Dear Ali and all, Countries like the Netherlands, reported that they have held national consultations (workshops) to discuss these issues and develop a national position, while others like the US mentioned they have made the WCIT documents available to their constituencies. This is the bottom up approach that the ITU SG spoke about regarding the revision of the ITRs including the issue "openness and transparency beginning with public access to various documents. We have had a great tradition/practice since our Ministry was created, where we have discussed critical policies and regulations as a result of the open policy window provided by our government. For this instance, we should ideally follow the same multi stakeholder bottom consultations approach for both process and substantive issues. Kelvin Yes yes you need to be corrected:) You will be surprised that violence against women cuts across board i.e. in rural areas, in urban areas, in slums, in the leafy suburbs etc. Further, violence is not only physical but also psychological. In regard to technology, there have been many cases of women's nude pictures being posted on internet by rejected lovers (and don't ask me why women allow their lovers access to their nude pics cause i have no answers). Women talk of the trauma they go through after something like this has happened (equate this to psychological violence). Do you remember sometime back, Kaz (she is in the entertainment industry) had to appeal to people to stop forwarding or circulating hers which were posted by an ex, cause it was causing her so much anguish? Patricia Kihoro of 2010 Tusker Project Fame told us in the survey we conducted on cyber crime and women, that there was a Patricia hate page created on facebook after she voted for Ng'ang'alito instead of Debal. This scared her and she didnt know how the the public would treat her after she left the academy. She told us that she put private settings on her facebook page so that it would be impossible to trace her in the searches. This is just an example of how women are intimidated through the net. We are forced to suffer all forms of violence, because we love our men, despite their violence, and also because of the children. And sometimes we don't have a good social situation, because there is nothing for us anymore at our parents' home. Yes, you're scared of losing our home if ever we think to lodge a complaint or ask ourselves where will we live, especially when you don't work. We don't know who to turn to when we are victims of violence, because our friends give bad advice. For fear of further abuse, we are sometimes obliged to go along with the decisions of our husbands, even when they are bad. Does justice really care about these kinds of problems? Listers, Internet intermediaries can be looked at as go-betweens, they act between two parties on the Internet enabling the transmission and sharing of information. They allow communication, and provide knowledge and content of all types, from email to entertainment. However, they do not make decisions about the type of content that passes through their facilities. OECD (2010, p. 9) identifies Internet intermediaries to include ‘Internet access and service providers (ISPs), data processing and web hosting providers including domain name registrars, internet search engines and portals, internet payment systems, e-commerce intermediaries and participative networking platforms which include internet publishing and broadcasting platforms that do not themselves create or own content being published or broadcast’. >From a Kenyan perspective, it is important to consider mobile service providers as intermediaries since mobile telephony continues to set the stage for adoption of Internet access even though they are regulated under telecom laws. Intermediary liability arises where governments or private litigants can hold Internet intermediaries liable for unlawful or harmful content created by users of their services. The power and influence of Internet intermediaries, as well as their limitations in enabling communication and facilitating information flows is now attracting more attention in Internet governance discussions. Questions: 1. What are the laws that govern intermediary liability in Kenya? 2. What sort of content would be deemed a liability by intermediaries and therefore justify removal? 3. But they are also easy to misuse. For example women have been intimidated, humiliated or even stalked using these tools. Questions 1. How can we strengthen participation of women in areas of internet governance, telecommunications, and cyber crime policy regulation? 2. Do ISPs and Mobile companies have policies on online/virtual violence against women? 3. What actions can be taken to encourage service providers, companies etc to develop corporate user policies and practices in relation to user rights to freedom of expression and privacy, transparency 4. ICANN is seeking volunteers to work on advancing IDN capabilities in the DNS. The project 2.1 "Root IDN Table Process" part of the IDN Variant TLD Program, is designed to develop, in consultation with the community, the process to define: * allowed code points, * corresponding variant code points, and * related allowed states for IDN Variant TLDs. ICANN is soliciting participation from volunteers with the following areas of expertise: IDNA, DNS, Linguistics/Unicode, Policy. You can indicate your interest until 13 July 2012. The Internet Society is pleased to invite applications for the 2012 Internet Society Ambassadors to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). As part of the Internet Society's Next Generation Leaders (NGL) programme, the Ambassadorships to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) are available to Internet Society members between the ages of 20 and 40. The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a multi-stakeholder forum for policy dialogue on issues of Internet governance. It brings together government, private sector, and civil society stakeholders, including the technical and academic community, on an equal basis and through an open and inclusive process. The IGF facilitates a common understanding of how to maximize Internet opportunities and address risks and challenges that arise. *_About the 2012 Ambassadors to the Internet Governance Forum (IGF)_* In 2012, the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will focus on /Internet Governance for Sustainable Human, Economic and Social Development/. Participants will explore key topics such as Cybersecurity, Online Child Protection, Intellectual Property, Copyright, Managing Critical Internet Resources, Access & Diversity and numerous others. The Forum will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from the 6-9 November 2012. Ambassadors to the IGF may be involved in various activities at the Forum, including contributions to the IGF Ambassadors' blog, participating broadly in the IGF meeting agenda and assisting with staffing of the Internet Society booth at the venue.
