However, I believe that when they do something good (doing well by doing good) they deserve to be applauded and encouraged so that they don't think we are just out to get them..:-) This is such a case. I have been a constant critic of the fact that NOFBI (National Optical Fibre Backbone Infrastructure) is super under utilized. This will be a great way to ensure that this is utilized. Unfortunately, the premise of this article is false, completely. Facebook is NOT trying to beam internet directly to consumers. As I have stated multiply-we are not interested in becoming an operator. That is not our business model. Express WiFi, the project for which the satellite was meant to provide back haul, depends on partnerships with local ISPs and operators, who will remain the locally licensed entities servicing consumers. Facebook only provides back haul, technology and investment in local entrepreneurs, etc. As you will note from the first partnership launched in Africa-we launched in Nigeria, with Coollink, a Nigerian ISP. It would be useful for all if, given that this group has direct access to me, people fact checked before writing articles that do a disservice to readers because they misinform. I would be absolutely delighted to provide details about Express WiFi and any other connectivity initiatives. As always, I remain happy to answer any and all questions, on or off-thread. Do note, however, that I am trying to take this week off-we are moving house and my husband and I are celebrating 14 years of marriage! Facebook does have a plan to grow its presence on the continent, especially given the sheer number of people who remain offline even though 95% of the world lives within range of a 2G signal. However, the narratives around the initiatives that Zuckerberg visited are also worrying. The fact that these initiatives have to be qualified through references to the US is worrying enough, but the questions that they bring up do need answering. Why bring up the connection if not to serve as an indictment on the current state of the startup and tech ecosystems in these countries? Mark's visits did spark off a couple of niche stories. Understandably there was a lot of buzz about the places he visited, the things he did, and the people he met. While some took this visit to be a validation of the continent's tech industry, others saw it as a quest for new markets and business by the social network, following a government ban on Free Basics in Egypt (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f469…) and an outright rejection in India (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f469…) . Facebook does have a plan to grow its presence on the continent, especially given the sheer number of people who remain offline even though 95% of the world lives within range of a 2G signal. Initiatives such as Aquila (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f469…) and OpenCellular (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f469…) may appear to be groundbreaking, but there are smaller ventures such as BRCK (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f46…) , which Zuckerberg himself visited while in Nairobi, which are likely to lose out to the social network's vastly deeper coffers. However, there are signs that the Facebook founder is keen on growing the next generation of techies, considering the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative's investment in Andela (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f46…) , and Zuckerberg's visit to Abuja (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f46…) to attend the Aso Villa Demo Day with President Buhari. However, the narratives around the initiatives that Zuckerberg visited are also worrying. BRCK was touted as 'an American-owned, Kenya-based start-up' (http://iafrikan.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b5c77b5d9fe8557cd2e26f469…) , and Andela, it was often pointed out, was founded by Nigerians but is incorporated in the US. The fact that these initiatives have to be qualified through references to the US is worrying enough, but the questions that they bring up do need answering. Why bring up the connection if not to serve as an indictment on the current state of the startup and tech ecosystems in these countries? Mark's visits did spark off a couple of niche stories. Listers, So during the weekend there was some discussion with the tech community over things such as the implications for the visit of figures like Mark Zukerberg. And how as a market we need to respond to such visits and get the correct narrative out there, and create a conducive structure that allows for the conversion of these narrative to action points. But for such things to happen the very foundation needs to have a think tank. The argument is that even if we do have the ICT Policy, honors is on us as a tech community to organize ourselves around how to consume that policy. In a way Kictanet is doing well in this regard. EU announces Net neutrality Guidelines

For those of us who need a refresh:- Net neutrality (also network neutrality, Internet neutrality, or net equality) is the principle that Internet service providers and governments should treat all data on the Internet the same, not discriminating or charging differentially by user, content, site, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or mode of communication. The term was coined by Columbia University Professor Tim Wu in 2003, as an extension of the longstanding concept of a common carrier.
