Dear Michael and all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who participated and contributed to this 10day discussion moderated by MM. Indeed it has been an amazing 10 years, one that has helped begin a transformation of our country. Thanks too for those who did not contribute :) listening is part of the job, where would all those mobile calls go if no one was prepared to listen! Michael, thank you for having been such an active member of this very vibrant community, for always responding despite some rather difficult discussions that would sometimes border on the personal. OK, in fact often got personal, but I think you have heard just how highly we all think of you. We look forward to continuing to work and interact with you. We look forward to having similar interactions with new CEO Bob Collymore, welcome Bob. The MaCkinsey Report

Listers, The above report has extensively been referenced to on several occasions, by government and industry alike - as a benchmark for BPO/ITES development in Kenya. The report was commissioned (to the best of my knowledge) by government to guide in the development of the sector. Many of the recommendations from the report are already being implemented. >From what I gather, the report indicates that a BPO/ITES cannot be profitable unless at 250 seats. What is their definition of profitability? What are the cost assumptions? What technology are they referencing? What process are they referencing? - In a nutshell, what are the variables they considered in drawing that conclusion? This report was delivered in an electronic format I believe, but there are only a handful of print copies available. Reason given, the rest of the report is not meant for public consumption! Was this not funded to the tune of USD 500K- public funds? My plea - the relevant ministry to have "the public consumable" sections posted on their site for the public to freely have access to it. Death Threat Calls

Listers, This morning, my mum received a threatening death call via a Safaricom number. She would have ignored the call, but the caller identified her by her name. It's left her worried so much because she doesn't know who the 'killer' is or what was the intention of calling. There have been a number of threatening calls and texts and I think they are increasingly becoming the order of the day, despite the government's declaration that all SIMs to be registered. Can Safaricom track who is the owner of the number as it's causing psychological distress to my mother as well as everyone in the family? Hi Listers Query: Can MJ shed light on who came up with the MPESA,MKESHO and OKOA JAHAZI applications. Or was it a Kenyan who may have innocently shared an idea without protecting it and now all he or she can do is watch from afar as others capitalize on his great ideas.Just wondring. Jane Kagiri. Listers, I first met Michael in early 2005 while researching on backward and forward linkages between Large and Small Enterprises. After several attempts to secure an appointment, Michael agreed that I meet him after hours around 5.30 pm. He seemed busy but nevertheless he accepted that I interview him. We moved to a mall waiting room with his usual impatience written all over his face. I got want I wanted and bid him goodbye. Months later I was to be PS in the Ministry and later Safaricom Board member. Here I got to know Michael better. Many a time he thought of my ideas as wacky and impossible but this was him. Never rushed at decision making. In short I concluded that he is a reflective person and uses that practice to manage a complex situation. It is almost practically impossible to wiggle around Kenyan Politicians and remain relevant in modern world. How Michael managed to stay sane and move Safaricom forward, it requires a whole book-- Reflections of Kenyan Politicians. Reflective practice in management is referred to an active process which involves examination of past experiences and gaining some conclusions that can inform future activities. In my most desperate moment Michael applied this theory to change how things are in Kenya now. As we planned for Teams Cable, Michael hired the services of one prominent caucasian lawyer. In one of the meeting, the Lawyer said that this cable can never be built and only if Safaricom pays for it. He insintuated that we (Kenyans) were not cabable of doing such a huge project. I felt for once to do something I had never done in my life, to punch the guy and knock out his teeth and then resign the following hour but I decided to take a deep breath and said perhaps this would be the end of the project. I called the meeting off and decided to write a strong letter to Michael protesting the unwarranted attack by the lawyer. Michael appologised and later brought the issue of Teams to the Board. Although he too may have not believed that Teams would succeed, he surely reflected on the impact of the investment and decided to invest. On another significant project, Malili now Konza Technology City I asked Michael to put up a Safaricom Towers. He quickly said never. How do you buy just a plain piece of land out of nowhereI dont know how you think. Later he had different views on Malili ..he may have reflected once again. >From my interview to Teams and Malili, it is evident Michael indeed reflects on what he does and possibly we should all emulate that. In the field of reflective practice in Management, one only needs to ask him/herselve the following four simple questions: What should have happened? What actually happened? What were the differences? What did we learn? I am looking forward to a book from Michael. On my part, I shall at least have a chapter. As a student of Management, I urge Michael to take up a start up and apply the same principals he did on Safaricom. This is what will create new theories of Management. We shall miss you from the Safaricom pinacle and hopefully not from our sector. Ability to work in English, including the ability to write accurately, concisely and quickly, as this is the working language of the GAC. Knowledge of a wider range of working languages would be an asset; 6. Excellent communication and presentation skills; 7. Ability to work independently and to co-operate with others in a diverse international setting; 8. Proven ability to manage and stimulate effectively the work of other professionals in a small team, and experience with contracting and managing additional service providers, for instance for specific analytic work, up and beyond working with the core staff; 9. Demonstrated interest and sense of international public service. *What do we offer* A challenging opportunity to help shape professional support to the GAC in times of change in the landscape of Internet governance. The Chief Executive Secretary (CES) will not stand alone in her/his work. Initially, two more positions are to be filled in to work under responsibility of the CES. The Secretariat will be hosted by TNO in her offices in Delft, the Netherlands, about a half hour travel from Amsterdam Schiphol airport. TNO is the largest independent, not for profit, applied research organization in the Netherlands with 4.500 employees and 30 knowledge centers. The hosting facilities include housing, HR, IT and financial administrative support. Hi Listers, What i admire most about MJ is how he has always led from the front in Safaricoms CSR projects,talk of Lewa Marathon,Dettol Heart Run etc..... he has always literally ran the full distance.
