Listers, Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the talk to IEBC online discussion. *On July 13, 2022, the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet) paid a courtesy call to Kenya’s elections management body, the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The aim of this meeting was to discuss the role of technology in the upcoming elections and beyond, and how KICTANet can collaborate with the IEBC in line with its mandate of delivering free, fair, and credible elections. In attendance were IEBC Chairperson, Mr. Wafula Chebukati, IEBC ICT Committee Chair, Commissioner Justus Nyang’aya, IEBC Legal Affairs Chair, Commissioner Irene Masit, Commissioner Francis Wanderi, Commissioner Prof. Abdi Guliye, Commissioner Boya Molu, the Commission Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Marjan Hussein Marjan and IEBC's Director of Information Communication and Technology (ICT), Michael Ouma.* As a follow up to the meeting KICTANet held an online discussion on 14th and 15th July to bring to the fore technology related concerns from members of the mailing list. The issues were summarised and forwarded to the IEBC Secretariat. The KICTANet Secretariat is waiting for feedback on the issues raised and will advise listers on the next steps as soon as feedback is received from IEBC. The Masterplan is meant to guide the government as well as investors while planning, designing, and deploying ICT initiatives for the country over the next 10 years. The master plan highlighted 19 flagship initiatives that the country considers as critical in accelerating the digital transformation of the nation. Among the flagship programmes is the establishment of two major software industries which will employ over 100,000 software engineers to develop Software/Systems for the region as well as for the global market. To kick off this initiative, the government through the Ministry of ICT, Innovation, and Youth Affairs together with the County Government of Bomet has identified land and site for the establishment of the Software Factory. As you may be aware Bomet County, Mulot area, is known to host talented ICT experts who have been using their skills in the wrong way i.e to ‘hack’ ICT platforms in the country and region. The government has planned to tap these talents through establishment of the Software factory to provide the necessary environment for their innovation and creativity. The government plan is to establish the factory with private sector investors under public-private partnership arrangement.
