Dear Listers, Happy new year! On 17th December 2020 the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) conducted a webinar to expound on the new Digital Taxes which I got a chance to attend. I have written a recap on the webinar that hopefully will help you in understanding the Kenyan digital tax regulations. These are the VAT Digital Marketplace Supply Regulations and the Income Tax (Digital Service Tax) Regulations. I have tried giving different scenarios in which the Taxes may apply. Listers, 2020, taught us to embrace new things. Many of us learnt how to Zoom, Meet, Hangout among other things. A lot of data from the Communication Authority spiced our thoughts that indeed, at last technology is sipping into our far flung villages. Come 2021, we are back to default settings for our learners, forget the laptop project in this case. What we are witnessing was captured in KiCTanet study that was conducted in collaboration with the ICT Authority on the adoption and maturity levels of ICTs within counties. The Bill states that Kenyans with mobile phones or other communication devices will be required to provide emails, WhatsApp messages, SMS or any other data which the government deems a threat to national security.
