commerce services in the country. In particular, the Act and the Electronic Certification and Domain Name Administration) Regulations, 2010, define the conditions that must be met for electronic communication to be recognized as authentic or as emanating from either a person or an institution. In addition, the Act provides for the establishment of a framework based on a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) model. In recognition of the foregoing, CCK has developed a licensing framework for Electronic Certification Service Providers (E-CSP) to support the PKI framework and which will subsequently lead to an amendment of the Market Structure. CCK, therefore, wishes to invite stakeholders and members of the public to submit their comments on the proposed licensing framework for Electronic Certification Service Providers. The comments submitted will be considered for incorporation in the final documents. Dear Hassan, Dr. Ndemo and all; As per your request, I want all to know, we delivered a NATIONAL strategy that is working.....find attached a short brief on how it was conceptualized and implemented! And of course some highlights on the impact. More research is needed to consolidate the true impact of the strategy. I believe these effects are sustainable! NB: The TCRA level price reduction has to do with the determinations on interconnect charges, applicable to voice products only. Otherwise, data bundles treat voice as data....interconnect charges are not applicable. I am really interested to know how others are doing it. Dear Dr. Ndemo and Walu, Having participated in driving the reduction of prices of broadband connectivity in Tanzania (core/transport Backhaul) by over 99% compared to 2009 prices; it is now time to agree on what we mean "Broadband". Further, I suggest we seriously agree on what it means to connect xxxxxx to ICTs, to help/guide all researchers in reporting about meeting the WSIS targets by 2015. Please recall...the first six targets are about connecting xxxx to ICTs. Here they are: 1.To connect villages with ICTs and establish community access points. 2.To connect universities, colleges, secondary schools and primary schools with ICTs. 3.To connect scientific and research centers with ICTs 4.To connect public libraries, cultural centers, museums, post offices and archives with ICTs. 5.To connect health centers and hospitals with ICTs. 6.To connect all local and central government departments and establish websites and email addresses. Dr. Ndemo, comming up with a harmonised definition certainly will help data collectors to give our region a fair reporting. I request your thoughts on this.
