Curriculum Reform - what is the tech community's input?

Listers, Some of you may be aware that the Kenya Institute for Curriculum (KICD), has embarked on curriculum reforms for basic and teacher education. (View the curriculum development cycle here <http://www.kicd.ac.ke/images/corpcomm/currdevcycle.pdf> [PDF]). KICD is currently conducting a national needs assessment study whose findings will inform the reform process. KICD is thus calling for a submission of memoranda from the public. In response, the ED10 Consortium <http://ed10.co/about/> has created this document <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1UiiRxzudjqcKJQ82Q-hWZZlmrlGeSMe1a0ik-PJ…> to crowdsource input and we will in turn organize your views and submit them as a joint memorandum for consideration by KICD. We are also hosting a thinkathon (consultative meeting) this Sunday, 7th February 2016 at iHub from 2pm-4pm. "I'm delighted to announce Göran as the new head of ICANN," said Dr. Stephen Crocker, Chair of the ICANN Board of Directors. "His leadership experience as a technology CEO and start-up founder as well as his current experience as Director-General of the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority will be invaluable as ICANN moves towards the next chapter in its history. We conducted an extensive, global search and Göran impressed us all throughout with his shared values, operational experience and understanding of the Internet ecosystem. I'm looking forward to working with him and what I know will be his substantial contribution to ICANN and to helping ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet." Marby is a Swedish citizen, currently living in Stockholm. He and his family will be relocating to Los Angeles, California the location of one of ICANN's three global hubs. "I am very excited to be joining ICANN and joining at the start of a new era for the organization and the community," said Marby. "While I know there is much for me to learn, I am eager to work with ICANN's multistakeholder community to continue all the good work that ICANN has been doing and am very committed to implementing the community's decisions – both with respect to the IANA Stewardship Transition, but also in the myriad important areas of ICANN policy development as it fulfills its mission." Marby will succeed current President and CEO Fadi Chehadé whose term finishes on March 15, 2016. Marby will join ICANN in May 2016. Göran Marby has more than 20 years of experience in the Internet and technology sectors. CA board disbanded amid protests from members

The Communications Authority board was on Friday disbanded following Attorney General Githu Muigai's advice to withdraw an appeal challenging the High Court orders sending the team home. Listers, Allow me to post a question on the group - which is the question I had in mind to present to CS Joe Mucheru. Mine is a burning question on how to incentivize the startup eco-system, including: 1. How to make the business registration process a bit less hectic. 2. Tax breaks for some amount of time during which they operate to pick up business and traction around this. Having managed the eco-system in Mombasa for a while, I think you end up finding potential kids and other chaps having ideas, but who can not enter into some contests or can not be eligible to enroll to specific support frameworks because of their lack of a business registration certificate. Which is sad, to see such potential go all the way down the drain because of financial or other constraints. .....For taxi driver Nessim Abdel Malak, 36, he doesn’t see such apps as taking business directly away from him currently but is fearful that their murky legal status could affect competition.‘They (Uber drivers) should have to pay insurance and taxes just like us” he told Quartz. “I am totally against this idea”.Abdel Malak estimated that he has to pay around 2000 Egyptian pounds ($255) for a professional taxi driver’s license and mandatory union fees. “The Uber drivers can offer more competitive rates compared to us because they have lower overheads” he lamented.... Views from far and wide in the North. By now, perhaps the Uber Executives are riding on the "negative waves" for their free PR - it is a marketing strategy too, an entry tactic too! Moving away from the taxi hue and cry, I believe Uber is a version of a human "car track". As an app, we now can track all your movements as you hail and use the service. Thus Uber at a global level becomes a repository of human movements within cities.This opens new lines of business to trade the data with interest groups such as development planners, governments and security agencies. We have participated in stakeholders forums that the Ministry has been holding as they work towards the curriculum change .
