Wayleave storm threatens clean energy projects (add ICT Projects to that list)

Dear listers This issue of Wayleaves is becoming a serious impediment to rolling out critical infrastructure in our country. Could using the Multi-Stakeholder Engagement Strategy work towards ensuring that communities and county governments become strong partners in these projects? Why are communities becoming an impediment to the very projects that may well uplift their lives? What are we missing? When Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) decided to sue some 561 Kajiado landowners last week, its executives were walking down a familiar path. Investors and government agencies working on multi-million shilling energy projects have found themselves in the eye of a wayleave storm. Residents have generally rejected compensation offers and at times resorted to civil protests that have grounded work at the sites. Redefine Issue; Net neutrality 'first world' problem?

Happy Saturday! We've got to be a demand to ourselves and our communities to be a stand for more and not just enough or just a shot! Nairobi and Kenya is touted all over as the innovation hub. This thinking if adopted by all of us will only not keep us there or at best will keep us as a testing hub in the name of an innovative hub. Secondly, using all the experiences of the so called first world, how might we catapult our growth versus just following suite? We must be able to create our own trail, not just accept a few shots to get high on. Half a loaf theorem is really killing our people. There is evidence all over- Traditional NGO speak. What does it take to have the whole loaf and icing cake too. In other words the highest potential experience from the onset. While we credit efforts by different players to meet community challenges such as nusu internet, the big brother herein Government must own the bigger vision and responsibility. For all it is worth, we are in dire need of all the exposed brains to not be satisfied with just enough even in this evolving ICTs field. Blessed day. Thank you Husein for this. You have captured the issue of the "Same sex" video very well. I think this debate goes to show the urgent need for the forum we discussed on Net Neutrality. I believe this forum is creating the necessary conversations on the issue but we now need to escalate it to a stakeholder forum and come up with a report that can inform policy change. Hi Listers, It appears that KFCB is struggling to remain relevant in an ever changing environment. Has the Board considered getting into partnerships that will advance the cause for a 'family friendly Internet'? That would include but not limited to use of filters, proactive training on the use of Internet at home. While at it, they could commission the development of a Kenyan Internet filtering tool. On homosexuality and Information Controls: Laws and Culture

Hello listers, The Internet has been a great platform for sexual minorities and those who work to defend their rights for organization, support groups and as safe haven from hostile offline environments. The video clip in question was uploaded, not sold on the streets of Nairobi, in part because the Internet is a safer platform for the LGBTQ community. My thinking on this is not even a question of legality but rather about the cultural expectations we have in our country on this topic. If tomorrow the LGBTQ community successfully lodged a constitutional case on the illegality of the clauses incriminating their very identity, the people they live with in their neighbourhoods, schools, churches and mosques would not accept them overnight. It will take time and immense effort to build a critical mass who take our brothers and sisters who are sexual minorities as human beings. As human rights defenders, out role should then be to keep the Internet as that safe haven for the LGBTQ. This will continue work done by an earlier CSTD Working Group on Enhanced Cooperation, that was active from 2013-2014. and current CSTD Chair, Peter Major of Hungary, has indicated that he will establish the new working group in a similar fashion, with 20 UN Member States and 5 representatives from each of the four identified stakeholder groups (business, civil society, intergovernmental organizations, the technical & academic community). During the 2016 grant cycle, co-financing awards totaling $272,000 will be given to applicants who propose ways to expand the space for civil society through projects that enhance the ability of citizens and nongovernmental organizations to participate more fully in civic life. “Civil society is an essential part of the democratic community,” Secretary General Maria Leissner said. “We are committed to providing moral and financial support to those who are working to reduce the risk of a democratic recession.” CD-UNITED, funded with a generous donation from the U.S. Department of State, will provide up to $80,000 in co-financing for each approved project proposal that addresses this year’s theme: /Democracy in Action: Expanding Civil Society Space/. Applicants are responsible for securing co-funding commitments from other donors before their proposal is submitted for consideration. “We welcome concrete, action-oriented initiatives that focus on protecting civil society, which is one of our top priorities,” Leissner said. “CD-UNITED has already provided valuable support to local organizations engaged in educational campaigns and efforts to promote democracy and protect human rights. We look forward to having an even bigger impact this year.” The list of eligible recipients ranges from unregistered organizations and non-profits to universities and international organizations that are working to promote human rights, freedoms and the values enshrined in the Warsaw Declaration. The proposed activities can take place anywhere in the world. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, through 31 December 2016.
