The Bill proposes a number of new measures to strengthen the copyright regime. Some of the proposals have a bearing on the protection of computer programs, circumvention of technological protection measures, broadcasts, royalties and their collection, liability and roles of ISPs, procedures for takedown measures, and so on. Inside the two years that shook Facebook and the world

Listers Reading WIRED’s indepth story of Facebook’s nightmarish two years when it was embroiled in a deep soul search of what it was reminds me of how Brands today miss out on one of the most fundamental concepts of how Brands evolve. Roger McNamee an early Facebook investor and Mentor to the CEO couldn’t have put it better:- “You can assert till you’re blue in the face that you’re a platform, but if your users take a different point of view, it doesn’t matter what you assert.” There in lies one of the biggest conundrums in #ModernMarketing. It is particularly ironic that the mother of all #SocialMedia platforms missed this basic fact of how Brands evolve in the age of Social Media. It doesn’t matter a rat’s ass how you position yourself as a Brand when you are out of touch with your core customer base and how they perceive you. It’s abit of an oxymoron because Savvy Marketers would know that to get positioning right you might want to understand your customer. :-) So the problem with Facebook and other social media platforms is this:- Are they a News Operation or are they a neutral platform that exists to give voice to anyone who wants to use the platform #FakeNews be damned. I fully agree with the sentiments here. I understand Bwana Mutua is a lister so if he's lurking somewhere let him come out and address some of these issues raised here. For me I have one thing to say to him - Soft Power is ALWAYS more effective than HARD POWER..Especially when you think you have the HARD POWER but you don't necessarily have it. Bwana Mutua needs to tone down the rhetoric and engage with stakeholders. It will make it easier for websites to be targeted with legal action for enabling sex trafficking."FOSTA will produce more prosecutions of bad actor websites, more convictions, and put more predators behind bars," Wagner said in a statement. "It will give victims a pathway to justice and provide a meaningful criminal deterrent, so that fewer businesses will ever enter the sex trade, and fewer victims will ever be sold." But the legislation has also worried internet companies and advocacy groups over what it might mean for free speech online. The bill would cut into the legal immunity that internet platforms enjoy under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields websites from legal liability for content posted by third-parties.If it became law, the sex trafficking legislation would be the first major policy blow in the growing movement among lawmakers to challenge tech giants.The main concern for groups like Engine, a trade association for internet startups, is that the bill will hamper innovation by forcing smaller web companies to devote too many resources to monitoring content for which they should not be held liable. They also worry that the measure will not do enough to actually crack down on online sex trafficking......"
