When content becomes harmful....hard questions?

A very tragic day in India and while the situation unfolds, there are some concerns that content can have its problems. One of the biggest sites that have been busy is a service called Tweeter which allows members to share information. The members are doing so publicy and seems placing the recovery ops at risk. Anyway, I thought I'd share my thoughts.

The initiative was started in 2003 in the framework of the United Nations' World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and sees bridging the Digital Divide and the Content Gap as its overall goal. As of today WSA involves representatives from 168 countries all over the world. Focusing on cultural identity and diversity, the WSA looks for multimedia projects that effectively and creatively work with quality contents and digitalize educational, scientific and cultural heritage. Every two years the World Summit Award (WSA) organizes an international competition of creative multimedia content/products from all country experts according to 8 categories, these categories are: - e-Government & Institutions - e-Health & Environment - e-Learning & Education - e-Entertainment & Games - e-Culture & Heritage - e-Science & Technology - e-Business & Commerce - e-Inclusion & Participation The WSA contest is open to any university, institution, organization, individual, company that has created / creates multimedia content in either online format or offline on CD-ROM that would fit any of the above categories. *Please Note the following:* - There is no limitation regarding the platform of the applications - All products must be complete products and may not be drafts, demonstrations or unfinished prototypes. - The release year of the product must be 2007 or 2008 - The producer of the product must have all the copyright permissions for pictures, sound, content etc - English must be used as the language for the producer and product information - All products may be submitted only once - Products can be submitted either in soft copy via the address below, or physically delivered at the KeLC offices, EMS Building, Kenya Institute of Education, Muranga Road, NAIROBI *The deadline for all products to reach the Kenya e-Learning Center is 15 January 2009*. It is however advisable to submit the products well in advance. Once the products are received they will be pre-evaluated before forwarding to the WSA Headquarters in Austria, where an international grand jury will examine and select the best products in April 2009. BungeSMS has today run on K24 TV with an appeal for Kenyans to give their views on MPs taxation. It's unanimous!! 100% of Kenyans polled demanded that MPs must pay taxes or face the axe in 2012. Congratulatory messages have also been sent in recognition of the MPs who opted to be taxed especially Hon. Muthama. The results have been sampled on K24's Big Story and will be availed on http://www.bungesms.com . K24 TV has been proactive in supporting citizen-centric approach to news reporting. Dear Colleagues, The Internet Society has announced that it is seeking applications for the next round of the ISOC Fellowship to the IETF program. The program offers engineers from developing countries fellowships that fund the cost of attending an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting. As you know, the IETF is the Internet's premier standards-making body, responsible for the development of protocols used in IP-based networks. IETF participants represent an international community of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers involved in the technical operation of the Internet and the continuing evolution of Internet architecture. Fellowships will be awarded through a competitive application process. The Internet Society is currently accepting fellowship applications for the next two IETF meetings: * IETF 74 being held in San Francisco , USA , 22 - 27 March 2009 * IETF 75 being held in Stockholm , Sweden , 26 -31 July 2009 Up to five fellowships will be awarded for each IETF meeting. Local Content & Piracy

Good Morning All. There has been major debating on what local content it & is not. When content is delivered the providers/developers of the content have financial gains they are anticipating for all there efforts. What am I getting at? There has been major piracy violations of applications when you look at the African market. How can we as a community help reduce this? 1) Being more respectful of copyrights. Pay for what you use. 2) Ensuring that we self police when it comes to content. Am sure there are other ways that can be used but let begin with those & grow from there. Many developers I have meet have serious issues when it comes to collecting payments for software they just developed. This is not just wrong. Its illegal to use software you haven't paid for. The problem doesn't end there it goes on to other softwares where techies are asked to look for software cracks. Corporations like Microsoft, Intuit to name afew have been violated locally. Ask yourself if we are doing this to others then why wouldn't they do it to us? Due to piracy companies are spending more developing security feature to prevent piracy then to enhance the application. What should we do as users of software to reduce this. 1)As business people what are we going to do for ourselves to prevent this? 2) What measures are law makers going to do to assist in this? 3)Whislte blowers are needed to report those who violate. 4)Online List of shame Stephen Mwangi

As efforts are made to bridge the digital divide, many suggestions are raised about how to reach the next billion. With the pending exhaustion of IPv4 addresses, is IPv6 the tool to help us reach the unconnected? IGF in collaboration with DiploFoundation, IGCBP'08, research phase is undertaking a research on IPv6 policy. Taking a few minutes from your very busy schedule to answer the attached questionnaire,will be highly appreciated.
