Blessed Wednesday! As who pays for the dropped time is reflected upon, there has got to be another way to keep the nation powered. Kenya Power must be commended for in the recent years, more regions of the nation have access to the grid. Solar power penetration is marginal. Back up power ends up being the famed fuel-based generators which are used by offices and manufacturers - leading to higher cost of production and higher prices and reduced business profits. Options of nuclear energy.... ICTs are highly energy and in this instance Kenya Power dependent. Overall for growth of the sector and its valued contribution to the GDP, the power must be rethought. The Energy Bill 2015, proposed by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff will make Kenya Power pay customers for any losses due to blackouts exceeding three hours, in case it fails to issue a 24-hour notice prior to such an outage. The bill was passed by parliament and will now go to the Senate then forwarded to the president for assent, if senators also pass it. The proposed law will push Kenya Power to compensate a consumer where due to power outages, poor quality, irregularity of electricity supply or negligence; the consumer incurs financial loss or suffers physical injuries. Shariff said the bill was meant to check conduct of the company given that it is a monopoly. "The whole idea is not to punish anyone, but honestly they need to pull up their socks," Shariff told the Star on Friday. "Every time there is a blackout there are financial losses. There are people running butcheries, salons and other businesses. What we are saying is that there is a financial aspect to it (power outages)." The compensation, according to the bill, shall be paid in form of a subsidy incorporated in the customer's bill. It shall be equal to the amount of loss incurred as presented by the consumer and verified by Kenya Power. The power utility firm will only be spared paying a compensation, in case a blackout is due to 'an act of God', like in the case where heavy downpour causes a power line to fall. On Thursday evening, other than parliament, most areas in Nairobi had a blackout following heavy rains that flooded most roads in the city. "Heavy rainstorms have this evening caused power interruption in most parts of Nairobi. The heavy rains that started late in the afternoon have interrupted electricity supply and distribution systems in parts of the city," said Kenya Power in a statement issued on Thursday night. Last July, Kenya Power said it would need at least five years to build adequate redundancies at our major load centres in cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, which will end outages. A redundancy system allows the company to transfer customers to a subsidiary network and keep electricity on, when there is a failure within the main network. The need for accessible, affordable, high quality internet access is actually being sneaked into the "modern digital" classification as a basic need in the "digital Mazlows Hierachy of needs" This partnership is presented as a trade-off. Hopefully this does not elicit anti-competitive issues with stakeholders, whose occurrences causes projects to shift tangent and there is still loss of public funds and lack of delivery at best. It is good that there is a pilot to allow a smaller scale assessment of the objectives they intend to achieve. It would be great if the resident associations in the said areas are engaged. In the same light, this is also where the ICT Professionals, Internet Society and stakeholders become resourceful. How is ICT Ministry and national agencies be involved or this is County business? What services might this statement mean?; "Dr Kidero said his government would also partner with Safaricom to decentralize its information communication and telecommunications service functions to seven major locations in the city...." In light of this, what opportunities would this partnerships/works "birth" for ICT players? Gamification. it's amazing how the debate around gambling has chosen to focus on monetary gains, addiction and other associative proclivities. How would one for instance compare sports gambling with pokemon? There are accounts of an individual who racked a bill of $4,954 a Japanese gymnast in Rio thanks to Pokemon Go... Catch ‘em all or go broke tryin. For me they are both innovations riding on two precincts, one a supporting infrastructure - mobile and two consumers psychographics. Much needs to be done to support and ensure the government benefits from a fiscal angle of such innovations. I welcome parliamentary committee move to seek to understand the gamification phenomenon but ask it to be careful not put duress the sports betting firms that might lead to the firms contributing to there campaign kitty's to assuage tinkering of policies to their advantage. A news article on this can be found here <http://www.radiopacis.org/?p=6167> . In Summary: Fraudsters are using websites to send people SMSs that appear to come from people they know. The websites allow someone to create an SMS with any 'sender' number. When someone receives the SMS it will appear to have come from that number. The fraudsters typically ask for money in these SMSs and the person sends money unknowingly to the fraudster. How to protect yourself: As UCC combats this latest vice the simple thing you can do to not be a victim is to always verify with the sender every time you receive a money related SMS. That way you'll know if they actually sent the SMS or not. Final Note: We receive very many cases like this where someone gets tricked into sending a large amount of money to fraudsters because they received a legitimate looking SMS, Facebook message or Email that appeared to come from someone they knew. These all could have been prevented if the victims first verified with the person whom they thought sent the message before they sent the money. We hope this was useful to you. The Team is attempting to cover all 54 countries and 58 TLDs in Africa (there are 4 gTLD's). The Team thinks that this will be of interest to the whole Internet community.
