Good Day All, @bantigito has been at the forefront of "*digitalisation*", but are we spectating at a problem that will prevail in the very near future and seems to have no cure nor enthusiasm to understand and solve it? @bantigito I believe this issue/space has much more severe consequences than #Blockchains. Just like problems in computer and network security problems have been carried over to everything, nowadays getting a TCP/IP stack in a device is very cheap and everything is just a computer, the problem of *unaudited algorithms* and* systems* making and affecting decisions is going to cut across every sector, agency and corporation. I wonder how many such systems are currently being used and are soon to come (Ministry of Lands - Ardhisasa, Automated Road fines by NTSA etc.). Regulating hate speech and incitement to violence during elections in Kenya

Abdulmalik Sugow and Dr. Isaac Rutenberg of Strathmore's CIPIT have penned a very insightful piece on regulating hate speech and incitement to violence. They go ahead to explain the legislation in place, and the role of social media platforms to self regulate, develop and enforce guidelines, and the challenges of letting foreign entities enforce hate speech, and platforms' free speech rights in the jurisdiction in which they are established, combined with algorithms bias, because the platforms' algorithms are rarely optimized for local context or “foreign” speech nuances and customs. An example is Kenya with over 42 languages, these platforms are at pains to self-regulate local languages leaving hate speech at the mercy of locals to report, flag, or downrank inappropriate content. Then there is the problem of balancing free expression with the fundamental freedoms of the citizens. Where do you draw the line? Some of the recommendations are for social media platforms to collaborate with government agencies like NC4, NCIC, and IEBC, and civil society to building the capacity of social media platforms’ content moderation tools used in Kenya and fostering transparency in the conduct of these platforms to enable oversight. Civil society would also serve to hold both government and platforms accountable for their conduct. Political actors should also collaborate with civil society to engage the citizenry in civic education. The main objective of the meeting is to identify common cybersecurity priorities in a Post-COVID-19 world. Greetings Listers, KICTANet is pleased to invite you to a webinar on “Cybersecurity in Kenya " Priorities for a Post COVID-19 World, whose theme is “Building Back Better”. "The meeting will take place *Tomorrow* Thursday, November 25, 2021, from 1000 - 1200 on Zoom. The main objective of the meeting is to identify common cybersecurity priorities in a Post-COVID-19 world. The meeting will review the cybersecurity priorities identified in the KICTANet Policy Brief, <https://www.kictanet.or.ke/?mdocs-file=41288> which identifies six priority areas: to prioritize cybersecurity, prepare in advance, develop appropriate policies and practices, build partnerships, implement relevant programs, focus on people, and marshal the necessary political will to make cybersecurity in the country a reality. The second objective is to consolidate stakeholder priorities to inform the country’s cybersecurity strategies. The expected outcome is an updated and shared understanding of Kenya’s cybersecurity priorities for the coming years. Good day Barrack, These stats are not adequate. Does Kenic have bulk downloadable zones host files like ICANN with it's Centralised Zone Data Service - *https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/czds-2014-03-03-en <https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/czds-2014-03-03-en>* . I understand it's quite controversial for such data to be given out as data mining and then spamming can occur. As a middle ground can Kenic share out monthly updated lists of registered domains as they do with deleted domains - *https://kenic.or.ke/category/deleted-domains/ <https://kenic.or.ke/category/deleted-domains/> *? I see numerous and interesting insights that can be gleaned. E.g how many and which domains are hosted in the country? Their latency/response time. Uptime for the sites. Why are lots of .go.ke websites not https://?

Hi Listers, I visit lots of Kenya government websites and I notice that a good number are http:// (not secure) rather than https:// (secure). Especially sites where people are putting in their data for job applications and things like that (I had started tracking, but abandoned that project). This morning I'm getting lots of messages asking me if the Kazi Mtaani portal http://kms.go.ke being launched this afternoon is legit. Young Kenyans who want to apply are worried that it could be a malicious site since it is not https://. I'm explaining that yes, it is a legitimate government website (it has been shared by various government officials) but that it didn't attend to digital security, just like many other government agency sites. Should we be having government websites collecting people's details using http:// and not https:// in 2021? How is the security protocol not baked in during the building of the sites? - I wonder about this a lot.
